-ed and -ing Adjectives: Bored or Boring?
-ed ও -ing Adjective (bored না boring?)
Introductionভূমিকা
A student stands up in class and says, “Sir, I am boring.” The room laughs, and the student cannot work out why. He has just announced that he is the dull one in the room. Two letters at the end of a word carry the entire difference: the -ed form says what a person feels, the -ing form says what causes the feeling. The class was boring; the student was bored.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Both forms come from verbs of feeling. The -ing adjective describes whatever produces the feeling — the book, the journey, the news. The -ed adjective describes the person in whom the feeling lands. An interesting book, an interested reader; the same event, two sides of it.
দুটো রূপই আসে অনুভূতিবাচক verb থেকে। -ing রূপ বর্ণনা করে যে জিনিস, ঘটনা বা মানুষ অনুভূতিটা তৈরি করছে — বইটা, যাত্রাটা, খবরটা। আর -ed রূপ বর্ণনা করে সেই মানুষটাকে, যার ভেতরে অনুভূতিটা এসে পড়ে। An interesting book, an interested reader — একই ঘটনার দুই দিক।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
একটাই প্রশ্নে ঠিক রূপটা বেরিয়ে আসে: অনুভূতিটা কার ভেতরে হচ্ছে, আর কে সেটা তৈরি করছে? যার ভেতরে হচ্ছে তার জন্য **-ed**, যে তৈরি করছে তার জন্য **-ing**। 'The match was **exciting**, so the crowd was **excited**' — খেলাটা উত্তেজনা তৈরি করেছে, দর্শকের ভেতরে উত্তেজনা হয়েছে। চেনা জোড়াগুলো এক জায়গায় রাখুন: interesting/interested, boring/bored, tiring/tired, exciting/excited, confusing/confused, surprising/surprised, shocking/shocked, frightening/frightened, relaxing/relaxed, disappointing/disappointed, embarrassing/embarrassed, annoying/annoyed, satisfying/satisfied, amazing/amazed, worrying/worried। দ্রুত কাজ চালানোর নিয়ম: মানুষ প্রায় সবসময় **-ed** নেয় (I am tired, she was surprised), আর জিনিস বা ঘটনা প্রায় সবসময় **-ing** নেয় (the journey was tiring, the news was surprising)। ব্যতিক্রম কেবল তখনই, যখন মানুষটা নিজেই অন্যের মনে অনুভূতি তৈরি করছে — 'He is a **boring** teacher' মানে তাঁর ক্লাসে সবাই বিরক্ত হয়, 'She is an **interesting** speaker' মানে তাঁর কথা শুনতে ভালো লাগে। একটা লেখা-সংক্রান্ত ভুল আলাদা করে বলা দরকার, কারণ এটা দরখাস্ত আর কভার লেটারে বছরের পর বছর ঘুরছে: 'I am very much interested **to work** with your company'। রূপটা ঠিক আছে, কিন্তু গঠনটা নয় — interested-এর পরে **in** বসে, আর in-এর পরে verb থাকলে তাতে -ing লাগে: 'I am **interested in working** with your company'। এই এক লাইনেই বিদেশি নিয়োগকর্তার চোখে ধরা পড়ে যায় দরখাস্তটা কোন দেশ থেকে এসেছে। -ed রূপগুলোর সাথে preposition বাঁধা থাকে, আর সেগুলো আলাদা করে শিখে নিলে অনেক ভুল একসাথে বন্ধ হয়: interested **in**, bored **with**, tired **of**, excited **about**, worried **about**, frightened **of**, surprised **at**, annoyed **with** (মানুষের উপর), disappointed **with**, satisfied **with**। 'Interested about' বা 'annoyed on' বললে কথা বোঝা যায়, কিন্তু ইংরেজিটা ভুল হয়ে থাকে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I am very boring in this class.
I am very bored in this class.
'I am boring' says that you are the one making other people dull. The feeling you have takes the -ed form: bored.
The film was very interested.
The film was very interesting.
A film cannot feel anything. Whatever produces the feeling takes -ing, and only a person can be 'interested'.
I am interested about cricket.
I am interested in cricket.
Each -ed adjective has a fixed preposition, and 'interested' takes 'in'. Getting the adjective right and the preposition wrong still reads as an error.
The journey to Sylhet was very tired.
The journey to Sylhet was very tiring.
The journey caused the tiredness, so it is 'tiring'. The people on it were 'tired'.
She was very exciting to see her cousin.
She was very excited to see her cousin.
'Exciting' would describe her as the cause of other people's excitement. Here she is the one feeling it, so the -ed form is needed.
Tipsটিপস
- Ask one question: who feels it, and what causes it? The feeler takes -ed, the cause takes -ing. — একটাই প্রশ্ন করুন: কে অনুভব করছে, আর কে তৈরি করছে? যে অনুভব করছে -ed, যে তৈরি করছে -ing।
- Things and events almost always take -ing; people almost always take -ed — unless the person is the one causing the feeling. — জিনিস ও ঘটনা প্রায় সবসময় -ing নেয়, মানুষ প্রায় সবসময় -ed — শুধু মানুষটা নিজেই অনুভূতিটা তৈরি করলে আলাদা।
- Learn each -ed adjective with its preposition: interested in, tired of, excited about, worried about, frightened of. — প্রতিটি -ed adjective তার preposition সহ শিখুন: interested in, tired of, excited about, worried about, frightened of।
- If you are describing yourself and are unsure, -ed is the safer choice. People are usually the ones who feel. — নিজের কথা বলতে গিয়ে দ্বিধায় পড়লে -ed বেছে নিন — মানুষই সাধারণত অনুভব করে।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between bored and boring?
'Bored' is what a person feels, and 'boring' is what causes that feeling. 'I was bored in the class' describes you; 'The class was boring' describes the class.
Can a person be described with the -ing form?
Yes, when the person is the cause. 'He is boring' means people feel dull around him, and 'She is amazing' means she produces amazement in others. Say it only when you mean it.
Why do Bengali speakers mix these up?
Bangla keeps the two ideas in separate words — ক্লান্ত against ক্লান্তিকর — so the idea itself is familiar. The difficulty is that in English both words share a root and differ only in the ending, so the wrong ending slips out when you speak quickly.
Which prepositions follow these adjectives?
The common ones are interested in, bored with, tired of, excited about, worried about, frightened of, surprised at, annoyed with a person and disappointed with something. Learn the adjective and its preposition together.
