Prepositions of place tell us where something is. The three most common — in, on and at — work by size: 'in' for enclosed spaces, 'on' for surfaces, and 'at' for a specific point. Words like under, over, between and next to add even more detail. Together they let you describe exactly where things are.
Prepositions of place বলে দেয় কোনো কিছু কোথায় আছে। সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত তিনটি — in, on ও at — আকার অনুযায়ী কাজ করে: ঘেরা জায়গায় 'in', পৃষ্ঠতলে 'on', আর নির্দিষ্ট বিন্দুতে 'at'। under, over, between, next to-এর মতো শব্দ আরও বিস্তারিত যোগ করে। একসাথে এগুলো দিয়ে ঠিক কোথায় কিছু আছে তা বলা যায়।

A preposition of place shows the position of one thing relative to another. Use 'in' for enclosed or three-dimensional spaces (in the box), 'on' for surfaces and lines (on the table), and 'at' for a specific point or address (at the bus stop).
Preposition of place একটি জিনিসের অবস্থান আরেকটির সাপেক্ষে দেখায়। ঘেরা বা ত্রিমাত্রিক জায়গায় 'in' (in the box), পৃষ্ঠতল ও রেখায় 'on' (on the table), আর নির্দিষ্ট বিন্দু বা ঠিকানায় 'at' (at the bus stop) ব্যবহার করুন।

প্রধান তিনটি আকার অনুযায়ী মনে রাখুন: in — কোনো কিছুর ভেতরে বা ঘেরা জায়গায় (in the room, in Dhaka, in the water). on — কোনো পৃষ্ঠের উপরে যা লেগে থাকে (on the wall, on the floor, on the bus). at — কোনো নির্দিষ্ট বিন্দু বা অবস্থানে (at the door, at school, at the corner). অন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ preposition: under (নিচে), over/above (উপরে), between (দুইয়ের মাঝে), among (অনেকের মাঝে), next to / beside (পাশে), in front of (সামনে), behind (পেছনে), near (কাছে)। মনে রাখবেন: শহর/দেশে in (in Sylhet), কিন্তু নির্দিষ্ট ঠিকানা বা বিন্দুতে at (at 12 Green Road)।

- There is a picture on the wall behind the door.দরজার পেছনে দেয়ালে একটি ছবি আছে। (on / behind)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
The milk is on the fridge.
The milk is in the fridge.
Inside an enclosed space we use 'in', not 'on'. 'On the fridge' means on top of it.
He lives at Dhaka.
He lives in Dhaka.
Use 'in' with cities and countries; 'at' is for a specific point or address.
The clock is in the wall.
The clock is on the wall.
Something attached to a surface takes 'on', not 'in'.
She is standing between her friends.
She is standing among her friends.
Use 'between' for two things and 'among' for three or more.

- We say 'in a car' but 'on a bus/train/plane' — small private vehicles take 'in', large public ones take 'on'. — 'in a car' কিন্তু 'on a bus/train/plane' — ছোট ব্যক্তিগত যানে 'in', বড় গণপরিবহনে 'on'।

What is the difference between in, on and at for place?
Use 'in' for enclosed or three-dimensional spaces (in a room, in a city), 'on' for surfaces and lines (on the floor, on the wall), and 'at' for a specific point or address (at the door, at the office). Roughly: in is biggest, at is smallest.
When do I use 'between' and when 'among'?
Use 'between' when there are two things or people (between the two houses) and 'among' when there are three or more (among the students). This is one of the most common preposition mistakes learners make.
Why do we say 'on the bus' but 'in the car'?
Large public transport you can walk around in — buses, trains, planes — takes 'on'. Small vehicles you sit inside, like a car or taxi, take 'in'. So it is 'on the train' but 'in a taxi'.
