Stative Verbs: Which Verbs Cannot Take -ing
Stative Verb (যেসব verb-এ -ing বসে না)
Introductionভূমিকা
“Sir, I am not understanding.” It is said in classrooms across this country every single day, by students who are otherwise fluent, and nobody ever corrects it because everybody understands it. Then the same student writes it in an IELTS essay and loses a band. The verb is the problem: understanding is not something you do minute by minute, it is a state you are either in or not, and English keeps those verbs out of the -ing form.
“Sir, I am not understanding.”
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A stative verb, or state verb, names a condition that simply exists — knowledge, opinion, feeling, possession, perception — rather than an activity somebody carries out. A state does not unfold moment by moment, so these verbs stay in the simple form.
Stative verb, বা state verb, এমন একটা অবস্থার নাম বলে যা এমনিতেই বিদ্যমান — জানা, মত, অনুভূতি, মালিকানা, ইন্দ্রিয়ের অনুভব — কেউ করে চলেছে এমন কাজ নয়। অবস্থা মুহূর্তে মুহূর্তে গড়ায় না, তাই এই verb-গুলো simple রূপেই থাকে।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
প্রথমে দলগুলো চিনে নিন। **চিন্তা ও মতামত:** know, understand, believe, think (মত বোঝালে), remember, forget, mean, agree, doubt, recognise। **অনুভূতি ও পছন্দ:** like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, wish, care। **মালিকানা ও সম্পর্ক:** have (মালিকানা বোঝালে), own, belong, contain, include, consist। **ইন্দ্রিয় ও গুণ:** see, hear, smell, taste, seem, appear, look (দেখতে লাগা), sound, cost, weigh, matter। এদের সাথে -ing না বসার কারণটা সহজ। Continuous রূপ বোঝায় 'এই মুহূর্তে চলছে, একটু পরে থেমে যাবে'। কিন্তু জানা বা মালিক হওয়া তো চলমান কাজ নয় — আপনি হয় জানেন, নয় জানেন না; মাঝপথ বলে কিছু নেই। তাই 'I **know**', 'She **has** a car', 'This bag **belongs** to me'। এখন একটা জরুরি সতর্কতা, কারণ নিয়মটা এখানে কড়াভাবে বলা যায় না — **কয়েকটা verb অর্থ বদলালে দলও বদলায়।** have মালিকানা বোঝালে stative ('I **have** two brothers'), কিন্তু কাজ বোঝালে continuous চলে ('We **are having** lunch', 'She **is having** a bath')। think মত বোঝালে stative ('I **think** you are right'), কিন্তু চিন্তা করা বোঝালে continuous ('I **am thinking** about the exam')। taste আর smell গুণ বোঝালে stative ('The tea **tastes** bitter'), কিন্তু কেউ চেখে দেখছে বোঝালে continuous ('The cook **is tasting** the curry')। see দেখা বোঝালে stative, কিন্তু দেখা করা বোঝালে continuous ('I **am seeing** the doctor at five')। আর be সাধারণত stative, তবে আচরণ বোঝাতে continuous হয় — 'He **is being** rude today' মানে আজ এমন করছে, সবসময় এমন নয়। শেষ কথাটা সৎভাবেই বলা দরকার। এ দেশে 'I am not understanding', 'I am having a headache', 'I am knowing him' — এসব রোজ বলা হয়, সবাই বোঝে, আর কেউ থামিয়ে ধরিয়ে দেয় না। কথ্য ভাষায় এটা বাংলাদেশি ইংরেজির একটা চেনা বৈশিষ্ট্য। কিন্তু পরীক্ষার খাতায়, চাকরির লিখিত পরীক্ষায়, বিদেশি প্রতিষ্ঠানের ইমেইলে বা IELTS-এ এগুলো ভুল হিসেবেই গোনা হয়। তাই কথায় যা-ই চলুক, লেখার সময় simple রূপটাই বসান — 'I **don't understand**', 'I **have** a headache', 'I **know** him'।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- I know Rahim's father very well.আমি রহিমের বাবাকে খুব ভালো করে চিনি। ('I am knowing' নয়)
- I don't understand this question.আমি এই প্রশ্নটা বুঝতে পারছি না। (বাংলায় 'পারছি না' চলমান শোনালেও ইংরেজিতে simple)
- She has three sisters and one brother.তার তিন বোন আর এক ভাই। (মালিকানা / সম্পর্ক — stative have)
- We are having dinner at my aunt's house tonight.আজ রাতে আমরা খালার বাসায় রাতের খাবার খাচ্ছি। (এখানে have মানে খাওয়া, তাই continuous চলে)
