Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla will let you count anything you like. একটা তথ্য, দুটো আসবাব, অনেকগুলো পরামর্শ — attach টা or টি or খানা and the job is done, no exceptions. So when English announces that information, furniture and advice cannot be counted at all, it is not adding a rule to something you already knew. It is taking away a freedom your first language never questioned, and that is why informations and furnitures keep appearing in otherwise good English.

বাংলা আপনাকে যা খুশি গুনতে দেয়। 'একটা তথ্য', 'দুটো আসবাব', 'অনেকগুলো পরামর্শ' — 'টা', 'টি' বা 'খানা' জুড়ে দিলেই হলো, কোনো ব্যতিক্রম নেই। তাই ইংরেজি যখন বলে information, furniture বা advice গোনাই যায় না, সে নতুন কোনো নিয়ম যোগ করছে না। সে এমন একটা স্বাধীনতা কেড়ে নিচ্ছে, যেটা নিয়ে মাতৃভাষায় কোনোদিন প্রশ্নই ওঠেনি। এই কারণেই ভালো ইংরেজির মধ্যেও informations আর furnitures ঢুকে পড়ে।

A countable noun has a singular and a plural and can stand next to a number — a chair, three chairs. An uncountable noun has no plural and takes no number of its own; if you need to count it you borrow a unit — a glass of water, a kilo of rice, a piece of advice.

দুটো দল চিনে নেওয়া কঠিন নয়। **Countable** — গোনা যায়, বহুবচন হয়: book/books, boy/boys, egg/eggs। এদের আগে a বা an বসে, আর সংখ্যা বোঝাতে many, few, a few। **Uncountable** — বহুবচন হয় না, সরাসরি সংখ্যাও বসে না: water, milk, rice, sugar, money, information, advice, furniture, news, luggage, equipment, work, homework, traffic। এদের আগে a বা an বসে না; বসে some, much, little, a little। গুনতে হলে একটা একক ধার করতে হয় — a glass of water, a kilo of rice, a piece of advice, an item of furniture, a piece of news। এখন সেই তালিকাটা, যেটা এদেশে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়, আর কারণ প্রতিটার একটাই — বাংলায় শব্দগুলো দিব্যি গোনা যায়। **informations** ❌ (information), **advices** ❌ (advice), **furnitures** ❌ (furniture), **luggages** ❌ (luggage), **equipments** ❌ (equipment), **machineries** ❌ (machinery), **stationeries** ❌ (stationery), **homeworks** ❌ (homework), **moneys** ❌ (money), **news-এর সাথে are** ❌। এগুলোর প্রত্যেকটাই singular হিসেবে চলে, তাই verb-ও singular বসবে: 'This information **is** correct', 'The news **was** good', 'The furniture **is** new'। News শব্দটার শেষে s আছে বলে অনেকে একে বহুবচন ভাবেন — ওটা বহুবচনের s নয়। একটা কথা বই সাধারণত পরিষ্কার করে বলে না: বেশ কিছু শব্দ **দুই দলেই** থাকে, আর অর্থ বদলে যায়। hair ঢালাওভাবে uncountable — 'She has long **hair**'; কিন্তু আলাদা করে চুল বোঝালে countable — 'I found two grey **hairs**'। তাই 'I have black hairs' বললে মনে হয় মাথায় মাত্র কয়েকটা চুল গোনা যাচ্ছে। একইভাবে paper মানে কাগজ (uncountable) কিন্তু a paper মানে পত্রিকা বা প্রবন্ধ; glass মানে কাচ কিন্তু a glass মানে গ্লাস; iron মানে লোহা কিন্তু an iron মানে ইস্ত্রি; work মানে কাজ (uncountable) কিন্তু a work মানে শিল্পকর্ম। আর চায়ের দোকানে 'two teas' বলা যায়, কারণ সেখানে tea মানে চায়ের কাপ — পানীয় হিসেবে tea নিজে uncountable-ই থাকে। ব্যবহারিক দিক থেকে সবচেয়ে বেশি কাজে লাগে quantifier-এর ভাগটা। **many, few, a few, a number of** বসে countable-এর আগে; **much, little, a little, a great deal of, an amount of** বসে uncountable-এর আগে; আর **some, any, a lot of, plenty of, no** দুই দলেই চলে। বাক্য লিখে সন্দেহ হলে মনে মনে শব্দটার আগে 'two' বসিয়ে দেখুন — two advices কানে বাজলে বুঝবেন এটা uncountable, তখন much বা a piece of বসান।

She gave me a lot of advice.
Advice is uncountable — it has no plural and takes 'much' or 'a lot of', not 'many advices'.
We bought new furnitures.
We bought new furniture.
Furniture is uncountable and never takes an -s plural.
I need an information.
I need some information.
Information is uncountable, so it cannot take 'a/an'; use 'some' or 'a piece of information'.
How much books do you have?
How many books do you have?
Books is countable, so use 'many'; 'much' is only for uncountable nouns.
