Subject–Verb Agreement
Subject–Verb Agreement (কর্তা ও ক্রিয়ার মিল)
Introductionভূমিকা
Bangla verbs do change — but they change for respect, not for number. তুই যাস, তুমি যাও, আপনি যান: three forms, and every one of them is singular. Meanwhile সে যায় and তারা যায় are identical, because number never mattered. So a Bengali speaker's ear is trained to track the wrong feature entirely, and that is why the -s on an English verb keeps going missing even after years of study.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Subject–verb agreement means the verb changes form to match whether its subject is singular or plural. In the present simple, he, she, it and any single person or thing take -s; plural subjects take the plain verb.
Subject–verb agreement মানে verb-এর রূপ বদলায় তার subject একবচন না বহুবচন সেই অনুযায়ী। Present simple-এ he, she, it এবং যেকোনো একক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর সাথে -s বসে; বহুবচন subject-এর সাথে verb-এর মূল রূপ বসে।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
মূল নিয়ম দুই লাইনের: একবচন কর্তা হলে present simple-এ verb-এ **-s / -es** — 'He **runs**'; বহুবচন কর্তা হলে verb-এর **মূল রূপ** — 'They **run**'। 'The **box** of chocolates **is** on the table' — কর্তা box, chocolates নয়। 'The **quality** of the products **has** improved'। 'A **list** of names **was** posted'। সমাধান একটাই, আর এটা খাতায় দুই সেকেন্ডে করা যায়: of দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া অংশটুকু আঙুল দিয়ে ঢেকে দিন, তারপর verb বসান। এবার সেই কর্তাগুলো, যারা দেখতে বহুবচন কিন্তু আসলে একবচন। **everyone, everybody, each, either, neither, someone, nobody, anyone** — সবই একবচন: 'Everyone **is** happy', 'Each of the boys **has** a book', 'Neither of them **was** present'। **news, mathematics, physics, politics** — শেষে s থাকলেও একবচন: 'The news **is** good'। **সময়, দূরত্ব, টাকা** একক পরিমাণ হিসেবে একবচন: 'Ten miles **is** a long way', 'Five thousand taka **is** enough'। জোড়া কর্তার নিয়ম দুটো, আর দুটোই আলাদা। **and** দিয়ে যুক্ত হলে সাধারণত বহুবচন: 'Rahim and Karim **are** friends'। কিন্তু **or / nor / either … or / neither … nor** থাকলে verb মেলে **কাছের কর্তার** সাথে: 'Neither the teacher nor the students **were** late', আর উল্টে দিলে 'Neither the students nor the teacher **was** late'। এই কাছের-কর্তার নিয়মটা পরীক্ষায় ঘুরেফিরে আসে। আর দুটো জোড়া আলাদা করে মনে রাখুন, কারণ এদের চেহারা প্রায় এক অথচ verb আলাদা: '**The number** of students **is** increasing' (সংখ্যাটা একটা, তাই একবচন) কিন্তু '**A number** of students **are** absent' (কয়েকজন ছাত্র, তাই বহুবচন)। শেষে দলবাচক noun — family, team, government, committee: দলটাকে একক হিসেবে দেখলে একবচন ('The team **is** strong'), আর সদস্যদের আলাদা করে দেখলে বহুবচন ('The team **are** arguing among themselves')।

The list of items is on the desk.
The subject is 'list' (singular), not 'items', so the verb must be 'is'.

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is subject–verb agreement?
It is the grammar rule that a verb must match its subject in number and person: a singular subject takes a singular verb (she works) and a plural subject takes a plural verb (they work).
Do two subjects joined by 'and' take a singular or plural verb?
Usually a plural verb, because 'and' joins them into a plural subject: 'Rahim and Karim are friends.' The main exception is when the two words name a single idea or thing.
Are words like everyone and each singular or plural?
They are singular. Indefinite pronouns such as everyone, everybody, each, either, neither, someone and nobody always take a singular verb: 'Each of them is present.'
