Family idioms are fixed English phrases about parents, children and relatives whose meaning you cannot get from the separate words — 'it runs in the family' means a quality is passed down, and no running happens. The eight on this page are the ones you will meet most often in conversation, in stories and in reading passages.

A family idiom is a set expression that uses family relationships as a picture for something else — likeness, loyalty, or the odd one out. 'A chip off the old block', for example, means a child who is very like a parent, usually the father.
Family idiom হলো এমন একটি নির্দিষ্ট বাক্যাংশ যেখানে পারিবারিক সম্পর্ককে ছবি হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে অন্য কিছু বোঝানো হয় — মিল, টান, বা আলাদা হয়ে যাওয়া কেউ। যেমন “a chip off the old block” মানে বাবার (বা মায়ের) মতোই হয়েছে এমন সন্তান।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
He is my cousin brother.
He is my cousin.
Bangla names the exact relation and the gender (চাচাতো ভাই), so learners add 'brother'. English 'cousin' already covers a male or female cousin. 'Cousin brother' is understood in Bangladesh but sounds wrong to a foreign listener or examiner; say 'my cousin', or 'my cousin, Rahim' if you need to show it is a man.
My elder brother is elder to me.
My elder brother is older than me.
Bangla says আমার চেয়ে বড়, and 'চেয়ে' is translated as 'to'. English comparison needs 'than'. Also, 'elder' can sit before a noun (my elder brother) but not in a comparison — there you must use 'older than'.
Diabetes runs in our family blood.
Diabetes runs in our family.
The fixed phrase ends at 'family'. Adding 'blood' feels natural because Bangla says বংশের রক্তে, but the extra word breaks the English idiom.
He is the black sheep in the family.
He is the black sheep of the family.
The idiom takes 'of', not 'in'. Prepositions inside an idiom are fixed, so learn the preposition together with the phrase.

Is 'cousin brother' correct English?
It is common and perfectly clear inside Bangladesh and the wider subcontinent, but it is not used in British or American English, so an examiner or a foreign colleague may find it odd. The safe form everywhere is 'my cousin'.
Can 'run in the family' be used about an illness?
Yes. 'Asthma runs in the family' and 'a good singing voice runs in the family' are both natural. The idiom simply says the thing is shared by several family members over generations.
What is the difference between 'a chip off the old block' and 'the spitting image'?
'A chip off the old block' is mainly about character and behaviour, and traditionally points to the father. 'The spitting image of somebody' is about looking almost exactly like that person.
