Simple, Complex and Compound Sentences: How to Convert
Simple, Complex ও Compound Sentence (রূপান্তরের নিয়ম)
Introductionভূমিকা
Most students can recite the definitions — one clause, one clause plus a dependent one, two independent ones — and still lose the marks, because the exam does not ask you to define. It asks you to convert. And conversion is a swap of connectors: 'in spite of' becomes 'though' becomes 'but', and the sentence walks from simple to complex to compound without its meaning moving at all.
সংজ্ঞাগুলো প্রায় সবাই বলতে পারে — একটি clause, একটি প্রধান + একটি অধীন clause, দুটি স্বাধীন clause — তবু নম্বর যায়, কারণ পরীক্ষায় সংজ্ঞা চাওয়া হয় না, **রূপান্তর** চাওয়া হয়। আর রূপান্তর মানে সংযোজক বদল: 'in spite of' → 'though' → 'but'। এভাবেই বাক্যটা simple থেকে complex, complex থেকে compound-এ হেঁটে যায়, অথচ অর্থ এক জায়গাতেই থাকে।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A simple sentence has one subject and one finite verb. A complex sentence has one principal clause and at least one subordinate clause. A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction such as and, but, or, so.
Simple sentence-এ একটি কর্তা ও একটি সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া থাকে। Complex sentence-এ একটি প্রধান clause ও অন্তত একটি অধীন clause থাকে। Compound sentence-এ দুই বা তার বেশি স্বাধীন clause থাকে, যা and, but, or, so-র মতো সংযোজক দিয়ে যুক্ত।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
SSC ইংরেজি দ্বিতীয় পত্রে 'Changing sentences' **১০ নম্বরের**, আর এই তিন গঠনের রূপান্তর তার প্রধান অংশ। **চেনার সহজ উপায়:** সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া (finite verb) গুনুন। - একটি → **Simple** - একাধিক, কিন্তু একটি clause অন্যটির উপর নির্ভরশীল (though, because, when, if, that, who দিয়ে শুরু) → **Complex** - একাধিক, সবগুলোই স্বাধীন, and/but/or/so দিয়ে যুক্ত → **Compound** **সংযোজকের ছক — এটাই আসল চাবি:** | ভাব | Simple | Complex | Compound | |---|---|---|---| | বৈপরীত্য | In spite of / Despite | Though / Although | but / yet | | কারণ | Because of / Owing to / Being | As / Since / Because | and so | | শর্ত | In case of / Without | If / Unless | and / or | | সময় | At the time of / On + -ing | When / As soon as | and | | উদ্দেশ্য | To + verb / In order to | So that | and | **উদাহরণ দিয়ে একই বাক্যের তিন রূপ:** - **Simple:** In spite of his poverty, he is honest. - **Complex:** Though he is poor, he is honest. - **Compound:** He is poor **but** honest. আরেকটি: - **Simple:** Being ill, he could not attend the class. - **Complex:** **As** he was ill, he could not attend the class. - **Compound:** He was ill **and so** he could not attend the class. **শর্তের ক্ষেত্রে compound রূপটা একটু অন্যরকম:** - **Complex:** If you work hard, you will succeed. - **Compound:** Work hard **and** you will succeed. - **Complex:** If you do not work hard, you will fail. - **Compound:** Work hard **or** you will fail. **Simple → Complex-এ noun/adjective phrase-ও clause হয়ে যায়:** - I know his name. → I know **what his name is**. - The man in blue is my uncle. → The man **who is in blue** is my uncle. - I know the time of his coming. → I know **when he will come**. **সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ:** compound বানাতে গিয়ে দুটো সংযোজক একসাথে বসানো — 'Though he is poor, **but** he is honest' ভুল। Complex-এ 'though', compound-এ 'but' — একটাই, দুটো নয়।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Simple: Because of his illness, he could not come.একটি সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া (could come), তাই simple।
- Complex: As he was ill, he could not come.'As' দিয়ে শুরু অধীন clause + প্রধান clause।
- Compound: He was ill and so he could not come.দুটি স্বাধীন clause, 'and so' দিয়ে যুক্ত।
- Simple: To pass the exam, he worked hard.উদ্দেশ্য বোঝাতে 'to + verb' — simple গঠন।
- Complex: He worked hard so that he could pass the exam.উদ্দেশ্যের complex রূপ 'so that' + can/could/may/might।
- Simple: I know his address. → Complex: I know what his address is.Noun phrase ভেঙে noun clause হয়েছে।
- Complex: If you run fast, you will catch the bus. → Compound: Run fast and you will catch the bus.শর্তবাচক complex → অনুজ্ঞা + 'and' দিয়ে compound।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Though he is poor, but he is honest.
Though he is poor, he is honest.
'Though' belongs to the complex form and 'but' to the compound form. Using both mixes two answers into one wrong one.
In spite of he is poor, he is honest.
In spite of his poverty, he is honest.
'In spite of' is a preposition, so it takes a noun or an -ing form, never a full clause.
Being ill, the class could not be attended by him.
Being ill, he could not attend the class.
The participle at the front must belong to the subject of the main clause, or the sentence says the class was ill.
He was ill so he could not come, and he stayed home.
He was ill and so he could not come.
A compound conversion joins the same two ideas as the original. Adding a third idea changes the meaning.
As he was ill so he could not come.
As he was ill, he could not come.
'As' already subordinates the first clause; adding 'so' makes it two connectors for one join.
Tipsটিপস
- Count the finite verbs first. One means simple; more than one means you must look at the connector. — আগে সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া গুনুন। একটি হলে simple; একাধিক হলে সংযোজকটা দেখুন।
- Learn the connectors in rows of three — in spite of / though / but — not one at a time. — সংযোজকগুলো তিনটি করে সারিতে শিখুন — in spite of / though / but — আলাদা আলাদা নয়।
- Never use two connectors for one join. One idea, one connector. — একটি সংযোগের জন্য দুটি সংযোজক নয়। এক ভাব, এক সংযোজক।
- After 'in spite of', 'because of' and 'without', write a noun or an -ing word, never a clause. — 'in spite of', 'because of', 'without'-এর পরে noun বা -ing বসে, clause নয়।

How do I tell a complex sentence from a compound one quickly?
Look at the joining word. Though, because, as, when, if, that, who and which make a clause dependent, so the sentence is complex. And, but, or, so and yet join equals, so the sentence is compound.
Can a sentence be both complex and compound?
Yes — grammarians call it compound-complex. The SSC exam does not ask you to produce one, so answer in the form the question names.
Why is 'Although he is poor, but he is honest' wrong?
Because English uses one connector per join. 'Although' already links the two ideas, so 'but' is a second link with nothing to link. It is the single most common error in this item.
Does the meaning have to stay exactly the same?
Yes. Marks are given for keeping the meaning while changing the structure. A grammatically perfect sentence that says something slightly different does not earn the mark.
