Transformation of Sentences: All Rules
Transformation of Sentences (বাক্য রূপান্তর)
Introductionভূমিকা
Transformation asks you to say the same thing in a different grammatical shape without changing the meaning. Students lose marks not because the rules are hard but because they change the meaning while changing the form — and an examiner marks meaning first.
Transformation-এ একই কথা ভিন্ন ব্যাকরণগত রূপে বলতে হয়, অর্থ না বদলে। শিক্ষার্থীরা নম্বর হারায় নিয়ম কঠিন বলে নয় — রূপ বদলাতে গিয়ে অর্থ বদলে ফেলে বলে। আর পরীক্ষক আগে অর্থই দেখেন।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Transformation of sentences means changing a sentence from one form to another — simple to complex, affirmative to negative, assertive to interrogative — while keeping the meaning exactly the same.
বাক্য রূপান্তর মানে একটি বাক্যকে এক রূপ থেকে অন্য রূপে বদলানো — simple থেকে complex, affirmative থেকে negative, assertive থেকে interrogative — অর্থ হুবহু এক রেখে।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
**ক. Simple / Complex / Compound** Simple-এ একটাই finite verb, complex-এ একটা principal + একটা subordinate clause, compound-এ দুটো principal clause and/but/so দিয়ে যুক্ত। - Simple → Complex: participle বা phrase-কে clause বানান। 'In spite of his poverty, he is happy' → 'Though he is poor, he is happy.' - Complex → Compound: 'As he was ill, he could not come' → 'He was ill **and so** could not come.' - Simple → Compound: 'Besides going there, he helped me' → 'He went there **and** helped me.' চেনার সহজ সূত্র: **In spite of / Because of / To + verb** → simple; **Though / As / When / If / that** → complex; **and / but / so / or** → compound। **খ. Affirmative → Negative** (অর্থ এক রেখে) - only/alone → none but (মানুষ), nothing but (বস্তু), not more than (সংখ্যা) - must → cannot but / cannot help + -ing - as soon as → no sooner had … than - both … and → not only … but also - everyone → there is no one but - always → never fail to - superlative → no other + singular noun + so/as + adjective + as: 'Dhaka is the biggest city' → 'No other city is as big as Dhaka.' **গ. Assertive → Interrogative** (উত্তর নয়, জোর দেওয়া) হ্যাঁ-বাচক → না-বাচক প্রশ্ন, আর উল্টো: 'He is a good boy' → 'Isn't he a good boy?' / 'Nobody wants to fail' → 'Who wants to fail?' **ঘ. Exclamatory → Assertive** 'What a beautiful bird it is!' → 'It is a very beautiful bird.' / 'Alas! He is dead' → 'It is very sad that he is dead.' **ঙ. Active → Passive** — কর্ম কর্তা হয়, ক্রিয়া be + V3, আর মূল কর্তা 'by'-এর পরে। সবচেয়ে জরুরি কথা: **রূপান্তরের পর বাক্যটা আবার পড়ুন এবং নিজেকে জিজ্ঞেস করুন — অর্থ কি একই আছে?** না থাকলে নিয়ম ঠিক হলেও নম্বর নেই।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Simple: In spite of his poverty, he is honest. → Complex: Though he is poor, he is honest.'In spite of' (phrase) → 'Though' (clause)।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Though he is poor, but he is honest.
Though he is poor, he is honest.
One connector only. Adding 'but' after 'though' is the most frequent error in the whole item.
Only he can do it. → Nothing but he can do it.
None but he can do it.
'None but' is for people, 'nothing but' for things. Choosing the wrong one changes the sense.
As soon as he came, it rained. → No sooner he came than it rained.
No sooner had he come than it rained.
'No sooner' at the beginning inverts the clause: had + subject + past participle.
He is the best boy. → No other boy is as best as he.
No other boy is as good as he.
After 'as … as' the adjective returns to its positive form, not the superlative.
Changing the form but reversing the meaning.
Reading the new sentence back and checking it still says the same thing.
Meaning carries the mark. A grammatically neat transformation that says something else scores nothing.
Tipsটিপস
- Count the finite verbs. One means simple; a subordinating word means complex; and/but/so means compound. — Finite verb গুনুন। একটা হলে simple; subordinating শব্দ থাকলে complex; and/but/so থাকলে compound।
- 'None but' for people, 'nothing but' for things, 'not more than' for numbers. — মানুষে 'none but', বস্তুতে 'nothing but', সংখ্যায় 'not more than'।
- In an interrogative transformation you are adding emphasis, not asking a real question. — Interrogative রূপান্তরে আপনি জোর দিচ্ছেন, সত্যিকারের প্রশ্ন করছেন না।
- Always read the transformed sentence back before moving on. — পরের প্রশ্নে যাওয়ার আগে রূপান্তরিত বাক্যটা আবার পড়ুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
How do I tell simple, complex and compound apart quickly?
Count finite verbs and look for the joining word. One verb, no clause word — simple. A word like though, as, when, if or that — complex. And, but, so, or joining two full clauses — compound.
Does the meaning really have to stay identical?
Yes, and this is where most marks are lost. Examiners check meaning before form, so a neat transformation that says something different earns nothing.
Is 'none but' or 'nothing but' correct for 'only'?
'None but' for people and beings, 'nothing but' for things, 'not more than' with a number. All three appear on the same paper.
How many marks is this worth?
Ten marks in the SSC English second paper, where the item is called 'Changing sentences' and covers affirmative, negative, assertive, interrogative, exclamatory, simple, complex and compound. The same handful of structures recur, so systematic practice pays quickly.
