The past continuous tense (also called the past progressive) describes an action that was in progress at a moment in the past. It sets the scene — 'At 8 o'clock last night I was studying' — and often pairs with the past simple to show one action interrupting another.
Past continuous tense (past progressive নামেও পরিচিত) অতীতের কোনো মুহূর্তে চলমান কাজ বোঝায়। এটি পরিস্থিতির পটভূমি তৈরি করে — 'At 8 o'clock last night I was studying' — এবং প্রায়ই past simple-এর সাথে মিলে দেখায় এক কাজ আরেক কাজকে থামিয়ে দিচ্ছে।

The past continuous is formed with 'was' or 'were' plus the -ing form of the main verb: I was working, They were working.
Past continuous তৈরি হয় 'was' বা 'were'-এর সাথে মূল verb-এর -ing রূপ যোগ করে। যেমন — I was working, They were working।

গঠন: subject + was/were + verb-এর -ing রূপ। I / he / she / it-এর সাথে was বসে; we / you / they-এর সাথে were বসে। যেমন — I was reading, They were reading। এই tense বোঝায় অতীতের কোনো সময়ে কাজটি চলছিল। প্রায়ই 'when' ও 'while' দিয়ে দুটি কাজ যুক্ত হয়: চলমান কাজে past continuous, আর হঠাৎ ঘটা কাজে past simple — 'I was sleeping when the phone rang.' প্রশ্ন করতে was/were সামনে আনুন: 'Were you working?' না-বোধক করতে not বসান: 'She was not listening.'

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
They was playing football.
They were playing football.
With we/you/they use 'were', not 'was'.
I was study when he came.
I was studying when he came.
After was/were the main verb must take -ing (study → studying).
She were cooking dinner.
She was cooking dinner.
With he/she/it use 'was', not 'were'.
When the phone rang, I sleeping.
When the phone rang, I was sleeping.
The past continuous always needs 'was/were' before the -ing form.

- Use 'was' with I/he/she/it and 'were' with we/you/they. — I/he/she/it-এর সাথে 'was' আর we/you/they-এর সাথে 'were' বসান।
- For an interrupted action, use past continuous for the longer action and past simple for the sudden one. — একটি কাজ থেমে গেলে দীর্ঘ কাজে past continuous আর হঠাৎ ঘটা কাজে past simple ব্যবহার করুন।
- 'While' usually introduces the longer background action; 'when' usually introduces the short one. — 'while' সাধারণত দীর্ঘ পটভূমির কাজ বোঝায়; 'when' সাধারণত ছোট কাজটি বোঝায়।
- Follow the same -ing spelling rules as the present continuous: make → making, sit → sitting. — present continuous-এর মতোই -ing বানানের নিয়ম মানুন: make → making, sit → sitting।
