Right Form of Verb (ক্রিয়ার সঠিক রূপ)

Introductionভূমিকা

Watch a student attempt this item and you will see the same thing every time: they look at the verb in the brackets and start trying forms until one sounds right. That is guessing, and the paper is designed to punish it. The sentence always plants a clue somewhere — a time word, an auxiliary, a conjunction — and the clue, not the verb, decides the answer. Find the clue first and the form arrives on its own.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Right form of verb means putting the verb in the brackets into the correct tense, number and voice, so that it agrees with its subject and with the time the sentence is describing.

Right form of verb মানে বন্ধনীর ভেতরে দেওয়া ক্রিয়াটিকে সঠিক কাল, বচন ও বাচ্যে বসানো — যাতে সেটা কর্তার সাথে মেলে, আর বাক্যটি যে সময়ের কথা বলছে তার সাথেও মেলে।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

প্রথমে **সূত্র খুঁজুন, তারপর রূপ বসান**। বারোটা নিয়ম প্রায় সব প্রশ্ন ঢেকে দেয়: **১. Present Indefinite** — always, usually, often, every day, daily, generally থাকলে। তৃতীয় পুরুষ একবচনে **s/es**: 'He (go) to school daily' → **goes**। **২. Present Continuous** — now, at present, at this moment: 'They (play) now' → **are playing**। **৩. Present Perfect** — just, already, yet, ever, never, recently, lately: 'I (finish) already' → **have finished**। **৪. Present Perfect Continuous** — since / for + সময়: 'He (read) since morning' → **has been reading**। **৫. Past Indefinite** — ago, yesterday, last night, in 1971: 'He (come) yesterday' → **came**। **৬. Past Continuous** — while + চলমান কাজ: 'While I (walk), it rained' → **was walking**। **৭. Past Perfect** — দুটো অতীত কাজ, before/after দিয়ে যুক্ত। যেটা **আগে** ঘটেছে সেটা past perfect: 'The train had left before we reached.' **৮. Future** — tomorrow, next week, soon: 'He (go) tomorrow' → **will go**। **৯. If/Unless (First conditional)** — if-এর অংশ **present**, অন্য অংশ **will/shall**: 'If it rains, we **will** stay' — if-এর পরে কখনো will বসে না, এটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি হওয়া ভুল। **১০. Second conditional** — 'If I (be) a bird…' → **were** (was নয়), আর অন্য অংশে **would + base**। **১১. Modal-এর পরে base form** — can, may, must, should, will-এর পরে ক্রিয়ার মূল রূপ: 'He can (do) it' → **do**। **১২. Subject-verb agreement** — 'Each of the boys **has**', 'Everyone **is**', 'The number of students **is**', 'A number of students **are**'। এছাড়া: **to**-এর পরে base ('to go'), **preposition**-এর পরে -ing ('good at swimming'), আর **let/make/see/hear + object**-এর পরে base ('He made me **do** it')। **এক, did বা will বসানোর পরেও verb-টাকে আবার সাজানো** — 'Did you **went**?', 'He will **goes**'। সহায়ক ক্রিয়া একবার কালটা তুলে নিলে মূল verb মূল রূপে ফেরে; এক বাক্যে কালের ভার একবারই বসে। **দুই, if আর when-এর ঘরে will বসানো** — 'If it **will** rain', 'When I **will** go home'।

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • He (go) to school every day. → He goes to school every day.'every day' — present indefinite, তৃতীয় পুরুষ একবচনে -es।
  • They (play) football now. → They are playing football now.'now' — present continuous।
  • I (not see) him since Friday. → I have not seen him since Friday.'since' — present perfect (বা perfect continuous)।
  • The train (leave) before we reached the station. → The train had left before we reached the station.দুটো অতীত কাজ — আগেরটা past perfect।
  • If you (work) hard, you will succeed. → If you work hard, you will succeed.if-এর পরে present, অন্য অংশে will — if-এর পরে will কখনো নয়।
  • If I (be) you, I would accept it. → If I were you, I would accept it.কাল্পনিক শর্তে 'were', সব পুরুষেই।
  • Each of the students (have) a book. → Each of the students has a book.কর্তা 'each', তাই একবচন ক্রিয়া — 'students' শুনে বহুবচন বসাবেন না।
  • He is good at (swim). → He is good at swimming.preposition-এর পরে -ing।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • If it will rain, we will not go.

If it rains, we will not go.

After 'if' English uses the present simple, never 'will'. This single error appears in more scripts than any other on the paper.

  • He has gone to Dhaka yesterday.

    He went to Dhaka yesterday.

'Yesterday' is a finished past time, so it takes the past simple. Present perfect never pairs with a finished time word.

  • Each of the boys are present.

Each of the boys is present.

The subject is 'each', which is singular. The nearby plural noun pulls the ear the wrong way.

  • He can plays cricket.

    He can play cricket.

After a modal — can, may, must, should — the verb takes its base form with no -s and no 'to'.

  • I am knowing the answer.

    I know the answer.

State verbs such as know, believe, like, want and understand are not used in the continuous form.

Tipsটিপস

  • Find the clue word before you touch the verb: every day, now, since, yesterday, tomorrow, if. ক্রিয়া ছোঁয়ার আগে সূত্র শব্দটা খুঁজুন: every day, now, since, yesterday, tomorrow, if।
  • Check the subject last. Singular subject, third person, present tense — add -s. শেষে কর্তা মিলিয়ে নিন। একবচন, তৃতীয় পুরুষ, বর্তমান কাল — -s বসবে।
  • In a passive sentence you always need be + past participle: 'The work is done'. কর্মবাচ্যে সবসময় be + past participle: 'The work is done'।
  • If two past actions are joined by before or after, the earlier one takes 'had'. before/after দিয়ে দুটো অতীত কাজ যুক্ত হলে আগেরটায় 'had'।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

How many marks does right form of verb carry?

It is usually a five-mark item in SSC and HSC English second paper, set as a passage with bracketed verbs. Because the clues repeat every year, it is one of the most reliably scorable parts of the paper.

What is the difference between 'used to' and 'is used to'?

'Used to' + base verb means a past habit: 'He used to smoke.' 'Is used to' + -ing means accustomed: 'He is used to smoking.' Boards set this trap almost every year.

Why is 'If I was you' wrong?

In an imaginary condition English uses the subjunctive 'were' for every person — 'If I were you', 'If he were here'. 'Was' is heard in speech but marked wrong in exams.

Which verbs cannot take the -ing form?

State verbs: know, believe, understand, like, love, hate, want, need, seem, belong. 'I am knowing' and 'I am wanting' are always wrong.
