Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla has one word here and it never has to choose. কম ছাত্র, কম পানি, কম সময় — the same কম goes in front of anything. English keeps two words for the same job and expects you to sort the noun first. Curiously, English itself keeps only one word for the opposite direction: more students, more water. So the difficulty only exists on the way down, and that asymmetry is the reason the mistake survives even in careful writing.

বাংলায় এখানে একটাই শব্দ, আর তাকে কখনো বাছাই করতে হয় না। 'কম ছাত্র', 'কম পানি', 'কম সময়' — একই 'কম' যেকোনো কিছুর আগে বসে যায়। ইংরেজি একই কাজের জন্য দুটো শব্দ রেখে দিয়েছে, আর আশা করে আপনি আগে noun-টা বাছবেন। মজার ব্যাপার, উল্টো দিকে ইংরেজিরও একটাই শব্দ — more students, more water। অর্থাৎ ঝামেলাটা কেবল কমার দিকে, আর এই অসমতার কারণেই ভুলটা যত্ন করে লেখা ইংরেজিতেও টিকে থাকে।

Fewer goes with things you can count one by one — fewer students, fewer mistakes, fewer mangoes. Less goes with things you treat as a quantity rather than as separate items — less water, less time, less money.

Fewer বসে সেসব জিনিসের সাথে যা এক-একটা করে গোনা যায় — fewer students, fewer mistakes, fewer mangoes। Less বসে সেসবের সাথে যা আলাদা টুকরো নয়, একটা পরিমাণ হিসেবেই ভাবা হয় — less water, less time, less money।

সহজ পরীক্ষা: শব্দটার শেষে **-s** বসাতে পারলে **fewer**, না পারলে **less**। 'students' → fewer students ✅। 'water' → waters বলা যায় না → less water ✅। বেশিরভাগ বাক্যে এটুকুই যথেষ্ট, আর খাতায় সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে দু সেকেন্ডের বেশি লাগে না। এবার ব্যতিক্রমগুলো, কারণ নম্বর যায় ঠিক এখানেই। **টাকা, সময়, দূরত্ব আর ওজন** — শব্দগুলো গোনা যায় বলে মনে হলেও এরা less নেয়, কারণ এগুলোকে আমরা টুকরো নয়, পরিমাণ হিসেবে ভাবি। 'less than 500 taka' ✅ (fewer than 500 taka নয়), 'less than three hours', 'less than five kilometres', 'less than two kilos'। যুক্তিটা সোজা — ৫০০ টাকা মানে ৫০০টা আলাদা নোট নয়, একটা অঙ্ক; তিন ঘণ্টা মানে তিনটে আলাদা জিনিস নয়, একটা সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্য। একই কারণে শতাংশ ও পরিসংখ্যানেও less বসে — 'less than 40 percent'। মানুষের বেলায় কী হবে, সেটা আলাদা করে জেনে রাখা ভালো, কারণ এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি তর্ক হয়। ব্যাকরণের হিসেবে **fewer people** ঠিক, আর পরীক্ষার খাতায় বা আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখায় ওটাই লিখবেন। কথ্য ইংরেজিতে ইংরেজিভাষীরাও অহরহ 'less people' বলেন, এমনকি দোকানের সাইনবোর্ডেও '10 items or less' লেখা থাকে — কিন্তু সেটা কথ্য ছাড় মাত্র, নিয়ম নয়। প্রতিবেদন, দরখাস্ত বা উত্তরপত্রে fewer লিখলে কেউ প্রশ্ন তুলতে পারবে না। শেষ দুটো ছোট কথা। চরম রূপ দুটো আলাদা: less-এর **least**, fewer-এর **fewest** — 'the least money', 'the fewest mistakes'। আর একটা বাঁধা বাগধারায় less-ই বসে, যদিও সেখানে জিনিসটা গোনা যায়: 'one **less** thing to worry about'। বাগধারাটা এভাবেই জমে গেছে, তাই এটাকে নিয়মের ব্যতিক্রম হিসেবেই মনে রাখুন।

People can be counted, so it takes 'fewer'. This is the single most common version of this error.
I made fewer progress this month.
I made less progress this month.
'Progress' is uncountable — you cannot say 'progresses'.
The fare is fewer than 100 taka.
The fare is less than 100 taka.
Money is treated as a quantity, not a count, even though the number is countable.
He has fewer money than his brother.
He has less money than his brother.
'Money' itself is uncountable in English, however many notes are involved.

Money, time, distance and weight always take 'less', even with a number. — টাকা, সময়, দূরত্ব ও ওজন সবসময় 'less' নেয়, সংখ্যা থাকলেও।

Is 'less' with countable nouns really wrong?

In careful writing and exams, yes. In everyday speech native speakers say 'less people' constantly, and nobody misunderstands. Know the rule for the exam; do not be shocked when you hear it broken.

What about 'lesser'?

'Lesser' means smaller in importance, not in number — 'the lesser of two evils'. It is never a substitute for 'less' or 'fewer'.

Which do I use with percentages?

'Less than 20 per cent' — percentages behave like quantities. Same for fractions: 'less than half'.

Does this matter in IELTS Writing Task 1?

Yes, directly. Task 1 is full of comparisons, and 'fewer people' versus 'less water' comes up constantly. Getting it right is an easy accuracy mark.
