Bangla has one verb here, বলা, and it takes the listener quite happily — আমাকে বলল. English split the job into two verbs and gave only one of them the right to hold a person. That is the entire difficulty, and it explains why “He said me” survives for a decade in otherwise good English: the rule is never stated in a single line. Here it is. You tell a person. You say a thing.

Tell takes a person immediately after it — tell me, tell him, tell your teacher. Say does not; it goes straight to the words, and if you must name the listener you have to put to in between — say to me.

Tell-এর ঠিক পরেই মানুষ বসে — tell me, tell him, tell your teacher। Say-এর পরে মানুষ বসে না; সে সরাসরি কথাটায় চলে যায়, আর শ্রোতার নাম বলতেই হলে মাঝখানে to বসাতে হয় — say to me।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

He said me that the office is closed.
He told me that the office is closed.
A person comes straight after 'tell', never straight after 'say'.
She told that she is busy.
She said that she is busy. / She told me that she is busy.
'Tell' needs to know who was told. Either name the person, or switch to 'say'.
Say me your name.
Tell me your name.
Same rule again — 'me' is a person, so the verb must be 'tell'.
He told a joke to me and then said me sorry.
He told me a joke and then said sorry.
'Tell a joke' and 'say sorry' are fixed phrases. Learn them as whole units rather than deriving them.

Can I ever use 'say' with a person?

Yes, with 'to': 'She said to me…'. It is correct but formal and less common in speech, where 'told me' is far more natural.

What about 'speak' and 'talk'?

Those two are about the act of speaking, not the words: 'speak to someone', 'talk about something'. 'Say' and 'tell' are about the content.

Is 'tell' always about words?

No — 'tell the difference' and 'tell the time' mean recognise and read, not speak. They are among the fixed phrases worth memorising.

Which is right in reported speech?

Both work: 'He said he was tired' or 'He told me he was tired'. The choice depends only on whether you name the listener.
