Introductionভূমিকা

“I am going to market.” “He is best boy in the class.” Both sentences are missing one small word, and both are said hundreds of times a day across Bangladesh. The reason is not carelessness. Bangla has no articles at all — বাজারে যাচ্ছি carries no word for the — so there is nothing in your first language telling you a slot is empty. English leaves that slot in front of almost every singular noun, and it expects you to fill it.

“I am going to market.” “He is best boy in the class.”

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

A and an are the indefinite articles: one of something, not any particular one. The is the definite article: this specific one, and the listener knows which. Choose a or an by the sound the next word starts with, not by its spelling — an hour, a university.

A আর an হলো indefinite article — কোনো একটা, বিশেষ কোনোটা নয়। The হলো definite article — নির্দিষ্ট এই জিনিসটা, আর শ্রোতা জানে কোনটার কথা বলা হচ্ছে। A নাকি an বসবে সেটা ঠিক হয় পরের শব্দের **উচ্চারণ** দেখে, বানান দেখে নয় — an hour, a university।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

গোড়ার নিয়ম দুটো। a বা an বসে একটি অনির্দিষ্ট, একবচন, গণনাযোগ্য noun-এর আগে — a book, an apple, a teacher। আর the বসে নির্দিষ্ট জিনিসের আগে: যেটা আগে একবার বলা হয়েছে, কিংবা যেটা বক্তা-শ্রোতা দুজনেই চেনে। এই দুটোর খেলাটা এক বাক্যেই দেখা যায় — “I bought a book. **The** book was expensive.” an hour, an honest man, an MP, an FDR — এদের বানান h বা M দিয়ে শুরু হলেও উচ্চারণ শুরু হয় স্বরধ্বনি দিয়ে (আওয়ার, অনেস্ট, এম, এফ)। উল্টো দিকে a university, a European country, a one-taka note, a useful book — বানানে u বা o থাকলেও উচ্চারণ শুরু হয় 'ইউ' বা 'ওয়া' দিয়ে, যা ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনি। খাতায় সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে হলে শব্দটা মনে মনে উচ্চারণ করুন, তারপর কলম ধরুন। এবার the-এর সেই ব্যবহারগুলো, যেগুলো বাদ পড়লে বাক্য সাথে সাথে কানে লাগে। Superlative-এর আগে the বসবেই — “He is **the** best boy in the class”, “Dhaka is **the** largest city in Bangladesh”। নদী, সাগর, উপসাগর, দ্বীপপুঞ্জ, পর্বতমালা ও কিছু দেশের নামে the বসে — the Padma, the Bay of Bengal, the Sundarbans, the Himalayas, the United States, the Netherlands। কিন্তু একক দেশ, শহর ও মানুষের নামে বসে না — Bangladesh, Dhaka, Rahim। আরও যেখানে the বসে: পৃথিবীতে একটাই এমন জিনিসের আগে (the sun, the moon, the sky), দিকনির্দেশে (in the east), আর যেকোনো noun-এর পরে যদি of বা who/which দিয়ে সেটাকে নির্দিষ্ট করে দেওয়া হয় — “**the** book that I bought”, “**the** capital of Bangladesh”। আর যেখানে কোনো article বসে না, সেটাও ঠিক ততটাই জরুরি। ভাষা, খেলা, খাবার আর ঢালাও ধারণার আগে article বসে না — I speak Bangla, She plays football, I like rice, Honesty is the best policy। প্রতিষ্ঠানকে তার **কাজের অর্থে** বোঝালে article বাদ যায়: go to school (পড়তে যাওয়া), go to hospital (চিকিৎসার জন্য), go to bed, go to mosque। কিন্তু ভবনটা বোঝালে the ফিরে আসে — “My father went to **the** school to meet the headmaster।” একই কারণে খাবারের নামে article নেই — have breakfast, have lunch। শেষে সেই ভুলটা, যেটা আমরা সবচেয়ে বেশি করি: বাংলায় 'বাজারে যাচ্ছি', 'অফিসে যাচ্ছি' শুনতে ভালো লাগে বলে আমরা লিখি “going to market”, “going to office”। ইংরেজিতে হবে “going to **the** market”, “going to **the** office”। যাচাই করার সহজ প্রশ্ন: এই noun-টা কি একটামাত্র, নির্দিষ্ট, আর শ্রোতা কি জানে কোনটার কথা বলছি? উত্তর হ্যাঁ হলে the, না হলে a বা an।

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • I bought a book yesterday.আমি গতকাল একটি বই কিনেছি।
  • She ate an apple.সে একটি আপেল খেয়েছে।
  • The sun rises in the east.সূর্য পূর্ব দিকে ওঠে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I am reading book.

    I am reading a book.

A singular countable noun needs an article (or another determiner) — you cannot say 'reading book' alone.

  • She waited for a hour.

    She waited for an hour.

The 'h' in hour is silent, so it starts with a vowel sound and takes 'an'.

  • He is an university student.

    He is a university student.

University is pronounced 'yoo-niversity' — a consonant sound — so it takes 'a', not 'an'.

  • The honesty is important.

    Honesty is important.

General, uncountable ideas take no article when spoken about in general.

Tipsটিপস

  • Choose a or an by the sound of the next word, not its spelling: an MP, a European. পরের শব্দের বানান নয়, উচ্চারণ দেখে a বা an বাছুন: an MP, a European।
  • Use 'the' when both you and the listener know exactly which one you mean. আপনি ও শ্রোতা যখন ঠিক কোনটার কথা বলছেন তা জানেন, তখন 'the' ব্যবহার করুন।
  • Use no article for plural or uncountable nouns spoken about in general: Cats are cute; Water is life. সাধারণভাবে বহুবচন বা uncountable noun-এ কোনো article বসে না: Cats are cute; Water is life।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

What is the difference between a and an?

Both are indefinite articles for one non-specific thing. Use 'a' before a consonant sound (a car, a university) and 'an' before a vowel sound (an egg, an hour). Judge by sound, not spelling.

When do we use the?

Use 'the' for something specific that both speaker and listener can identify: something mentioned before, something unique (the moon), or something clear from the situation (the door).

When do we use no article at all?

Usually with plural or uncountable nouns spoken about in general (I like books; Rice is cheap) and with most languages, meals, sports and abstract ideas (She speaks English; Honesty matters).
