Possessive Case in English ('s, s' and of)
Possessive Case (সম্বন্ধ পদ — 's, s' ও of)
Introductionভূমিকা
One apostrophe, moved by a single letter, changes the size of a building. The student's hostel houses one student; the students' hostel houses hundreds. Nothing else in the sentence tells the reader which you meant — not the words, not the order, only that mark. It is the smallest thing in English writing that carries this much weight, and it is the thing our signboards get wrong most often.
একটা apostrophe, এক অক্ষর সরে গেলেই একটা ভবনের আকার বদলে যায়। The student's hostel-এ থাকে একজন ছাত্র; the students' hostel-এ থাকে কয়েকশ। বাক্যের আর কিছুই পাঠককে বলে না আপনি কোনটা বোঝাতে চেয়েছেন — শব্দ নয়, ক্রম নয়, কেবল ওই চিহ্নটাই। ইংরেজি লেখায় এত ছোট আর এত ভারী জিনিস আর নেই, আর আমাদের সাইনবোর্ডে এটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
The possessive case is the form a noun takes to show ownership or a close relationship. A singular noun adds 's — my brother's phone. A plural noun that already ends in s adds only the apostrophe — the girls' school. The apostrophe goes after the owner, whoever the owner turns out to be.
Possessive case হলো noun-এর সেই রূপ, যা মালিকানা বা ঘনিষ্ঠ সম্পর্ক বোঝায়। একবচন noun-এ 's বসে — my brother's phone। যে বহুবচন noun আগে থেকেই s দিয়ে শেষ, তাতে শুধু apostrophe — the girls' school। চিহ্নটা বসে মালিকের ঠিক পরে, মালিক যেই হোক।
Bangla Explanation
**এক, একবচন noun হলে 's**: Rahim's book, my sister's phone, the dog's tail, the company's decision। **দুই, বহুবচন noun যদি s দিয়ে শেষ হয়, তাহলে শুধু apostrophe** — বাড়তি s নয়: the students' hostel, the boys' school, the teachers' room। **তিন, বহুবচন হয়েও যদি s দিয়ে শেষ না হয়** — children, men, women, people — তাহলে আবার 's: children's park, women's college, people's opinion। এই তিন নম্বরটাতেই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়, আর ঢাকার পার্কের সাইনে প্রায়ই লেখা থাকে 'Childrens' Park' — যেটা দুই দিক থেকেই ভুল; শুদ্ধ রূপ **Children's Park**। **চার, প্রাণহীন জিনিসের ক্ষেত্রে সাধারণত of** বসে: the leg of the table, the title of the book, the roof of the house। তবে নিয়মটা কড়া নয়, তাই অন্ধভাবে মানবেন না। সময়, পরিমাণ, দেশ, শহর, প্রতিষ্ঠান আর সংবাদপত্রের ভাষায় জিনিসের সাথেও 's একদম স্বাভাবিক: a day's work, two weeks' notice, ten minutes' walk, Bangladesh's economy, Dhaka's traffic, the government's decision। আর its (তার) আর it's (it is) গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন না — মালিকানার its-এ কোনো apostrophe নেই।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- This is my brother's motorcycle.এটা আমার ভাইয়ের মোটরসাইকেল। (একবচন — 's)
- The students' hostel is behind the college building.ছাত্রদের হোস্টেলটা কলেজ ভবনের পিছনে। (students বহুবচন, s দিয়ে শেষ — শুধু apostrophe)
- There is a children's park near our house.আমাদের বাসার কাছে একটা শিশুপার্ক আছে। (children বহুবচন হলেও s দিয়ে শেষ নয় — তাই 's)
- The leg of the table is broken.টেবিলের পায়াটা ভাঙা। (প্রাণহীন জিনিসে of স্বাভাবিক)
- She has given one month's notice at her office.সে অফিসে এক মাসের নোটিশ দিয়েছে। (সময়ের ক্ষেত্রে 's চলে)
- Rahim and Karim's shop is doing well.রহিম ও করিমের দোকানটা ভালো চলছে। (দুজনের একটাই দোকান — শেষ নামে 's)
- Dhaka's traffic gets worse every year.ঢাকার যানজট প্রতি বছর বাড়ছে। (শহরের নামে 's স্বাভাবিক)
- Have you read today's newspaper?আজকের পত্রিকাটা পড়েছেন? (today's — সময়ের সাথে 's)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
This is my friends house.
This is my friend's house.
Without the apostrophe, 'friends' is just a plural — the sentence says you have friends, not that the house belongs to one of them. Bangla marks the owner with -এর; English marks it with the apostrophe, and leaving it out removes the meaning.
The girls hostel is closed today.
The girls' hostel is closed today.
'Girls' is plural and already ends in s, so the possessive is marked by an apostrophe after the s — not by leaving it out.
Childrens' park
Children's park
'Children' is already the plural of child, so no extra s is needed before the apostrophe. This appears on signboards all over the country, and it is wrong twice over.
The book of Rahim is new.
Rahim's book is new.
Bangla রহিমের বই attaches -এর to the owner, and 'of' looks like the same tool. For people, English strongly prefers 's, and 'the book of Rahim' sounds foreign.
Fresh Mango's for sale
Fresh Mangoes for sale
An apostrophe never makes a plural. It marks possession or a missing letter, and neither applies to a pile of mangoes.
The dog wagged it's tail.
The dog wagged its tail.
'It's' is the short form of 'it is'. The possessive 'its' has no apostrophe at all — it is the one possessive that breaks the pattern.
Tipsটিপস
- Find the owner first, then put the apostrophe immediately after the owner word. Owner + ' + s. — আগে মালিক কে সেটা ঠিক করুন, তারপর মালিকের শব্দটির ঠিক পরেই apostrophe বসান। মালিক + ' + s।
- If the owner word already ends in s because it is plural, the apostrophe goes after that s and no new s is added. — মালিকের শব্দটি বহুবচন হওয়ার কারণে s দিয়ে শেষ হলে সেই s-এর পরেই apostrophe বসবে, নতুন করে s যোগ হবে না।
- Never use an apostrophe to make a plural — not for years (1990s), not for names, not for mangoes. — বহুবচন বানাতে কখনো apostrophe ব্যবহার করবেন না — বছরেও নয় (1990s), নামেও নয়, ফলেও নয়।
- For people and animals prefer 's; for lifeless things 'of' is often smoother — but time, places and organisations happily take 's. — মানুষ ও প্রাণীর ক্ষেত্রে 's ব্যবহার করুন; প্রাণহীন জিনিসে of প্রায়ই বেশি স্বাভাবিক — তবে সময়, স্থান আর প্রতিষ্ঠানের সাথে 's দিব্যি চলে।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
When do I use 's and when do I use 'of'?
Use 's for people, animals and organisations (Rahim's bag, the company's policy), and 'of' for parts of lifeless things (the cover of the book). Time, distance, countries and cities also take 's: a day's work, Dhaka's traffic.
Where does the apostrophe go for plural words?
If the plural already ends in s, put the apostrophe after it and add nothing: the boys' hostel, the farmers' market. If the plural does not end in s — children, men, women, people — add 's as usual: the men's team.
Is it James' book or James's book?
Both are used and both are accepted. Adding 's — James's book — matches how the word is actually pronounced and is the more common modern choice, so it is the safer one to write.
Why is 'Mango's for sale' wrong?
Because an apostrophe never forms a plural in English. It shows possession or a missing letter. The plural of mango is mangoes, with no apostrophe anywhere.
