Assertive, Interrogative and Exclamatory: Changing Between Them
Assertive, Interrogative ও Exclamatory (বাক্যের রূপ বদল)
Introductionভূমিকা
An assertive sentence states, an interrogative asks, an exclamatory feels — and the exam asks you to move a sentence between them without changing what it means. The trick is that a question here is not a real question: 'Who does not love flowers?' is still a statement that everybody does. Once you see that, the rules stop feeling arbitrary.
Assertive বাক্য বলে, interrogative প্রশ্ন করে, exclamatory অনুভব প্রকাশ করে — আর পরীক্ষায় অর্থ ঠিক রেখে এক রূপ থেকে আরেক রূপে নিতে বলা হয়। মূল কথাটা হলো, এখানে প্রশ্নটা আসলে প্রশ্ন নয়: 'Who does not love flowers?' মানে আসলে 'সবাই ফুল ভালোবাসে'। এটা বুঝে গেলে নিয়মগুলো আর মুখস্থ মনে হয় না।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Assertive sentences make a statement, interrogative sentences ask a question, and exclamatory sentences express sudden feeling. Changing between them means rewriting the sentence in another form while its meaning stays identical.
Assertive বাক্য বিবৃতি দেয়, interrogative বাক্য প্রশ্ন করে, আর exclamatory বাক্য আকস্মিক অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করে। এদের মধ্যে রূপান্তর মানে অর্থ হুবহু এক রেখে বাক্যটিকে অন্য রূপে লেখা।
Bangla Explanation
- সহায়ক ক্রিয়া না থাকলে **do / does / did** আনতে হবে, আর মূল ক্রিয়া base form-এ চলে যাবে। | Assertive | Interrogative | |---|---| | Everybody loves flowers. | **Who does not love flowers?** | | Nobody can do it. | **Who can do it?** | | It is useless to cry. | **What is the use of crying?** | | There is no use in worrying. | **What is the use of worrying?** | | He is not honest. | **Is he honest?** | | Everyone knows him. | **Who does not know him?** | লক্ষ করুন — 'Everybody' ও 'Nobody' প্রায় সবসময় **Who** দিয়ে প্রশ্ন হয়। **২. Assertive → Exclamatory** দুটি ছাঁচ, দুটোই পরীক্ষায় গ্রহণযোগ্য: - **What** + a/an + adjective + noun + subject + verb **!** - **How** + adjective + subject + verb **!** | Assertive | Exclamatory | |---|---| | It is a very beautiful bird. | **What a beautiful bird it is!** | | The girl is very clever. | **How clever the girl is!** | | It is a matter of great joy that we have won. | **Hurrah! We have won.** | | It is a matter of great sorrow that he has died. | **Alas! He has died.** | | I wish I were a bird. | **Would that I were a bird!** | মনে রাখুন — **'very' উঠে যায়**। 'What a very nice bird it is!' লেখা ভুল। **৩. Exclamatory → Assertive** উল্টো পথ, তাই **'very' ফিরে আসে**: - What a nice bird it is! → It is **a very nice** bird. - How sweet the song is! → The song is **very sweet**. - Hurrah! We have won the match. → It is **a matter of great joy that** we have won the match. - Alas! I am undone. → It is **a matter of great sorrow that** I am undone. **চিহ্ন ভুললে নম্বর যায়।** Interrogative-এ **?**, exclamatory-তে **!** — খাতায় লিখতে ভুলবেন না।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Everybody hates a liar. → Who does not hate a liar?হ্যাঁ-বোধক বিবৃতি → না-বোধক প্রশ্ন; সহায়ক ক্রিয়া নেই বলে 'does' এসেছে।
- Nobody could solve it. → Who could solve it?না-বোধক বিবৃতি → হ্যাঁ-বোধক প্রশ্ন।
- It is useless to quarrel. → What is the use of quarrelling?'It is useless to' + verb → 'What is the use of' + verb-ing।
- It is a very fine morning. → What a fine morning it is!What + a + adjective + noun + কর্তা + ক্রিয়া; 'very' বাদ পড়েছে।
- The scenery is very charming. → How charming the scenery is!শুধু adjective থাকলে 'How' ছাঁচটি সহজ।

- Alas! He has failed. → It is a matter of great sorrow that he has failed.Alas → 'It is a matter of great sorrow that'; Hurrah → 'great joy'।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Everybody loves his country. → Does everybody love his country?
Everybody loves his country. → Who does not love his country?
A real question changes the meaning. The transformation needs a rhetorical question that still asserts the same thing.
It is a very nice book. → What a very nice book it is!
It is a very nice book. → What a nice book it is!
'What a' already carries the intensity, so 'very' must be dropped.
How beautiful is the flower!
How beautiful the flower is!
An exclamatory sentence keeps normal subject–verb order; it is not inverted like a question.
Who does not knows him?
Who does not know him?
Once 'does' is used, the main verb returns to its base form.
What a fine morning it is.
What a fine morning it is!
The exclamation mark is part of the answer. A full stop makes it an assertive sentence again.
Tipsটিপস
- Flip the polarity when you make a question: positive statement, negative question. — প্রশ্ন বানানোর সময় হ্যাঁ/না উল্টে দিন — হ্যাঁ-বোধক বিবৃতি হলে না-বোধক প্রশ্ন।
- Everybody and nobody almost always become 'Who…?' — Everybody আর nobody প্রায় সবসময় 'Who…?' হয়ে যায়।
- Use 'What a' when a noun follows, 'How' when only an adjective follows. — পরে বিশেষ্য থাকলে 'What a', শুধু বিশেষণ থাকলে 'How'।
- 'Very' disappears going into an exclamatory and comes back coming out of one. — Exclamatory-তে গেলে 'very' উঠে যায়, ফিরে এলে আবার বসে।
- Write the ? or ! before you move on. It is the easiest mark to lose. — পরের প্রশ্নে যাওয়ার আগে ? বা ! বসিয়ে নিন — সবচেয়ে সহজে হারানো নম্বর এটাই।

Why does an assertive sentence become a negative question?
Because the question is rhetorical, not real. 'Who does not love flowers?' expects the answer 'nobody', which means everybody loves flowers — the same claim as the original sentence.
When do I use 'What a' and when do I use 'How'?
'What a' is followed by an adjective and a noun: 'What a fine boy he is!' 'How' is followed by an adjective alone: 'How fine he is!' Choose by whether a noun comes after the adjective.
Do I keep 'very' in the exclamatory form?
No. 'What a' and 'How' already express the degree, so 'very' is removed. It comes back when you turn the exclamatory sentence into an assertive one.
Is this item only in SSC?
The ten-mark 'Changing sentences' item is named in the SSC second-paper mark distribution. The same conversions appear in HSC transformation exercises, so the rules stay useful after SSC.
