Introductionভূমিকা

You met this idea years ago in Bangla class and under a Bangla name: সকর্মক and অকর্মক. সে ভাত খায় takes an object; সে ঘুমায় does not. English draws exactly the same line, so nothing here is new. What is new is a handful of English verb pairs where one twin takes an object and the other refuses — and those pairs are where the marks actually go.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

A transitive verb hands its action on to an object — write a letter, eat rice, obey the law. An intransitive verb has no object at all — sleep, come, die, happen, laugh. Plenty of English verbs work both ways, and the sentence, not the word, decides which.

Transitive verb তার কাজটা একটা object-এর হাতে তুলে দেয় — write a letter, eat rice, obey the law। Intransitive verb-এর কোনো object থাকেই না — sleep, come, die, happen, laugh। ইংরেজির বহু verb দুইভাবেই চলে, আর কোনটা হবে তা ঠিক করে বাক্য, শব্দটা নয়।

Bangla Explanation

** 'He **runs** every morning' — object নেই, intransitive। 'He **runs** a stationery shop in Mirpur' — দোকান চালায়, object আছে, transitive। তাই 'এই verb-টা transitive না intransitive' — এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর কখনো শব্দ দেখে দেওয়া যায় না, প্রতিবার বাক্য দেখে দিতে হয়। এই ভাগটা শুধু নামের খেলা নয়, দুই জায়গায় সরাসরি কাজে লাগে। **এক, passive voice কেবল transitive verb দিয়েই হয়** — object না থাকলে তাকে subject বানানোর কিছুই নেই। এ কারণেই 'The accident **was happened**' বা 'He **was died**' কখনো শুদ্ধ হয় না; happen আর die-এর object নেই, এদের passive হয় না। শুদ্ধ রূপ 'The accident **happened**', 'He **died**'। Voice change-এর প্রশ্নে মাঝেমধ্যে ইচ্ছে করেই একটা intransitive verb বসিয়ে দেওয়া হয়, আর সেটাই ফাঁদ। **দুই, যমজ verb-এর জোড়াগুলো** — এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়, কারণ বাংলায় এক শব্দেই দুটো কাজ চলে যায়। **rise** (নিজে ওঠা — rise, rose, risen) বনাম **raise** (কোনো কিছুকে ওঠানো — raise, raised, raised): সূর্য নিজে ওঠে, তাই 'The sun **rises** in the east'; কিন্তু আপনি হাত ওঠান, তাই '**Raise** your hand'। **lie** (শোয়া — lie, lay, lain) বনাম **lay** (কিছু রাখা — lay, laid, laid): '**Lie** down for a while' কিন্তু '**Lay** the baby on the bed'। ফাঁদটা হলো lie-এর past রূপই lay, তাই 'He **lay** on the bed yesterday' শুদ্ধ। I raise my hand.' এভাবে শিখলে খাতায় কোনটা কোথায় বসবে, ভাবতে হয় না।

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • Rahim ate two plates of rice.রহিম দুই প্লেট ভাত খেল। (কী খেল? ভাত — transitive)
  • The baby slept for three hours.বাচ্চাটা তিন ঘণ্টা ঘুমাল। (object নেই — intransitive)
  • He runs every morning near the lake.সে প্রতিদিন সকালে লেকের পাশে দৌড়ায়। (এখানে run intransitive)
  • He runs a stationery shop in Mirpur.সে মিরপুরে একটা স্টেশনারি দোকান চালায়। (এখানে সেই run-ই transitive, object = shop)
  • The sun rises in the east.সূর্য পূর্ব দিকে ওঠে। (rise — নিজে ওঠে, object নেই)
  • Please raise your hand if you have a question.প্রশ্ন থাকলে হাত তুলুন। (raise — হাতকে ওঠাচ্ছেন, object আছে)
  • The accident happened near Jatrabari at midnight.দুর্ঘটনাটা মাঝরাতে যাত্রাবাড়ীর কাছে ঘটেছিল। (happen-এর object হয় না, তাই passive-ও হয় না)
  • The teacher explained the rule to the whole class.স্যার পুরো ক্লাসকে নিয়মটা বুঝিয়ে দিলেন। (কী বোঝালেন? নিয়মটা — transitive)

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • The accident was happened at Gulistan.

    The accident happened at Gulistan.

'Happen' has no object, so it cannot be made passive. The Bangla ঘটে যাওয়া feels like something done to the accident, which is why 'was' gets added.

  • His grandfather was died last Ramadan.

    His grandfather died last Ramadan.

'Die' is intransitive, so there is no passive form. If you need a passive-sounding sentence, use a different structure: 'He was killed in an accident' works because 'kill' takes an object.

  • The sun raises at about half past six in winter.

The sun rises at about half past six in winter.

'Raise' needs something to lift (raise your hand, raise the price). The sun goes up by itself, so the intransitive twin 'rise' is the right verb.

  • Lay down and take some rest.

Lie down and take some rest.

'Lay' must have an object — you lay a book on the table. With no object, the verb is 'lie'. The confusion is real: 'lay' is also the past form of 'lie'.

  • I am listening the news.

I am listening to the news.

'Listen' takes no direct object; it needs 'to' before the thing heard. 'Hear' is the one that takes the object directly: 'I heard the news.'

Tipsটিপস

  • Ask 'what?' or 'whom?' straight after the verb. An answer means transitive; no possible answer means intransitive. Verb-এর ঠিক পরে 'কী?' বা 'কাকে?' জিজ্ঞেস করুন। উত্তর পেলে transitive, উত্তরের প্রশ্নই না উঠলে intransitive।
  • Only transitive verbs have a passive form. If the verb takes no object, putting 'was/were' in front of its past participle — was happened, was died — is a mistake. শুধু transitive verb-এরই passive হয়। যে verb-এর object হয় না, তার V3-এর আগে was/were বসানো ভুল — was happened, was died।
  • Learn the twin pairs together with their forms: rise-rose-risen against raise-raised-raised, lie-lay-lain against lay-laid-laid. যমজ জোড়াগুলো রূপসহ একসাথে শিখুন: rise-rose-risen বনাম raise-raised-raised, lie-lay-lain বনাম lay-laid-laid।
  • Do not label a verb once and for all — check what it is doing in the sentence in front of you. কোনো verb-কে চিরদিনের জন্য এক দলে ফেলে দেবেন না — সামনের বাক্যে সে কী করছে সেটাই দেখুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

How do I find the object of a verb?

Ask 'what?' or 'whom?' immediately after the verb. In 'Karim called his brother', asking 'called whom?' gives 'his brother', which is the object — so 'called' is transitive here.

Can the same verb be both transitive and intransitive?

Yes, and many common verbs are. 'He runs fast' has no object, while 'He runs a shop' has one. Read, write, eat, sing and stop all work both ways.

Why can't intransitive verbs be made passive?

A passive sentence works by moving the object into the subject position. If the verb has no object, there is nothing to move, so forms like 'was happened' or 'was died' cannot exist.

What is the difference between lie and lay?

'Lie' means to rest on a surface and takes no object: 'Lie down.' 'Lay' means to put something down and always takes an object: 'Lay the book here.' The trap is that the past form of 'lie' is 'lay' — 'He lay on the floor for an hour.'
