Appropriate Prepositions in English
Appropriate Preposition (কোন শব্দের পরে কোন preposition)
Introductionভূমিকা
An appropriate preposition is the preposition a particular word insists on: you are good AT English, afraid OF dogs, and you suffer FROM fever. These pairs are not decided by logic — they are fixed by usage, which is why translating from Bangla gives the wrong one so often ('angry on me' instead of 'angry with me').
Appropriate preposition মানে কোন শব্দের পরে কোন preposition বসবে সেটা — আপনি good AT English, afraid OF dogs, আর suffer FROM fever। এই জোড়াগুলো যুক্তি দিয়ে ঠিক হয় না, ব্যবহারেই ঠিক হয়ে আছে। এই কারণেই বাংলা থেকে অনুবাদ করলে ভুল preposition চলে আসে — 'আমার উপর রাগ' থেকে 'angry on me'।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Appropriate prepositions are the fixed preposition partners of particular verbs, adjectives and nouns — depend on, interested in, reason for. The preposition belongs to the word before it, not to the meaning of the sentence.
Appropriate preposition হলো নির্দিষ্ট verb, adjective বা noun-এর সাথে বাঁধা থাকা preposition — depend on, interested in, reason for। Preposition-টি আগের শব্দটির সাথে বাঁধা, বাক্যের অর্থের সাথে নয়।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
এই জিনিসটা নিয়ম দিয়ে বের করা যায় না, শব্দ ধরে ধরে শিখতে হয় — তবে তিনটি দলে ভাগ করে নিলে মনে রাখা অনেক সহজ। এক, Adjective + preposition: good at (কোনো কাজে দক্ষ), bad at, afraid of, fond of, proud of, jealous of, tired of, full of, aware of, capable of, interested in, famous for, responsible for, sorry for, worried about, angry with (মানুষের উপর) কিন্তু angry about (ঘটনার উপর), married to, similar to, different from, satisfied with, busy with, pleased with। দুই, Verb + preposition: depend on, rely on, insist on, listen to, belong to, apologise to (মানুষকে) for (কাজের জন্য), wait for, look for (খোঁজা), look after (দেখাশোনা করা), laugh at, consist of, suffer from, apply for (চাকরির জন্য) কিন্তু apply to (প্রতিষ্ঠানে), congratulate someone on, agree with (মানুষের সাথে) কিন্তু agree to (প্রস্তাবে)। তিন, Noun + preposition: reason for, cause of, solution to, answer to, need for, effect on, interest in, respect for, advantage of। এবার উল্টো দিকটাও দেখুন, কারণ ভুল এখানেই বেশি হয় — কিছু ইংরেজি verb-এর object-এর আগে কোনো preposition বসে না, যদিও বাংলায় একটা শব্দ থাকে: discuss the matter (নিয়ে আলোচনা করা হলেও 'about' নয়), enter the room (ভিতরে ঢোকা হলেও 'into' নয়), marry a doctor, reach Dhaka, resemble his father, obey the law, attack the enemy। আর 'return back', 'repeat again' — এই দুটোতে back আর again বাড়তি, বাদ দিন। ব্যবহারিক পরামর্শ: preposition আলাদা করে মুখস্থ করবেন না, পুরো জোড়া একটা শব্দ ধরে মুখস্থ করুন — 'goodat', 'dependon', 'sufferfrom' — এভাবে শিখলে বলার সময় জোড়াটাই একসাথে মুখে আসে।
Examplesউদাহরণ

- Everything depends on tomorrow's weather.সবকিছু নির্ভর করছে আগামীকালের আবহাওয়ার উপর। (depend-এর পরে সবসময় on)
- He has been suffering from fever for three days.সে তিন দিন ধরে জ্বরে ভুগছে। (suffer from, 'suffer in' নয়)
- The headmaster was angry with the boys for breaking the window.প্রধান শিক্ষক ছেলেগুলোর উপর জানালা ভাঙার জন্য রেগে গিয়েছিলেন। (মানুষের উপর angry with, কারণের জন্য for)

- There is no reason for such a delay.এত দেরির কোনো কারণ নেই। (reason-এর পরে for)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
My father is angry on me.
My father is angry with me.
Bangla says আমার উপর রাগ, and উপর translates to 'on', so 'angry on' feels natural. English fixes 'angry with' for a person and 'angry about' for a thing or an event.
She is good in spoken English.
She is good at spoken English.
Bangla ইংরেজিতে ভালো uses the -তে ending, and the nearest English word for it is 'in'. For a skill or an ability, English uses 'good at'.
He is suffering in fever.
He is suffering from fever.
Again the Bangla জ্বরে (-তে) becomes 'in'. 'Suffer' takes 'from' whenever an illness or a hardship follows it.
We entered into the room quietly.
We entered the room quietly.
Bangla ঘরের ভিতরে ঢোকা contains ভিতরে, so 'into' feels necessary. With a place, 'enter' takes a direct object. 'Enter into' is used only for abstract things — entering into an agreement or a discussion.
My cousin married with a doctor.
My cousin married a doctor.
Bangla ...র সাথে বিয়ে হওয়া supplies 'with'. In English 'marry' takes the person directly, and the preposition appears only in the phrase 'be married to someone'.
Please discuss about the matter with the manager.
Please discuss the matter with the manager.
'Discuss' already means 'talk about', so 'about' repeats it. The Bangla নিয়ে আলোচনা করা is what puts the extra word there.
Tipsটিপস
- Learn the whole pair as one item — 'depend on', 'good at', 'suffer from' — instead of learning the preposition separately. — Preposition আলাদা না শিখে পুরো জোড়াটা একসাথে শিখুন — 'depend on', 'good at', 'suffer from'।
- Two prepositions after the same word usually mean two different things: apply for a job, apply to a university; agree with a person, agree to a plan. — একই শব্দের পরে দুটো preposition বসলে সাধারণত অর্থ দুরকম হয়: apply for a job কিন্তু apply to a university; agree with a person কিন্তু agree to a plan।
- Watch the verbs that need no preposition before their object: discuss, enter, marry, reach, resemble, obey, attack. — যেসব verb-এর object-এর আগে কোনো preposition লাগে না সেগুলো খেয়াল রাখুন: discuss, enter, marry, reach, resemble, obey, attack।
- When you are unsure, check the word in a dictionary — a good entry always shows the preposition it takes. — সন্দেহ হলে অভিধানে শব্দটি দেখুন — ভালো অভিধানে শব্দের সাথে তার preposition-টিও দেওয়া থাকে।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is an appropriate preposition?
It is the preposition that a particular word takes by fixed usage — 'good at', 'afraid of', 'depend on', 'reason for'. The choice belongs to the word before the preposition, so it must be learned word by word rather than worked out by rule.
Is it 'good in English' or 'good at English'?
'Good at English' is the correct form, because 'good at' is used for skills and subjects. 'Good in' appears only in different structures, such as 'good in a crisis', where 'in' belongs to the situation rather than to 'good'.
Why is 'discuss about' wrong?
Because 'discuss' already means 'talk about'. Adding 'about' says the same thing twice. The same happens with 'return back' and 'repeat again'.
How can I learn so many pairs?
Do not learn them as a list. Learn each pair inside one short sentence you would actually say — 'I depend on my brother', 'I am afraid of dogs' — and the preposition comes back with the sentence.
