Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla gives you আনা and নেওয়া, and nearly everyone lines them up with bring and take and moves on. The mapping holds about half the time. The other half slips past unnoticed for years, because nobody stops a conversation to correct a verb that was understood anyway — and because in English the right verb depends on where the speaker is standing, not on what is being carried.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Bring means to carry something towards the place where the speaker or the listener is. Take means to carry it away from there. The object is irrelevant; the position of the two people talking decides everything.

Bring মানে বক্তা বা শ্রোতা যেখানে আছেন, সেদিকে বয়ে আনা। Take মানে সেখান থেকে বয়ে সরিয়ে নেওয়া। জিনিসটা কী, তাতে কিছু আসে যায় না; যারা কথা বলছে তারা কোথায় আছে — সেটাই সব ঠিক করে দেয়।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

একটাই প্রশ্নে সব মিটে যায়: **জিনিসটা কি আমার দিকে আসছে, নাকি আমার থেকে যাচ্ছে?** আসলে bring, গেলে take। আপনি বাড়িতে বসে বন্ধুকে ফোনে বলছেন 'Bring your laptop' — জিনিসটা আপনার দিকে আসবে। আপনি বেরোচ্ছেন, তাই বলছেন 'I'll take my umbrella' — ওটা আপনার সাথে চলে যাবে। মজার ব্যাপার, একই ঘটনায় দুজনের মুখে দুই verb বসে: বন্ধু বলবে 'I'm **taking** my laptop to your house', আর আপনি বলবেন 'He's **bringing** his laptop here'। কেউ ভুল বলছে না, দুজন দুই জায়গায় দাঁড়িয়ে আছে বলেই এই তফাত। শ্রোতার অবস্থানও গোনায় ধরতে হয়, আর এই জায়গাটাই বইয়ে সাধারণত বাদ পড়ে যায়। ফোনে কাউকে বলছেন 'I'll **bring** the file to your office' — আপনি অফিসে নেই, তবু bring, কারণ ফাইলটা শ্রোতার দিকে যাচ্ছে। মনে রাখার সহজ জোড়া: **bring চলে come-এর সাথে, take চলে go-এর সাথে**। যেখানে come বসত, সেখানে bring; যেখানে go বসত, সেখানে take। 'Come to my house and bring your brother' — একই দিক। 'Go to the office and take these papers' — একই দিক। রূপ দুটো অনিয়মিত, আর খাতায় এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি নম্বর যায়: bring – **brought** – brought, take – **took** – **taken**। 'bringed' বা 'taked' বলে কিছু নেই, আর 'have took' নয়, 'have **taken**'। এবার সেই ভুলটা, যেটা এ দেশে সবচেয়ে বেশি বলা হয় এবং প্রায় কেউ ধরিয়ে দেয় না। বাংলায় আমরা বলি 'পরীক্ষা দেওয়া', তাই ইংরেজিতে বেরিয়ে আসে 'I will **give** the exam tomorrow'। ইংরেজিতে exam **give** করেন শিক্ষক বা বোর্ড — তাঁরা প্রশ্ন দেন। শিক্ষার্থী exam **take** করে, বা sit for করে: 'I will **take** the exam tomorrow', 'She **sat for** her HSC exam last year'। বিদেশি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আবেদন বা ইন্টারভিউতে এই একটা শব্দের ভুল সাথে সাথে কানে লাগে। একই ছাঁচে আরও কয়েকটা বাঁধা জোড়া মনে রাখুন: take a photo (তোলা), take a bath, take medicine, take a rickshaw, take notes — এদের কোনোটাতেই bring বা give বসে না। আর 'bring a photo' মানে ছবিটা হাতে করে নিয়ে আসা, ছবি তোলা নয়।

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • Please bring your certificates when you come for the interview.ইন্টারভিউতে আসার সময় সার্টিফিকেটগুলো নিয়ে আসবেন। (আমাদের দিকে আসছে — bring)
  • I'm taking my certificates to the interview tomorrow.কাল ইন্টারভিউতে সার্টিফিকেটগুলো নিয়ে যাচ্ছি। (আমার থেকে যাচ্ছে — take)
  • Can you bring me a glass of water?আমাকে এক গ্লাস পানি এনে দেবেন? (আমার দিকে)
  • Take these plates to the kitchen.এই প্লেটগুলো রান্নাঘরে নিয়ে যাও। (এখান থেকে ওখানে)
  • He brought his whole family to the wedding.সে পুরো পরিবার নিয়ে বিয়েতে এসেছিল। (brought — brang নয়)
  • She took her son to the doctor yesterday.গতকাল সে ছেলেকে ডাক্তারের কাছে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল।
  • I'll bring the documents to your office in the morning.সকালে কাগজগুলো আপনার অফিসে নিয়ে আসব। (শ্রোতার দিকে যাচ্ছে বলে bring)

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I will bring my umbrella when I go out.

I will take my umbrella when I go out.

The umbrella leaves with you, away from here — so it is 'take'.

  • Don't forget to take your CV when you come to our office.

Don't forget to bring your CV when you come to our office.

From the office's point of view, the CV is arriving — so 'bring'.

  • He brang the food.

    He brought the food.

Bring – brought – brought. 'Brang' and 'bringed' are not English words.

  • Can you bring a photo of the building?

Can you take a photo of the building?

Photographing is 'take a photo'. 'Bring a photo' means carry an existing one here.

Tipsটিপস

  • Ask one question: is it coming here or going there? Coming = bring, going = take. একটাই প্রশ্ন করুন: এটা এদিকে আসছে না ওদিকে যাচ্ছে? আসছে = bring, যাচ্ছে = take।
  • In invitations, always 'bring': 'Bring your friends', 'Bring a dish'. নিমন্ত্রণে সবসময় 'bring': 'Bring your friends', 'Bring a dish'।
  • When leaving home, it is 'take': take your keys, take an umbrella, take your ID. বাড়ি থেকে বেরোনোর সময় 'take': take your keys, take an umbrella, take your ID।
  • Memorise: brought and took. These two irregular forms cause more errors than the rule itself. মুখস্থ করুন: brought আর took। নিয়মের চেয়ে এই দুটো অনিয়মিত রূপেই বেশি ভুল হয়।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

Does the rule change on the phone?

Yes, and this trips people up. On a call you can use 'bring' for movement towards the listener too: 'I'll bring it to your shop.' The rule is towards the speaker or the listener.

What about 'come' and 'go'?

They follow exactly the same logic — come is towards, go is away. If you can choose between come and go correctly, you can choose between bring and take.

Is 'take away' the same as 'take'?

'Takeaway' as a noun means food you carry out of a restaurant. As a phrasal verb, 'take away' means remove — a separate meaning from the direction rule here.

Do native speakers always get this right?

Mostly, though in casual speech they sometimes use 'bring' loosely where 'take' is technically correct. For exams and formal writing, stick to the direction rule.
