Introductionভূমিকা

Try the test in the other direction. Translate মাথা খারাপ into English as “head bad” and it collapses; চোখের বালি becomes “sand in the eye” and means nothing at all. Your own language is full of phrases that die on the way across, and English is exactly the same — that is what an idiom is. So “break the ice” has nothing to do with ice, and no amount of vocabulary will get you there. You learn the whole phrase, or you do not learn it.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

An idiom is a fixed group of words whose meaning cannot be worked out from the words themselves, and which cannot be reworded. “A piece of cake” means easy; “a slice of cake” means nothing. That rigidity is the whole difficulty and also the whole method: memorise the exact form, and you have the idiom for life.

Idiom হলো নির্দিষ্ট কয়েকটা শব্দের একটা বাঁধা দল, যার অর্থ শব্দগুলো থেকে বের করা যায় না, আর যার শব্দ বদলানোও যায় না। “A piece of cake” মানে খুব সহজ; “a slice of cake” মানে কিছুই না। এই অনড় ভাবটাই পুরো সমস্যা, আবার এটাই পুরো পদ্ধতি: হুবহু রূপটা মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন, idiom-টা সারা জীবনের জন্য আপনার।

প্রথমে দরকারি কয়েকটা idiom অর্থসহ দেখে নিন: “break the ice” = জড়তা কাটিয়ে কথা শুরু করা; “a piece of cake” = খুব সহজ কাজ (বাংলায় আমরা যাকে বলি “ডাল-ভাত ব্যাপার”); “under the weather” = শরীরটা একটু খারাপ; “once in a blue moon” = কালেভদ্রে, খুব কম; “cost an arm and a leg” = অত্যন্ত দামি; “hit the sack” = ঘুমাতে যাওয়া; “spill the beans” = গোপন কথা ফাঁস করা; “on the same page” = একই বোঝাপড়ায় থাকা; “call it a day” = আজকের মতো কাজ শেষ করা; “get cold feet” = শেষ মুহূর্তে ভয় পেয়ে পিছিয়ে যাওয়া। এবার তিনটে নিয়ম, যেগুলো না জানলে idiom শেখা কাজে আসে না। এক, রূপ বদলানো যায় না — “a piece of cakes” নয়, “under the weathers” নয়, “once in the blue moon” নয়। ভেতরের a, the আর preposition গুলো idiom-এর অংশ, ব্যাকরণের সিদ্ধান্ত নয়। দুই, কর্তা বদলালে শুধু সর্বনামটা বদলায়, বাকিটা নয়: “He got cold feet”, “She let the cat out of the bag”, “They called it a day”। তিন, tense বদলায় মূল verb-এ: break → broke the ice, spill → spilled the beans, hit → hit the sack। আর সবচেয়ে বড় কথাটা ভঙ্গি নিয়ে, কারণ এখানেই বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীরা সবচেয়ে বেশি নম্বর হারান। পরীক্ষার খাতায় “Idioms and Phrases” একটা মুখস্থের অংশ, তাই অনেকেই ধরে নেন idiom যত বেশি বসানো যায় লেখা তত ভালো। উল্টোটাই সত্যি। বেশির ভাগ idiom কথ্য ভাষার — “a piece of cake”, “hit the sack”, “a rip-off” — আর IELTS Writing Task 2, চাকরির দরখাস্ত বা অফিসের ইমেইলে এগুলো বসালে লেখাটা হালকা শোনায়, পরিণত নয়। আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখায় নিরাপদ কয়েকটা আছে: “in the long run”, “in a nutshell”, “play a key role”, “bear in mind”। বাকিগুলো রাখুন কথাবার্তা, IELTS Speaking আর বন্ধুদের সাথে চ্যাটের জন্য। আর একবারে দশ-পনেরোটার বেশি শিখতে যাবেন না; যে দশটা আপনি সত্যিই ব্যবহার করেন, সেগুলোই আপনার — বাকি পঞ্চাশটা কেবল খাতায় লেখা থাকে।
