Question Tags
Question Tags (প্রশ্নবোধক লেজ — 'তাই না?')
Introduction
A question tag is the short question added to the end of a statement to check something or invite agreement: 'You're coming, aren't you?' In Bangla it works like 'তাই না?', and the trick is choosing the right auxiliary and pronoun.
Definition
A question tag repeats the auxiliary (or modal) of the statement plus a pronoun, in the opposite polarity: a positive statement takes a negative tag, and a negative statement takes a positive tag.
Bangla Explanation
। মূল নিয়ম দুটি: (১) বাক্য positive হলে tag negative, আর বাক্য negative হলে tag positive হবে — 'You are here, aren't you?' / 'You aren't here, are you?' (২) বাক্যে যে auxiliary বা modal আছে (is, are, can, will, has ইত্যাদি) সেটিই tag-এ বসে; auxiliary না থাকলে do/does/did ব্যবহার করুন — 'She works hard, doesn't she?' tag-এর pronoun সবসময় subject-এর সাথে মেলে। কিছু বিশেষ রূপ মনে রাখুন: 'I am …, aren't I?', 'Let's …, shall we?', আদেশসূচক বাক্যে '…, will you?'।
Examples
- You are from Dhaka, aren't you?
- She can drive, can't she?
- They don't live here, do they?

Common Mistakes
She is happy, is she?
She is happy, isn't she?
A positive statement takes a negative tag, so 'is' becomes 'isn't'.
He is a doctor, isn't it?
He is a doctor, isn't he?
The tag pronoun must match the subject — use 'he', not the common habit 'isn't it'.
She works hard, isn't she?
She works hard, doesn't she?
When the statement has no auxiliary, the tag uses do/does/did (works → doesn't).
Tips
- Positive statement, negative tag; negative statement, positive tag. — Positive বাক্যে negative tag, negative বাক্যে positive tag।
- Reuse the auxiliary or modal from the statement; if there is none, use do/does/did. — বাক্যের auxiliary বা modal-ই tag-এ বসান; না থাকলে do/does/did ব্যবহার করুন।
- Learn the special tags: 'I am …, aren't I?', 'Let's …, shall we?', imperatives '…, will you?'. — বিশেষ tag মনে রাখুন: 'I am …, aren't I?', 'Let's …, shall we?', আদেশে '…, will you?'।

What is a question tag?
A question tag is a short question added to the end of a statement to check information or invite agreement, such as 'You're coming, aren't you?'. In Bangla it works like 'তাই না?'.
How do I choose the right question tag?
Follow two steps: make the tag the opposite polarity of the statement (positive → negative, negative → positive), and reuse the same auxiliary or modal; if there is none, use do, does or did.
What tag do I use after 'I am'?
The standard tag for 'I am' is 'aren't I?', as in 'I'm your friend, aren't I?'. The form 'amn't I' is not used in standard English.
