Introductionভূমিকা

You come back from the barber and say “I cut my hair.” Everyone understands you, and what you have actually said is that you picked up a pair of scissors and did it yourself. Bangla builds this idea into the verb — কাটা becomes কাটানো, পড়া becomes পড়ানো, one extra syllable and the meaning is done. English has no such ending. It builds a whole structure instead, and because our first language handles it invisibly, most of us never go looking for it.

নাপিতের দোকান থেকে ফিরে আপনি বলেন “I cut my hair.”

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

A causative structure says that you arranged the work and someone else did it. The main pattern is have or get, then the thing, then the past participle: I had my phone repaired. The doer usually disappears, because the point is that the job got done, not who did it.

Causative গঠন বোঝায় যে কাজটার ব্যবস্থা আপনি করেছেন, কিন্তু করেছে অন্য কেউ। মূল ছাঁচ: have বা get, তারপর জিনিসটা, তারপর past participle — I had my phone repaired। কে করল সেটা সাধারণত বলা হয় না, কারণ আসল কথা হলো কাজটা হয়েছে, কে করেছে সেটা নয়।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

চারটে verb এই কাজ চালায়, আর দুটো দলে ভাগ করে দেখলে গুলিয়ে যায় না। **দল ১ — জিনিসটার উপর কাজ করানো:** have বা get + জিনিস + V3 (past participle)। 'I had my car washed' মানে গাড়ি ধোয়ালাম, নিজে ধুইনি। 'I got my hair cut' মানে চুল কাটালাম। এই গঠনে কে করল তা বলার দরকার নেই, আর বেশিরভাগ সময় বলাও হয় না — নিউমার্কেটের কোন দোকানে ফোন সারানো হলো, সেটা কারও দরকার নেই। have আর get প্রায় সমার্থক; get একটু বেশি কথ্য, have একটু বেশি নিরপেক্ষ। **দল ২ — মানুষের উপর কাজ করানো:** make, let বা have + মানুষ + verb-এর মূল রূপ, মাঝে to ছাড়া। 'My father made me apologise' — জোর করে করানো। 'She let me use her laptop' — অনুমতি দেওয়া। 'I had the driver wait outside' — ব্যবস্থা করা, নিরপেক্ষ সুরে। এখানেই সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদটা: make, let আর have-এর পরে **to বসে না**, কিন্তু get-এর পরে মানুষ এলে **to বসে** — 'I **got** my brother **to help** me'। এই একটামাত্র ব্যতিক্রম মনে রাখলে অর্ধেক ভুল বন্ধ। একটা তৃতীয় ব্যবহারও আছে, যেটা বইয়ে কম আসে অথচ কথায় প্রায়ই লাগে: খারাপ কিছু ঘটে যাওয়া বোঝাতেও এই গঠনটাই বসে, যদিও সেখানে আপনি কিছুই ব্যবস্থা করেননি। 'He **had** his phone **stolen** on the bus' — ফোন চুরি হয়ে গেছে। 'She **had** her bag **snatched** near the footbridge'। গঠন একই, সুর আলাদা; প্রসঙ্গ থেকেই বোঝা যায় এটা ব্যবস্থা নয়, দুর্ঘটনা। কখন কোনটা লিখবেন, সেই সিদ্ধান্তটা সহজ করে নিন। কাজটা যদি আপনি নিজে করে থাকেন, সাধারণ verb — 'I washed my car'। কাজটা যদি টাকা দিয়ে বা বলে-কয়ে অন্যকে দিয়ে করিয়ে থাকেন, causative — 'I had my car washed'। বাংলা বাক্যে যদি 'করালাম', 'বানালাম', 'সারালাম', 'কাটালাম' — এই -আনো রূপটা থাকে, ধরে নিন ইংরেজিতে causative গঠন লাগবে। এটাই সবচেয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য সংকেত, কারণ বাংলা নিজেই আপনাকে বলে দিচ্ছে কাজটা আপনি করেননি।

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • I had my phone repaired at New Market.নিউমার্কেটে ফোনটা সারিয়েছি। (নিজে সারাইনি — have + জিনিস + V3)
  • She got her documents translated before the visa interview.ভিসা ইন্টারভিউয়ের আগে কাগজপত্র অনুবাদ করিয়েছিল।
  • We're having the house painted next month.আগামী মাসে বাড়িটা রং করাচ্ছি।
  • My mother made me finish my homework before dinner.মা আমাকে রাতের খাবারের আগে হোমওয়ার্ক শেষ করালেন। (make + মানুষ + base verb)
  • The teacher let us leave early.শিক্ষক আমাদের আগে ছুটি দিলেন। (let + মানুষ + base verb)
  • I got my brother to pick up the parcel.ভাইকে দিয়ে পার্সেলটা আনালাম। (get + মানুষ + **to** + verb)
  • He had the shop deliver it to his office.দোকানকে দিয়ে অফিসে পৌঁছে দেওয়ালেন। (have + মানুষ + base verb)

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Yesterday I cut my hair at the salon.

Yesterday I had my hair cut at the salon.

Without the causative, this says you cut it yourself. Small change, completely different meaning.

  • My father made me to apologise.

    My father made me apologise.

After make, let and have with a person, the verb takes no 'to'.

  • I got my brother help me.

I got my brother to help me.

'Get' is the exception — with a person it does need 'to'.

  • I have repaired my watch last week. (meaning: the shop repaired it)

I had my watch repaired last week.

'I have repaired' means you did the repairing. The past participle must come after the object.

Tipsটিপস

  • Remember the shape: have/get + THING + past participle. The participle always comes last. গঠনটা মনে রাখুন: have/get + জিনিস + past participle। Participle সবসময় শেষে।
  • make = force, let = allow, have = arrange, get = persuade. That is the whole difference. make = জোর করা, let = অনুমতি দেওয়া, have = ব্যবস্থা করা, get = রাজি করানো। পার্থক্য এটুকুই।
  • Only 'get' takes 'to' before a person's verb. The other three do not. মানুষের ক্রিয়ার আগে শুধু 'get'-এ 'to' বসে। বাকি তিনটায় বসে না।
  • This structure appears constantly in IELTS Speaking Part 1 — repairs, haircuts, deliveries, documents. IELTS Speaking Part 1-এ এই গঠন বারবার আসে — মেরামত, চুল কাটা, ডেলিভারি, কাগজপত্র।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

What is the difference between 'have something done' and 'get something done'?

Very little. 'Get' is slightly more informal and can suggest effort or persuasion was involved. In everyday speech they are interchangeable.

Can the causative be used for bad things that happened to you?

Yes, and this is a common use: 'I had my phone stolen on the bus.' You did not arrange it — here the structure just means something was done to your thing.

Is 'help' followed by 'to'?

Both are correct: 'He helped me carry it' and 'He helped me to carry it'. 'Help' is unusually flexible — the other causatives are not.

Why does this matter for IELTS?

It is one of the structures examiners look for as evidence of range. Using it correctly two or three times in Speaking or Writing is a genuine signal above band 6.
