“My elder brother is elder to me.” The sentence is built on বড় ভাই আমার চেয়ে বড়, and Bangla's চেয়ে turns into “to” on the way across. English uses “older than me” — elder can sit in front of a noun (my elder brother) but never takes “to”. Family is where these small structural habits show up most, because family is the first subject anyone is asked to talk about in an English exam or an interview.

Family idioms say three things: that a quality is inherited (run in the family, a chip off the old block, like father like son), that someone stands out from the rest (the black sheep) or that family loyalty outweighs everything else (blood is thicker than water, your own flesh and blood).

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

He is my cousin brother.
He is my cousin.
Bangla names the exact relation and the gender (চাচাতো ভাই), so learners add 'brother'. English 'cousin' already covers a male or female cousin. 'Cousin brother' is understood in Bangladesh but sounds wrong to a foreign listener or examiner; say 'my cousin', or 'my cousin, Rahim' if you need to show it is a man.
My elder brother is elder to me.
My elder brother is older than me.
Bangla says আমার চেয়ে বড়, and 'চেয়ে' is translated as 'to'. English comparison needs 'than'. Also, 'elder' can sit before a noun (my elder brother) but not in a comparison — there you must use 'older than'.
Diabetes runs in our family blood.
Diabetes runs in our family.
The fixed phrase ends at 'family'. Adding 'blood' feels natural because Bangla says বংশের রক্তে, but the extra word breaks the English idiom.
He is the black sheep in the family.
He is the black sheep of the family.
The idiom takes 'of', not 'in'. Prepositions inside an idiom are fixed, so learn the preposition together with the phrase.

Is 'cousin brother' correct English?

It is common and perfectly clear inside Bangladesh and the wider subcontinent, but it is not used in British or American English, so an examiner or a foreign colleague may find it odd. The safe form everywhere is 'my cousin'.

Can 'run in the family' be used about an illness?

Yes. 'Asthma runs in the family' and 'a good singing voice runs in the family' are both natural. The idiom simply says the thing is shared by several family members over generations.

What is the difference between 'a chip off the old block' and 'the spitting image'?

'A chip off the old block' is mainly about character and behaviour, and traditionally points to the father. 'The spitting image of somebody' is about looking almost exactly like that person.
