Introductionভূমিকা

Someone asks what you did last night. “I read a book” closes the matter — you read it, it is done. “I was reading a book” leaves the door open; the listener now waits for what happened next, because that sentence is a background, not an answer. Both are correct English. They simply promise the listener different things, and choosing the wrong one is how a story ends up sounding like it never finishes.

The past simple gives the completed action — walked, went, ate. The past continuous gives the action in progress at a past moment — was walking, were eating. One reports an event; the other paints the situation the event happened inside.

Past simple দেয় শেষ হয়ে যাওয়া কাজটা — walked, went, ate। Past continuous দেয় অতীতের কোনো মুহূর্তে চলতে থাকা কাজটা — was walking, were eating। একটা ঘটনার খবর দেয়, আরেকটা আঁকে সেই পরিস্থিতি, যার ভেতরে ঘটনাটা ঘটেছিল।

গঠন দুটো আলাদা করে দেখে নিন। **Past simple** — regular verb-এ -ed (play → played), irregular verb-এর আলাদা রূপ (go → went, eat → ate), আর কর্তা যেই হোক রূপ এক। **Past continuous** — was/were + verb + ing; I, he, she, it-এর সাথে was, আর you, we, they-এর সাথে were। এক বাক্যে দুটোই এলে ভাগটা সবসময় একই: **দীর্ঘ চলমান কাজে continuous, তার মাঝখানে হঠাৎ ঘটে যাওয়া কাজে simple**। 'While I **was cooking**, the phone **rang**'। 'She **was crossing** the road when a rickshaw **hit** her'। যেটা পটভূমি সেটা -ing নেয়, আর যেটা ধাক্কা সেটা past simple। এই একটা ছবি মাথায় রাখলে when আর while নিয়ে আর ভাবতে হবে না — while-এর পরে চলমান কাজ, when-এর পরে হঠাৎ ঘটা কাজ। এখন সেই সমস্যাটা, যেটা রচনা বা গল্প লেখার সময় সবচেয়ে বেশি চোখে পড়ে। বর্ণনা 'সুন্দর' করার চেষ্টায় অনেকে গোটা গল্পটাই past continuous-এ লিখে ফেলেন — 'I was going to the fair. I was buying a balloon. I was meeting my friend.' ব্যাকরণে প্রতিটা বাক্য ঠিক, কিন্তু গল্পটা কোথাও এগোয় না, কারণ কোনো কাজই শেষ হচ্ছে না। ঘটনার ধারাবাহিকতা সবসময় **past simple**-এ লিখতে হয় — 'I went to the fair. I bought a balloon. I met my friend.' Past continuous রাখুন কেবল সেই জায়গায়, যেখানে সত্যিই পটভূমি আঁকতে চান: 'It **was raining** when I **reached** the fair'। আরও দুটো ছোট কথা, যেগুলো খাতায় নম্বর বাঁচায়। প্রথমত, অভ্যাস বা বারবার ঘটা কাজে past simple বসে, continuous নয় — 'He **played** football every Friday' ✅। দ্বিতীয়ত, know, like, want, believe, understand, remember-এর মতো stative verb continuous রূপে বসে না — 'I **knew** him well' ✅, 'I was knowing him' ❌। এই দুটো মিলিয়ে দেখলেই বোঝা যায়, past continuous আসলে সংখ্যায় কম জায়গায় বসে, কিন্তু যেখানে বসে সেখানে অন্য কিছুই কাজ করে না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

I was go to school.
I went to school.
For a finished action use the past simple (went). 'was/were' needs verb-ing, not the base form.
She were cooking dinner.
She was cooking dinner.
Use 'was' with I/he/she/it and 'were' with you/we/they.
When she called, I cooked rice.
When she called, I was cooking rice.
The longer background action already in progress takes the past continuous (was cooking).
I was knowing the answer.
I knew the answer.
Stative verbs like know, like and want are not usually used in the continuous form.

Remember was = I/he/she/it and were = you/we/they. — মনে রাখুন was = I/he/she/it আর were = you/we/they।
