Gerunds and Infinitives
Gerunds and Infinitives (verb + ing এবং to + verb)
Introductionভূমিকা
“I look forward to hear from you.” That line closes thousands of Bangladeshi job applications every week and it has one word wrong: it should be hearing. The reason we all write hear is that Bangla gives us a single shape for a verb following another verb — the -তে ending, as in যেতে চাই, শুনতে চাই — and it never varies. English varies constantly, and the deciding factor is often not the meaning at all but the small word standing just before the blank.
“I look forward to hear from you.”
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A gerund is the -ing form of a verb doing the job of a noun — I like reading. An infinitive is to plus the base verb — I want to read. Some verbs only ever take one of the two, a few take both with the same meaning, and a small dangerous group takes both with different meanings.
Gerund হলো verb-এর -ing রূপ, যা noun-এর কাজ করে — I like reading। Infinitive হলো to + verb-এর মূল রূপ — I want to read। কিছু verb কেবল একটাই নেয়, কয়েকটা দুটোই নেয় একই অর্থে, আর ছোট একটা বিপজ্জনক দল দুটোই নেয় — কিন্তু অর্থ পাল্টে যায়।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
সবচেয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য নিয়মটা দিয়ে শুরু করি, কারণ এটা কোনো ব্যতিক্রম মানে না: **preposition-এর পরে সবসময় gerund**। good at swim**ming**, before eat**ing**, without ask**ing**, instead of go**ing**, interested in work**ing**, tired of wait**ing**। এই এক নিয়মেই বহু ভুল বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। আর এখান থেকেই আসে সেই বিখ্যাত ফাঁদ — 'look forward **to**'-এর to কিন্তু infinitive-এর to নয়, ওটা preposition। তাই তার পরে -ing বসবে: 'I look forward to **hearing** from you', 'I am used to **waking** up early', 'She is committed to **helping** them'। এবার তালিকা দুটো। **Gerund নেয়** এমন verb: enjoy, finish, avoid, mind, suggest, practise, keep, consider, admit, deny, risk, miss, imagine, postpone — 'I enjoy **reading**', 'He avoided **answering**'। **Infinitive নেয়** এমন verb: want, decide, hope, plan, need, promise, agree, expect, refuse, learn, offer, manage, would like — 'I want **to go**', 'She refused **to sign**'। এখানে অর্থ ধরে অনুমান করা যায় না, তাই verb-টার সাথে তার সঙ্গীটিকে জোড়া বেঁধে শিখুন, ঠিক যেভাবে preposition শেখেন। এবার সেই দলটা, যেখানে দুটোই বসে কিন্তু অর্থ বদলে যায় — খাতায় এখানেই সবচেয়ে চমকপ্রদ ভুল হয়। 'He stopped **smoking**' মানে সে ধূমপান ছেড়ে দিয়েছে; 'He stopped **to smoke**' মানে সে ধূমপান করার জন্য থামল। 'I remember **locking** the door' মানে তালা দিয়েছিলাম, সেটা মনে আছে; 'Remember **to lock** the door' মানে তালা দিতে ভুলো না। 'I tried **calling** him' মানে ফোন করে দেখলাম, কাজ হলো কি না; 'I tried **to call** him' মানে চেষ্টা করেছিলাম, পারিনি। 'She forgot **posting** the letter' আর 'She forgot **to post** the letter' — প্রথমটায় চিঠি গেছে, দ্বিতীয়টায় যায়নি। একই বাক্য, একটা ছোট রূপের বদলে দুটো আলাদা ঘটনা। আরও দুটো কাজের কথা। প্রথমত, বাক্যের শুরুতে কর্তা হিসেবে সাধারণত gerund বসে — '**Swimming** is good for health', '**Reading** newspapers improves vocabulary'; সেখানে 'To swim is good' লেখা যায় বটে, কিন্তু বইয়ের ভাষা শোনায়। দ্বিতীয়ত, উদ্দেশ্য বোঝাতে সবসময় infinitive — 'He went to Dhaka **to see** a doctor'; এখানে 'for seeing' লেখা যায় না, যদিও বাংলায় আমরা 'দেখানোর জন্য' বলি বলে for বসাতে ইচ্ছে করে। উদ্দেশ্যের জায়গায় for-এর পরে verb এলেই বুঝবেন কিছু একটা গোলমাল হয়েছে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I enjoy to play football.
I enjoy playing football.
'Enjoy' is always followed by a gerund (playing), never an infinitive.
She wants going home.
She wants to go home.
'Want' takes an infinitive (to go), not a gerund.
He is good at to cook.
He is good at cooking.
After a preposition ('at') you must use a gerund, not an infinitive.
To swim is good for health, so I swimming daily.
Swimming is good for health, so I swim daily.
As the subject, a gerund reads more naturally; and a main verb after a subject is not -ing without 'be'.
Tipsটিপস
- After a preposition (at, of, about, before), always use the -ing form. — preposition-এর (at, of, about, before) পরে সবসময় -ing রূপ বসান।
- Remember three infinitive verbs — want, decide, hope — and three gerund verbs — enjoy, finish, avoid. — তিনটি infinitive verb — want, decide, hope; আর তিনটি gerund verb — enjoy, finish, avoid মনে রাখুন।
- 'Stop + ing' means quit the action; 'stop + to' means pause in order to do something. — 'stop + ing' মানে কাজটি বন্ধ করা; 'stop + to' মানে কিছু করার জন্য থামা।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between a gerund and an infinitive?
A gerund is the verb + ing used like a noun (swimming), while an infinitive is 'to' + the base verb (to swim). Some verbs take one, some take the other.
How do I know which verbs take a gerund and which take an infinitive?
There is no single rule, so learn common lists: enjoy, finish, avoid, mind take gerunds; want, decide, hope, plan take infinitives. After a preposition, always use a gerund.
Do 'like' and 'start' take a gerund or an infinitive?
Verbs like 'like', 'love', 'hate', 'start' and 'begin' can take either form with almost no change in meaning: 'I like reading' and 'I like to read' are both correct.
