'Can you borrow me 500 taka?' is asking your friend to take money from you — the opposite of what you meant. Bangla uses ধার for both directions, so English splitting it into two verbs catches almost everyone.
'Can you borrow me 500 taka?' — এর মানে দাঁড়ায় আপনি বন্ধুকে বলছেন আপনার থেকে টাকা নিতে, যা আপনি বলতে চাননি। বাংলায় দুই দিকেই 'ধার', তাই ইংরেজিতে দুটো আলাদা ক্রিয়া প্রায় সবাইকে বিভ্রান্ত করে।

'Borrow' means to take something temporarily from someone. 'Lend' means to give something temporarily to someone. Borrow comes towards you; lend goes away from you.
'Borrow' মানে কারো কাছ থেকে সাময়িকভাবে নেওয়া। 'Lend' মানে কাউকে সাময়িকভাবে দেওয়া। Borrow আসে আপনার দিকে; lend যায় আপনার থেকে।

Can you lend me your pen?
You want the pen to come to you, so the other person must lend. 'Borrow me' does not exist in English.
I lent a book from the library.
I borrowed a book from the library.
The book came to you, so it is 'borrow'. 'From' is the clue — lend never takes 'from'.
He lended me his bike.
He lent me his bike.
'Lend' is irregular: lend – lent – lent. There is no 'lended'.
I borrowed him my notes.
I lent him my notes.
The notes went away from you, so it is 'lend'.

- If the sentence has 'from', the verb is almost always 'borrow'. — বাক্যে 'from' থাকলে ক্রিয়াটা প্রায় সবসময়ই 'borrow'।
- When asking for something, you nearly always want 'Can you lend me…'. — কিছু চাইতে গেলে প্রায় সবসময় লাগবে 'Can you lend me…'।

Why is this so hard for Bangla speakers?
Because Bangla uses ধার for both directions and lets context decide. English forces you to choose the direction inside the verb itself, which is a habit you have to build rather than a rule you have to know.
Can I use 'give' instead of 'lend'?
Only if you are not getting it back. 'Give' is permanent; 'lend' means it comes back. Saying 'give me 500 taka' to a friend means something quite different.
What about 'loan'?
'Loan' is mainly a noun — 'a bank loan'. As a verb it means the same as lend and is common in American English, but 'lend' is safer in Bangladesh and in exams.
Is 'borrow' ever followed by 'to'?
No. Borrow takes 'from' and lend takes 'to'. If you have written 'borrow to', the verb is wrong.