- This bag belongs to my roommate.এই ব্যাগটা আমার রুমমেটের। (belong কখনো -ing নেয় না)
- The tea tastes too sweet today.আজকের চা-টা বেশি মিষ্টি লাগছে। (গুণ বোঝাচ্ছে — simple)
- The cook is tasting the curry to check the salt.বাবুর্চি লবণ দেখার জন্য তরকারিটা চেখে দেখছে। (এখানে কাজ, তাই continuous)
- I am thinking about moving to Dhaka next year.আগামী বছর ঢাকায় চলে আসার কথা ভাবছি। (think মানে চিন্তা করা — continuous চলে)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I am knowing him for five years.
I have known him for five years.
'Know' is a state, so it takes no -ing. And for something that started in the past and is still true, English uses the present perfect, not the present continuous.
I am not understanding your question.
I don't understand your question.
Bangla বুঝতে পারছি না is progressive in shape, so the -ing form feels like the natural translation. English treats understanding as a state and keeps it simple.
I am having a headache since morning.
I have had a headache since morning.
'Have' meaning to experience a condition is stative — 'having' works only for actions such as having lunch or having a bath. With 'since', the present perfect is needed as well.
She is wanting a new phone.
She wants a new phone.
Wanting is a state of mind, not something you do for ten minutes and stop. Want, need, like, love and hate all stay in the simple form.
This shirt is belonging to my brother.
This shirt belongs to my brother.
'Belong' describes a fixed relationship between an owner and a thing, so there is no continuous form of it at all.
Tipsটিপস
- Before adding -ing, ask whether the verb is something you DO or something that simply IS. States stay simple. — -ing বসানোর আগে ভাবুন — এটা কি আপনি করছেন, নাকি এটা এমনিতেই আছে? অবস্থা হলে simple রূপ।
- 'Have' is the one to watch: 'I have a car' (state) but 'I am having tea' (action). — 'have' নিয়েই সবচেয়ে সতর্ক থাকতে হয়: 'I have a car' (অবস্থা), কিন্তু 'I am having tea' (কাজ)।
- When Bangla uses পারছি বা করছি with know, understand or remember, do not copy the -ing into English. — know, understand বা remember-এর সাথে বাংলায় 'পারছি / করছি' এলে সেটাকে ইংরেজিতে -ing বানাবেন না।
- These forms are common in everyday speech here, and people will understand you — but write the simple form in exams, emails and interviews. — এই ভুল রূপগুলো এখানে রোজই বলা হয় এবং সবাই বোঝে — কিন্তু পরীক্ষা, ইমেইল আর ইন্টারভিউতে simple রূপটাই লিখুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Why is 'I am understanding' wrong?
Because 'understand' names a state of mind rather than an activity you perform. English keeps state verbs in the simple form, so the correct sentences are 'I understand' and 'I don't understand'.
Is 'I am having a headache' acceptable?
It is very common in speech in Bangladesh and everyone understands it, but it is marked as an error in exams and in formal writing. Use 'I have a headache', or 'I have had a headache since morning' if it started earlier.
Can a stative verb ever take -ing?
Some can, but only when the meaning changes to an action: 'I am thinking about it' (considering), 'She is tasting the curry' (checking it), 'I am seeing the dentist tomorrow' (meeting). The state meaning still stays simple.
What about 'I'm loving it'?
It is a deliberate, informal use — advertising and casual speech stretch the rule for effect. It is not a model for an exam answer, where 'I love it' is the safe form.
