Past simple and past continuous both talk about the past, but they do different jobs. The past simple tells you an action finished; the past continuous tells you an action was in progress. Bangladeshi learners often mix them, so let us make the difference clear.
Past simple ও past continuous — দুটোই অতীতের কথা বলে, কিন্তু কাজ আলাদা। Past simple বোঝায় কাজটি শেষ হয়ে গেছে; past continuous বোঝায় কাজটি তখন চলছিল। শিক্ষার্থীরা প্রায়ই দুটো গুলিয়ে ফেলে, তাই পার্থক্যটা পরিষ্কার করি।

The past simple uses the second form of the verb (walked, went, ate) for a completed action. The past continuous uses was/were + verb-ing (was walking, were eating) for an action in progress at a past moment.
Past simple-এ শেষ হওয়া কাজের জন্য verb-এর past form বসে (walked, went, ate)। Past continuous-এ অতীতের কোনো মুহূর্তে চলমান কাজের জন্য was/were + verb-ing বসে (was walking, were eating)।

Past simple: অতীতে সম্পূর্ণ হয়ে যাওয়া কাজ বোঝায় — regular verb-এ -ed যোগ হয় (play → played), irregular verb-এর আলাদা রূপ থাকে (go → went, eat → ate)। Past continuous: অতীতের নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে চলমান কাজ বোঝায়, গঠন was/were + verb-ing। I / he / she / it-এর সাথে was, আর you / we / they-এর সাথে were বসে। প্রায়ই একটি বাক্যে দুটোই আসে: দীর্ঘ চলমান কাজ (continuous) চলাকালীন হঠাৎ ঘটে যাওয়া ছোট কাজ (simple) — “While I was cooking, the phone rang.” know, like, want-এর মতো stative verb সাধারণত continuous-এ বসে না।

- It was raining all morning.সারা সকাল বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল।
- Did you see the match last night?তুমি কি গতরাতে ম্যাচটা দেখেছিলে?
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I was go to school.
I went to school.
For a finished action use the past simple (went). 'was/were' needs verb-ing, not the base form.
She were cooking dinner.
She was cooking dinner.
Use 'was' with I/he/she/it and 'were' with you/we/they.
When she called, I cooked rice.
When she called, I was cooking rice.
The longer background action already in progress takes the past continuous (was cooking).
I was knowing the answer.
I knew the answer.
Stative verbs like know, like and want are not usually used in the continuous form.

- Ask yourself: did the action finish (past simple) or was it in progress (past continuous)? — নিজেকে প্রশ্ন করুন: কাজটি কি শেষ হয়েছে (past simple), নাকি চলছিল (past continuous)?
- In one sentence, the long action is continuous and the sudden action that interrupts it is simple. — এক বাক্যে দীর্ঘ কাজটি continuous আর হঠাৎ বাধা দেওয়া কাজটি simple হয়।
- Remember was = I/he/she/it and were = you/we/they. — মনে রাখুন was = I/he/she/it আর were = you/we/they।

What is the difference between past simple and past continuous?
