Introductionভূমিকা

“Why you did not come yesterday?” Everyone in the room understood the question, and everyone also heard that it was not English. The words are right; a small verb is standing in the wrong place. Bangla asks a question by adding কি and leaving the sentence otherwise untouched — তুমি চা খাও? — so nothing in your first language prepares you for a language that reaches for a helper verb, drags it to the front, and rebuilds the sentence around it.

“Why you did not come yesterday?”

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

An auxiliary verb is a helper that stands in front of the main verb to build a tense, a question, a negative or the passive. The three primary ones are be (am, is, are, was, were), do (do, does, did) and have (have, has, had). The auxiliary carries the grammar — the person, the tense, the negative — and the main verb is left free to carry the meaning.

Auxiliary verb হলো সেই সহায়ক verb যা মূল verb-এর আগে বসে tense, প্রশ্ন, না-বোধক বা passive তৈরি করে। প্রধান তিনটি হলো be (am, is, are, was, were), do (do, does, did) ও have (have, has, had)। ব্যাকরণের ভারটা auxiliary বয়ে নেয় — পুরুষ, কাল, নেতিবাচকতা — আর মূল verb শুধু অর্থটুকু বহন করে।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

তিনটি প্রধান সহায়ক verb, তিনটি আলাদা কাজ। **be** (am, is, are, was, were) দিয়ে হয় continuous tense আর passive — 'She is reading', 'The letter was written'। be-এর পরে হয় verb + ing বসবে (continuous), নয়তো past participle (passive)। **do** (do, does, did) দিয়ে simple tense-এ প্রশ্ন ও না-বোধক হয়, আর জোর দিতেও বসে — 'Do you like tea?', 'He does not know', 'I do like it'। **have** (have, has, had) দিয়ে হয় perfect tense — 'I have finished', 'She has gone'; have-এর পরে past participle বসে, past simple নয় (has gone, has went নয়)। এখন সবচেয়ে দরকারি কথাটা, যেটা মনে রাখলে অর্ধেক ভুল এমনিতেই বন্ধ হয়ে যায়: **auxiliary যখন মাঠে নামে, মূল verb সব দায়িত্ব ছেড়ে দিয়ে মূল রূপে ফিরে যায়।** 'He likes tea' — এখানে -s আছে। প্রশ্ন করলে -s চলে যায় does-এর ঘরে: 'Does he **like** tea?' — 'Does he likes' নয়। না-বোধকেও একই: 'He does not **like** tea'। Past-এ did এসে গোটা কালটা নিজের কাঁধে নেয়, তাই মূল verb আর past রূপে থাকে না — 'Did you **go**?', 'He did not **come**' — 'Did you went' এখানে সবচেয়ে চেনা ভুল, আর এটা খাতায় সরাসরি নম্বর কাটে। বাংলাভাষী হিসেবে আমাদের দুটো নির্দিষ্ট ভুল হয়, আর দুটোরই কারণ এক। এক, প্রশ্নে auxiliary বাদ পড়ে যায় বা সামনে আসে না — 'You like tea?', 'Why you did not come?'। বাংলায় প্রশ্নে শব্দের ক্রম বদলায় না বলেই এটা এত স্বাভাবিক লাগে; ইংরেজিতে wh-শব্দের ঠিক পরেই auxiliary বসতে হবে — 'Why **did** you not come?'। দুই, না-বোধকে আমরা 'না'-কে verb-এর গায়ে বসাতে চাই, তাই বেরিয়ে আসে 'I not know'। ইংরেজিতে not একা দাঁড়াতে পারে না, তার সামনে একটা auxiliary লাগবেই — কিছু না থাকলে do ডেকে আনতে হয়: 'I **do** not know'। আরেকটা ভুল এদেশে এত বেশি চলে যে অনেকে সেটাকে শুদ্ধ ভাবেন — 'I am agree with you'। বাংলায় 'আমি একমত' একটা অবস্থা, তাই am বসাতে ইচ্ছে করে। কিন্তু agree ইংরেজিতে নিজেই একটা মূল verb, তার কোনো সহায়ক লাগে না: '**I agree** with you'। একই ছাঁচের আরও কয়েকটা — 'I am understand' নয়, 'I understand'; 'He is know' নয়, 'He knows'। শেষে একটা কাজের কথা: auxiliary চিনতে পারলে ইংরেজির অনেকগুলো ছোট গঠন আপনা থেকেই খুলে যায়। সংক্ষিপ্ত উত্তরে auxiliary-টাই ফিরে আসে — 'Do you smoke?' 'No, I **don't**'; 'Has she come?' 'Yes, she **has**'। Question tag-ও সেই auxiliary ধার করে — 'You are coming, **aren't you**?', 'He went home, **didn't he**?'। আর মনে রাখুন কে কার সাথে বসে: he, she, it-এর সাথে **does** ও **has**; I, we, you, they-এর সাথে **do** ও **have**।

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • They are playing football in the field.তারা মাঠে ফুটবল খেলছে।
  • Does she speak English?সে কি ইংরেজি বলে?
  • I have eaten already.আমি ইতিমধ্যে খেয়ে ফেলেছি।

  • Have you finished your homework?তুমি কি তোমার বাড়ির কাজ শেষ করেছ?

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • She is play in the garden.

She is playing in the garden.

After the auxiliary 'be' (is), the main verb takes the -ing form for the continuous tense.

  • Does he likes tea?

    Does he like tea?

After 'do/does/did', the main verb stays in its base form (like, not likes).

  • I have went to school.

    I have gone to school.

After 'have', use the past participle (gone), not the past simple (went).

  • He don't like coffee.

    He doesn't like coffee.

With he/she/it, the negative auxiliary is 'does not' (doesn't), not 'do not'.

Tipsটিপস

  • Match each auxiliary to its job: be + verb-ing (continuous), have + past participle (perfect), do + base verb (questions and negatives). প্রতিটি auxiliary-কে তার কাজের সাথে মেলান: be + verb-ing (continuous), have + past participle (perfect), do + মূল verb (প্রশ্ন ও না-বোধক)।
  • After do, does or did, the main verb always stays in its base form — the auxiliary already shows the tense. do, does বা did-এর পরে মূল verb সবসময় মূল রূপে থাকে — tense তো auxiliary-ই দেখিয়ে দেয়।
  • 'Be' also builds the passive voice: be + past participle, as in 'The room is cleaned every day.' 'be' passive voice-ও তৈরি করে: be + past participle, যেমন 'The room is cleaned every day.'

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

What are auxiliary verbs?

Auxiliary (or helping) verbs are verbs used with a main verb to form tenses, questions, negatives and the passive. The three primary auxiliaries in English are be, do and have.

What is the difference between an auxiliary verb and a main verb?

A main verb carries the core meaning of the action (eat, play, know), while an auxiliary verb helps it grammatically. In 'She has eaten', 'has' is the auxiliary and 'eaten' is the main verb.

Can be, do and have also be main verbs?

Yes. The same words can act as main verbs with their own meaning — 'I have a car', 'He is a teacher', 'We do our homework' — but as auxiliaries they only help another verb.
