টেবিলে একটা বই আছে. টেবিলে দুটো বই আছে. Bangla puts আছে at the end, leaves it unchanged whatever the number, and needs no word at all for who or what is doing the existing. English wants the opposite on both counts: a word at the front that means nothing on its own, and a verb that changes with the number that comes after it. Two habits to unlearn in one very short sentence.
'টেবিলে একটা বই আছে।' 'টেবিলে দুটো বই আছে।' — বাংলা 'আছে' বসায় শেষে, সংখ্যা যাই হোক তাকে বদলায় না, আর কে বা কী 'আছে' সেটা বোঝাতে বাড়তি কোনো শব্দও লাগে না। ইংরেজি দুই দিকেই উল্টোটা চায়: সামনে এমন একটা শব্দ, যার নিজের কোনো অর্থ নেই, আর একটা verb যেটা তার পরের সংখ্যার সাথে মিলিয়ে বদলায়। খুব ছোট একটা বাক্যে দুটো অভ্যাস ভাঙতে হয়।

Use there is (there's) with a singular or uncountable noun and there are with a plural noun. The verb agrees with whatever comes after it, never with the word there — because there is only holding the subject's seat.
একবচন বা uncountable noun-এর সাথে there is (there's), আর বহুবচন noun-এর সাথে there are। Verb মেলে তার পরে যা আসে তার সাথে, কখনো 'there' শব্দটার সাথে নয় — কারণ 'there' এখানে শুধু subject-এর চেয়ারটা ধরে রেখেছে।

নিয়ম দুই লাইনের। একটা জিনিস বা uncountable noun হলে **there is** — 'There **is** a book on the table', 'There **is** some milk in the glass'। একাধিক হলে **there are** — 'There **are** two books on the table'। প্রশ্ন করতে is বা are সামনে আনুন — 'Is there a bank near here?', 'Are there any shops?' না-বোধকে — 'There isn't any water', 'There aren't any chairs'। দুটো ভুল এখানে সবচেয়ে বেশি হয়, আর দুটোই সরাসরি বাংলা থেকে আসে। **এক, there বাদ পড়া।** বাংলায় 'টেবিলে একটা বই আছে' বলতে কোনো কর্তা লাগে না, তাই ইংরেজিতেও আমরা লিখে ফেলি 'On the table a book is'। ইংরেজি বাক্যে verb-এর সামনে কিছু একটা বসতেই হবে, আর এখানে সেই জায়গাটা ভরাট করে **there** — শব্দটার নিজের কোনো অর্থ নেই, সে শুধু চেয়ারটা ধরে রাখে। **দুই, সংখ্যা অনুযায়ী verb না বদলানো।** বাংলার 'আছে' এক বইয়ের বেলাতেও 'আছে', দুই বইয়ের বেলাতেও 'আছে'; তাই 'There is two books' লিখতে আমাদের কোথাও আটকায় না। ইংরেজিতে verb-টা মেলে তার **পরের** noun-এর সাথে, তাই দুটো হলেই are। তালিকা লিখলে কোনটা বসবে? নিয়মটা সহজ: **প্রথম noun-টা দেখে ঠিক করুন।** 'There **is** a pen and two books on the table' — প্রথমে 'a pen', একবচন, তাই is। উল্টে দিলে 'There **are** two books and a pen on the table'। কানে যেটা স্বাভাবিক শোনায়, ইংরেজি সেটাই মেনে নিয়েছে। শেষে একটা তফাত, যেটা না জানলে বাক্যের অর্থ বদলে যায়: **there is** আর **there** — এক শব্দ, দুই কাজ। 'There **are** many people' মানে অনেক মানুষ আছে, অস্তিত্বের কথা বলা হচ্ছে। কিন্তু 'Many people are **there**' মানে অনেক মানুষ **সেখানে** আছে, জায়গার কথা বলা হচ্ছে। প্রথমটায় there অর্থহীন, দ্বিতীয়টায় there মানে ওই জায়গা। আর 'It is' বসাবেন না অস্তিত্ব বোঝাতে — 'It is a problem' মানে জিনিসটা একটা সমস্যা, আর '**There** is a problem' মানে একটা সমস্যা দেখা দিয়েছে।

Apples is plural, so the verb must be 'are'.

In negatives and questions we use 'any', not 'some'.
There have many people here.
There are many people here.
To say something exists, English uses 'there is/are', not 'there have'.
