Bangla builds respect into the verb itself. বস, বসো, বসুন — three forms of one word, and every Bengali speaker knows without thinking which one a friend gets and which one a guest gets. English has exactly one form: sit. The politeness has to come from somewhere else, and if you do not add it, the sentence lands as an order. That is why a perfectly correct “Give me water” can make a foreign listener stiffen.
বাংলা সম্মানটা ঢুকিয়ে রাখে ক্রিয়ার ভেতরেই। 'বস', 'বসো', 'বসুন' — এক শব্দের তিন রূপ, আর কোন রূপটা বন্ধুর জন্য আর কোনটা অতিথির জন্য, সেটা প্রতিটি বাংলাভাষী না ভেবেই জানে। ইংরেজিতে রূপ একটাই: sit। ভদ্রতাটা তাই অন্য কোথাও থেকে আনতে হয়, আর না আনলে বাক্যটা হুকুম হয়ে গিয়ে পড়ে। এ কারণেই ব্যাকরণে নিখুঁত “Give me water” শুনে বিদেশি শ্রোতা একটু শক্ত হয়ে যান।

An imperative sentence gives a command, an instruction or a request. It starts with the base form of the verb, and the subject you is left out because it is understood: Close the door means You close the door.

গঠনটা সহজ: imperative বাক্য শুরু হয় verb-এর **মূল রূপ** দিয়ে — 'Come here', 'Read this page'। Subject 'you' লেখা হয় না, কিন্তু বোঝানো হয়। এখানে verb-এ কখনো -s বসে না, আর কোনো subject-ও বসে না। না-বোধক করতে সামনে **Do not** বা সংক্ষেপে **Don't** — 'Don't touch it'। আর সবাইকে নিয়ে প্রস্তাব দিতে **Let's** — 'Let's go', 'Let's start now'। এবার আসল কথাটা, যেটা এই অধ্যায়ে সবচেয়ে বেশি কাজে লাগে — **ভদ্রতার সিঁড়ি**। বাংলায় সুরটা বসে ক্রিয়ার রূপে; ইংরেজিতে বসাতে হয় বাড়তি শব্দে। মাত্রা অনুযায়ী সাজালে দাঁড়ায়: 'Sit down' (সরাসরি, শিক্ষক বা নির্দেশে চলে) → 'Please sit down' (ভদ্র) → 'Would you like to sit down?' (আমন্ত্রণ) → 'Could you please send me the file?' (অনুরোধ) → 'Would you mind waiting a moment?' (সবচেয়ে ভদ্র)। অফিসে, ইন্টারভিউতে বা বিদেশি সহকর্মীর সাথে কথায় খালি imperative প্রায় কখনোই ব্যবহার করবেন না; অন্তত please, নয়তো Could you দিয়ে শুরু করুন। একই কারণে খাবার বা পানি সাধার সময় বাক্যটা বদলে নিন। 'Take tea' বা 'Give me water' ব্যাকরণে ঠিক, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে রুক্ষ শোনায়। স্বাভাবিক রূপগুলো হলো — 'Would you like some tea?', 'Please help yourself', 'Could I have some water, please?' এই কয়েকটা বাক্য মুখস্থ থাকলে দাওয়াত থেকে রেস্টুরেন্ট, সবখানেই কাজ চলে যায়। Imperative-এর আরও কয়েকটা চেহারা জেনে রাখুন। **নির্দেশনা ও রেসিপিতে** এটাই স্বাভাবিক, কোনো ভদ্রতার শব্দ লাগে না — 'Boil the water', 'Press the button', 'Turn left after the mosque'। **সতর্কবার্তায়** — 'Mind the step', 'Do not enter'। **শর্তের সাথে জুড়ে** — 'Work hard, and you will pass', 'Hurry up, or you will miss the bus'। আর জোর দিতে সামনে **do** বসানো যায়: 'Do come early', 'Do be careful' — এটা রুক্ষ নয়, বরং আন্তরিক শোনায়। শেষে পরীক্ষার একটা কাজের কথা: imperative বাক্যের passive রূপ হয় **Let** দিয়ে। 'Do the work' → '**Let** the work **be done**'; 'Open the door' → 'Let the door be opened'; আর না-বোধকে 'Do not touch it' → 'Let it not be touched'। Voice change-এর প্রশ্নে এই গঠনটাই চাওয়া হয়।
