Love idioms are fixed English phrases about liking, falling in love and marrying whose meaning is figurative — 'tie the knot' means to get married, and no rope is involved. Learn them as whole phrases, because translating them word by word from Bangla almost never produces the right English.
Love idiom হলো ভালো লাগা, প্রেমে পড়া আর বিয়ে নিয়ে ইংরেজির নির্দিষ্ট কিছু বাক্যাংশ, যেগুলোর অর্থ রূপক — “tie the knot” মানে বিয়ে করা, গিঁট বাঁধার সাথে এর সম্পর্ক নেই। পুরো বাক্যাংশ ধরে শিখুন, কারণ বাংলা থেকে শব্দ ধরে অনুবাদ করলে প্রায় কখনোই সঠিক ইংরেজি হয় না।

A love idiom is a set expression about affection or a relationship whose meaning cannot be worked out from the individual words. 'Head over heels', for example, means deeply in love — it says nothing about your head or your heels.
Love idiom হলো ভালোবাসা বা সম্পর্ক নিয়ে একটি নির্দিষ্ট বাক্যাংশ, যার অর্থ আলাদা শব্দ থেকে বের করা যায় না। যেমন “head over heels” মানে গভীরভাবে প্রেমে পড়া — মাথা বা গোড়ালির সাথে এর কোনো সম্পর্ক নেই।

ভালোবাসা নিয়ে দরকারি idiom গুলো বাংলা অর্থসহ: “fall in love with somebody” = কারও প্রেমে পড়া; “love at first sight” = প্রথম দেখাতেই ভালো লেগে যাওয়া; “have a crush on somebody” = কাউকে মনে মনে ভালো লাগা, সাধারণত অল্প বয়সের হালকা টান; “head over heels (in love)” = একেবারে ডুবে যাওয়া প্রেম; “a match made in heaven” = একেবারে মানানসই জুটি; “pop the question” = বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেওয়া; “tie the knot” = বিয়ে করা; “on the rocks” = সম্পর্ক ভেঙে পড়ার মুখে। এবার তিনটি জিনিস খেয়াল রাখুন। এক, preposition বদলানো যায় না — সবসময় “fall in love with somebody”, কখনো “fall in love to”; এবং “have a crush on somebody”, কখনো “crush for”। দুই, ইংরেজিতে propose শব্দটির অর্থ বাংলাদেশে যা বোঝানো হয় তার চেয়ে সরু: “He proposed to her” মানে সে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দিয়েছে, শুধু ভালোবাসার কথা জানানো নয়; কাউকে ভালো লাগার কথা জানানো বোঝাতে বলুন “I told her I liked her” বা “I asked her out”। তিন, এই idiom গুলো ঘরোয়া ভাষার — বন্ধুদের সাথে কথায়, গল্পে বা IELTS speaking-এ চমৎকার মানায়, কিন্তু আনুষ্ঠানিক চিঠি বা রিপোর্টে এড়িয়ে যান।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
He proposed me last Friday.
He proposed to me last Friday.
Two things go wrong at once. 'Propose' needs 'to' before the person, and in English it means asking someone to marry you. If you mean he told you he liked you, say 'He told me he liked me' or 'He asked me out'.
She fell in love to her classmate.
She fell in love with her classmate.
Bangla তার প্রেমে পড়া has no separate preposition, so learners guess. The English phrase is fixed as 'fall in love with somebody'.
I am in love with him since 2023.
I have been in love with him since 2023.
Bangla uses the present tense for something that started earlier and still continues (২০২৩ সাল থেকে ভালোবাসি). English marks that with the present perfect after 'since' or 'for'.
He is head over heel in love with her.
He is head over heels in love with her.
The fixed idiom keeps 'heels' plural — 'head over heels'. The full form is usually 'head over heels in love with somebody', though 'head over heels for somebody' is common too.

- 'Have a crush on somebody' is light and one-sided; 'be in love with somebody' is serious. Do not swap them. — “Have a crush on somebody” হালকা ও একতরফা টান; “be in love with somebody” গভীর ব্যাপার। দুটো একে অন্যের জায়গায় বসাবেন না।

- 'Tie the knot' and 'pop the question' are informal and cheerful — fine in speaking and in a friendly message, but write 'get married' and 'propose' in a formal letter. — “Tie the knot” ও “pop the question” ঘরোয়া ও হাসিখুশি ভঙ্গির — কথায় বা বন্ধুকে লেখা বার্তায় ঠিক আছে, তবে আনুষ্ঠানিক চিঠিতে লিখুন “get married” ও “propose”।
- 'On the rocks' describes a relationship in serious trouble, so use it carefully about real people — it is not a light joke. — “On the rocks” মানে সম্পর্ক ভাঙার মুখে, তাই বাস্তব মানুষ সম্পর্কে সাবধানে বলুন — এটি হালকা রসিকতা নয়।
