Introduction

One comma, and a sentence changes its mind. “The students who studied passed” says some studied and those are the ones who passed. “The students, who studied, passed” says every student studied and every student passed. Same words, opposite reports. English hands that much work to a punctuation mark, which is exactly why the mark cannot be sprinkled by feel — and that is the habit most of us bring from Bangla writing.

“The students who studied passed” মানে কেউ কেউ পড়েছিল, আর তারাই পাস করেছে। “The students, who studied, passed” মানে সব ছাত্রই পড়েছিল, আর সবাই পাস করেছে।

Definition

That introduces the information a reader needs in order to know which one you mean, and it takes no comma. Which introduces extra information the sentence could survive without, and it takes a comma in front of it.

Bangla Explanation

** দেখুন: 'The book **that** I bought yesterday is very good' — 'that I bought yesterday' ঢেকে দিলে দাঁড়ায় 'The book is very good', আর সাথে সাথে প্রশ্ন ওঠে — কোন বই? এবার: 'My laptop, **which** I bought last year, is very slow' — মাঝের অংশটা ঢেকে দিলে 'My laptop is very slow' পুরোপুরি বোঝা যায়, কারণ আমার ল্যাপটপ একটাই। 'Dhaka, **which** is the capital, is very crowded' — ঢাকা তো একটাই, আলাদা করে চেনানোর কিছু নেই। 'My mother, **who** is a teacher, retired last year' — মা একজনই। উল্টো দিকে যেখানে অনেকগুলোর মধ্যে একটাকে বেছে নিতে হচ্ছে, সেখানে কমা নেই: 'The bus **that** goes to Uttara leaves from here'। এক, মানুষের ক্ষেত্রে that-এর বদলে **who** লেখাই ভালো — 'the man **who** called me'। দুই, defining clause-এ relative pronoun-টা কর্ম হলে সেটা বাদ দেওয়া যায়: 'The book I bought is good' ✅; কিন্তু which বা who কর্তা হলে বাদ দেওয়া যায় না। তিন, একটা সত্য কথা যা অনেক বই এড়িয়ে যায় — ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে কমা ছাড়া defining clause-এ which লেখাও চলে ('the book which I bought'), তাই ওটা ভুল নয়।

Examples

  • The bus that goes to Uttara leaves from here.
  • This bus, which is always crowded, goes to Uttara.
  • The phone that I lost had all my photos.
  • My phone, which cost 30,000 taka, stopped working.
  • Cox's Bazar, which is in Chattogram, has the longest beach.
  • The man who called yesterday is waiting outside. (মানুষ — who)
  • The shirt I bought is too small.

Common Mistakes

  • Dhaka that is the capital of Bangladesh is very crowded.

Dhaka, which is the capital of Bangladesh, is very crowded.

Dhaka is already identified by its name, so the information is extra — comma plus 'which'.

  • The file, that you sent me, is corrupted.

The file that you sent me is corrupted.

'That' never takes commas. If you want commas, the word must be 'which'.

  • The teacher which taught us English has retired.

The teacher who taught us English has retired.

For people, use 'who' rather than 'which'.

  • This is the reason which I came late.

This is the reason why I came late. / the reason I came late.

After 'reason', English uses 'why' or nothing at all.

Tips

  • Remove the clause. If the sentence still identifies the thing, use 'which' with commas.
  • 'That' and commas never appear together. If you see both, one is wrong.
  • After a proper name — a person, a city, a company — it is almost always 'which' or 'who' with commas.
  • For people use who; for things use that or which. মানুষের জন্য who; জিনিসের জন্য that বা which।

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use 'which' without a comma?

In British English, yes — 'the bus which goes to Uttara' is acceptable. American style guides insist on 'that' there. Bangladeshi exams follow British usage, so both pass, but 'that' is never wrong.

What is a defining and non-defining clause?

Defining clauses identify which one you mean and take no commas. Non-defining clauses add extra detail and sit inside commas. That is the whole distinction under a technical name.

Can I use 'that' for people?

It is heard in speech — 'the man that called' — but 'who' is better in writing and expected in exams.

Why does the comma change the meaning so much?

Because it signals whether the information narrows the group or just describes it. 'The students who studied passed' means only some studied; 'The students, who studied, passed' means they all did.
