English Idioms about Honesty and Lying

“He told a lie with me.” Bangla says আমার সাথে মিথ্যা বলেছে, and সাথে walks straight into English as “with”. English wants “to”: he lied to me, or he told me a lie. The same sentence also hides the say/tell problem — বলা covers both, so “He said me the truth” appears — and English is strict: you tell someone something, but you say something to someone. Two small words, and they run through every sentence about truth you will ever write.

“He told a lie with me.” — বাংলা বলে “আমার সাথে মিথ্যা বলেছে”, আর ওই “সাথে” সোজা হেঁটে ইংরেজিতে “with” হয়ে ঢোকে। ইংরেজি চায় “to”: he lied to me, নয়তো he told me a lie। একই বাক্যে say/tell সমস্যাটাও লুকিয়ে আছে — বাংলার “বলা” দুটোকেই ঢাকে, তাই বেরিয়ে আসে “He said me the truth” — আর ইংরেজি এখানে কড়া: কাউকে কিছু tell করা যায়, কিন্তু কিছু say করা হয় কারও উদ্দেশে। দুটো ছোট শব্দ, আর সত্য নিয়ে আপনি যত বাক্য লিখবেন সবগুলোর ভেতর দিয়েই এরা বয়ে যায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

• ❌ He told a lie with me.

  ✅ He lied to me. / He told me a lie.

  Bangla says আমার সাথে মিথ্যা বলেছে, and সাথে becomes 'with'. English uses 'lie to somebody', or 'tell somebody a lie' with no preposition at all.

• ❌ Don't tell lie.

  ✅ Don't tell lies. / Don't tell a lie.

  Bangla has no articles, so the singular countable noun is left bare. 'Lie' is countable in English, so it needs 'a' or the plural.

• ❌ He said me the truth.

  ✅ He told me the truth.

  'Tell' takes the listener straight after it (tell me, tell him). 'Say' cannot: you must add 'to' — 'He said it to me.' Bangla uses one verb, বলা, for both.

• ❌ Take it with pinch of salt.

  ✅ Take it with a pinch of salt.

  The article 'a' is part of the fixed phrase. Bangla has no articles at all, so 'a' and 'the' are easy to drop inside an English idiom — and the idiom then sounds broken.

• 💡'A white lie' is a small kind one, told to avoid hurting somebody. Do not use it for a lie that cheats a person — that is just 'a lie'. — “A white lie” হলো কাউকে কষ্ট না দিতে বলা ছোট, নিরীহ মিথ্যা। ঠকানোর জন্য বলা মিথ্যাকে এটা বলবেন না — সেটা শুধুই “a lie”।
• 💡British English says 'take it with a pinch of salt'; American English says 'a grain of salt'. Both are correct — keep to one. — ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে বলে “take it with a pinch of salt”, আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে “a grain of salt”। দুটোই সঠিক — যেকোনো একটিতে থাকুন।
• 💡'Come clean' needs 'about' before the topic: 'He came clean about the missing money.' — “Come clean”-এর পর বিষয় বসাতে হলে “about” লাগে: “He came clean about the missing money.”
