Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Past Perfect Continuous Tense (পুরাঘটিত ঘটমান অতীত কাল)
Introduction
Stand at the bus stand in Gabtoli and watch a bus finally arrive. Somebody who has just walked up gets on. Somebody else has been standing there since seven in the morning. Both of them boarded the same bus, and English keeps a separate tense for the second person — they had been waiting for two hours when the bus arrived. It measures the stretch of time that ran up to a past moment, and that is all it does.
দুজনেই একই বাসে উঠল, কিন্তু দ্বিতীয়জনের জন্য ইংরেজি আলাদা একটা tense রেখে দিয়েছে — they had been waiting for two hours when the bus arrived।
Definition
The past perfect continuous is had been plus the -ing form, identical for every subject: I had been working, she had been working, they had been working. It shows how long an action had been running before another past event cut across it.
I had been working, she had been working, they had been working।
Bangla Explanation
গঠন: subject + **had been** + verb + **ing**। না-বোধক: had not been, সংক্ষেপে hadn't been। প্রশ্ন: 'Had you been waiting long?' 'They **had been waiting** for an hour when the bus **arrived**'। কারণ বোঝাতেও এটাই সবচেয়ে স্বাভাবিক — 'She **was** tired because she **had been working** all day'; 'The ground **was** wet because it **had been raining**'। মনে রাখার সংকেত: বাক্যে যদি **কতক্ষণ ধরে** কথাটা থাকে — for two hours, since morning, all day, for a long time — আর সেই সময়টা অতীতের কোনো ঘটনায় গিয়ে থেমেছে, তখনই had been + ing। Since আর for-এর ভাগটাও এখানে একই: **for** বসে সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্যে (for two hours, for three years), আর **since** বসে শুরুর বিন্দুতে (since morning, since 2019)। আর শেষ সতর্কতা — know, believe, understand, own, belong-এর মতো stative verb continuous রূপ নেয় না; ওখানে সাধারণ past perfect বসবে: 'I **had known** him for years', 'had been knowing' নয়।

Common Mistakes
She had been work all day.
She had been working all day.
After 'had been' the main verb must take the -ing form (work → working).
They had waiting for an hour.
They had been waiting for an hour.
You need 'been' between 'had' and the -ing verb: had + been + waiting.
I had been knowing him for years.
I had known him for years.
'Know' is a stative verb, so it takes the past perfect, not the continuous form.
Tips
- The form 'had been + verb-ing' is the same for every subject, so there is only one pattern to remember. — 'had been + verb-ing'
- Use it to show how long an action had continued before another past event or time.
- It usually pairs with the past simple: the continuous action was happening, then the past simple event interrupted or followed it.
