Introductionভূমিকা

“I am learning English since three years.” Two things are wrong and both have the same cause. Bangla says তিন বছর ধরে ইংরেজি শিখছি — a plain continuous, plus ধরে to carry the duration. English will not let the plain continuous stretch back across three years; it needs have been, and it needs for, not since. The good news is that Bangla already draws the for/since line for you: ধরে is for, থেকে is since.

“I am learning English since three years.” — দুটো জিনিস ভুল, আর দুটোরই কারণ এক। বাংলায় আমরা বলি 'তিন বছর ধরে ইংরেজি শিখছি' — সাধারণ চলমান রূপ, সাথে সময়টা বইতে 'ধরে'। ইংরেজি সাধারণ চলমান রূপকে তিন বছর পিছিয়ে টেনে নিতে দেয় না; তার লাগে have been, আর লাগে for, since নয়। সুখবর হলো, for আর since-এর সীমারেখাটা বাংলা আপনাকে আগেই দিয়ে রেখেছে: 'ধরে' মানে for, 'থেকে' মানে since।

The present perfect continuous is has or have, then been, then the -ing form: I have been working, she has been working. It measures a stretch of time that started in the past and runs right up to now, and usually is still running.

Present perfect continuous মানে has বা have, তারপর been, তারপর verb-এর -ing রূপ: I have been working, she has been working। এটা মাপে এমন একটা সময়ের টান, যা অতীতে শুরু হয়ে ঠিক এখন পর্যন্ত এসেছে — আর সাধারণত এখনো চলছে।

গঠন: subject + **has/have** + **been** + verb + **ing**। I, we, you, they-এর সাথে have been; he, she, it-এর সাথে has been। না-বোধক: haven't been, hasn't been। প্রশ্ন: 'Has he been studying all night?' এই tense-এর গোটা কাজটা একটাই — **কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছে সেটা বলা**। 'She **has been waiting** since morning', 'I **have been living** in Dhaka for ten years', 'It **has been raining** since last night'। খেয়াল করুন, প্রতিটা বাক্যে সময়ের একটা মাপ আছে; মাপটা না থাকলে সাধারণত এই গঠনটার দরকারই পড়ে না। For আর since আলাদা করার নিয়ম মনে রাখতে কোনো কষ্ট হওয়ার কথা নয়, কারণ বাংলায় ভাগটা আগে থেকেই আছে। **for** বসে সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্যে — বাংলার 'ধরে': for three years (তিন বছর ধরে), for two hours, for a long time। **since** বসে শুরুর বিন্দুতে — বাংলার 'থেকে': since morning (সকাল থেকে), since 2019, since Friday, since I was a child। বাক্য লেখার সময় নিজেকে জিজ্ঞেস করুন, বাংলায় 'ধরে' বলতেন নাকি 'থেকে' — উত্তরটাই আপনার শব্দ। এর সাথে present perfect-এর তফাতটাও দেখে নিন, কারণ পরীক্ষায় দুটোই পাশাপাশি আসে। **Present perfect** জোর দেয় ফলের উপর — 'I **have read** three chapters' (কতটা হয়েছে)। **Present perfect continuous** জোর দেয় সময়ের উপর — 'I **have been reading** since morning' (কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছে)। কাজ শেষ কি না, সেটা এখানে মূল প্রশ্ন নয়; মূল প্রশ্ন হলো আপনি ফল দেখাতে চান, নাকি সময়ের টান। শেষে দুটো সতর্কতা। এক, know, love, own, believe, belong-এর মতো stative verb এই গঠনে বসে না; সেখানে সাধারণ present perfect বসবে — 'I **have known** him for years', 'have been knowing' নয়। দুই, এই tense-এ সময়ের কথা না বলে বাক্য শেষ করলে অর্থ অসম্পূর্ণ থেকে যায়; 'I have been working' বললে শ্রোতা সাথে সাথে জানতে চাইবে — কতক্ষণ ধরে?

I am learning English for three years.
I have been learning English for three years.
For an action that began in the past and continues up to now, use the present perfect continuous, not the present continuous.
She has been waiting since three hours.
She has been waiting for three hours.
Use 'for' with a length of time (three hours) and 'since' with a starting point (three o'clock).
He has been knowing me for years.
He has known me for years.
'Know' is a stative verb, so it takes the present perfect, not the continuous form.
They has been working since Monday.
They have been working since Monday.
'They' is plural and takes 'have been', not 'has been'.
