Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla has quietly taught you half of this already. আমার কিছু টাকা আছে against আমার কোনো টাকা নেই — কিছু in the positive, কোনো in the negative, and no Bengali speaker ever mixes them up. That is exactly the some/any split. What Bangla does not prepare you for is the polite exception, the one where English breaks its own rule at a tea stall.

এর অর্ধেকটা বাংলা আপনাকে চুপচাপ শিখিয়ে রেখেছে। 'আমার **কিছু** টাকা আছে' আর 'আমার **কোনো** টাকা নেই' — হ্যাঁ-বোধকে 'কিছু', না-বোধকে 'কোনো', আর কোনো বাংলাভাষী এই দুটো কখনো গুলিয়ে ফেলে না। some আর any-র ভাগটা ঠিক এটাই। বাংলা যেটার জন্য আপনাকে তৈরি করে না, সেটা হলো ভদ্রতার ব্যতিক্রমটা — যেখানে ইংরেজি চায়ের দোকানে বসে নিজের নিয়মই ভেঙে ফেলে।

Some belongs in positive sentences, any in negatives and questions. Many goes with countable plural nouns, much with uncountable ones. Some, any and a lot of work with both kinds of noun.

Some-এর ঘর হ্যাঁ-বোধক বাক্যে, any-র ঘর না-বোধক বাক্যে আর প্রশ্নে। Many বসে গোনা যায় এমন বহুবচন noun-এর সাথে, much বসে গোনা যায় না এমন noun-এর সাথে। Some, any আর a lot of — এই তিনটে দুই জাতের noun-এর সাথেই চলে।

**Some বনাম any।** হ্যাঁ-বোধক বাক্যে some — 'I have **some** money'। না-বোধক বাক্যে ও প্রশ্নে any — 'I don't have **any** money', 'Do you have **any** money?' এটুকু বাংলা থেকেই চেনা, কারণ 'কিছু' আর 'কোনো'-র ভাগটা ঠিক একই। এবার সেই ব্যতিক্রম, যেটা না জানলে ইংরেজি রুক্ষ শোনায়। **অনুরোধ বা প্রস্তাব দিলে প্রশ্নেও some বসে** — 'Would you like **some** tea?', 'Could I have **some** water?' নিয়ম অনুযায়ী এখানে any বসার কথা ছিল, কিন্তু any বসালে প্রশ্নটা নিছক তথ্য খোঁজা হয়ে যায়, আর some বসালে সেটা আপ্যায়ন হয়ে ওঠে। কাউকে চা সাধতে গিয়ে 'Do you want any tea?' বললে শুনতে বেখাপ্পা লাগে; 'Would you like some tea?' বললে ঠিক শোনায়। এই এক শব্দের তফাতটাই ইংরেজিতে ভদ্রতার তফাত। Any-র আরেকটা অর্থও জেনে রাখুন, কারণ এটা হ্যাঁ-বোধক বাক্যে বসে আর অনেকে একে ভুল ভাবেন: any মানে **যেকোনো**। '**Any** student can join the club' মানে যে কেউ যোগ দিতে পারে। 'Come **any** day you like'। এখানে any নেতিবাচকতার সাথে কোনো সম্পর্ক রাখে না। **Much বনাম many।** গোনা যায় না এমন noun-এ much — much water, much time, much information। গোনা যায় এমন বহুবচনে many — many books, many people, many problems। প্রশ্ন করার সময় **How much** চায় পরিমাণ বা দাম ('How much sugar?', 'How much is the fare?'), আর **How many** চায় সংখ্যা ('How many students?')। সিএনজিতে ভাড়া জিজ্ঞেস করতে গিয়ে 'How many taka?' নয়, '**How much** is it?' বলবেন — টাকা এখানে অঙ্ক, আলাদা নোট নয়। শেষে একটা সুরের কথা, যা বই সাধারণত বলে না: **হ্যাঁ-বোধক বাক্যে much আর many ভারী শোনায়।** 'I have much work' ব্যাকরণে ঠিক, কিন্তু কানে বইয়ের মতো লাগে; স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজি হলো 'I have **a lot of** work'। much আর many-র আসল ঘর না-বোধক বাক্য আর প্রশ্ন — 'I don't have much time', 'Were there many people?' তবে too much, so much, very much, as many as — এই বাঁধা জোড়াগুলোতে হ্যাঁ-বোধক বাক্যেও এরা দিব্যি বসে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • How much books do you have?

    How many books do you have?

    Books is countable, so use 'many'; 'much' is only for uncountable nouns.

  • I don't have some time.

    I don't have any time.

    In negative sentences use 'any', not 'some'.

  • There are much people in the market.

    There are many people in the market.

    People is countable and plural, so it takes 'many', not 'much'.

  • Do you have some questions?

    Do you have any questions?

    Ordinary questions use 'any'; 'some' in a question is only for offers or requests.
