Model Composition (316 words)
Science is systematic knowledge of the natural world, and modern science is what that knowledge has become in the last two centuries. Its wonders are so ordinary now that we forget they were wonders at all. Consider medicine first, because it has saved the most lives. Diseases that emptied villages a hundred years ago — smallpox, cholera, tetanus — are now prevented by vaccines costing a few taka. Antibiotics cure infections that were once a death sentence. A surgeon can open a heart, replace a valve and close it again, and a machine can photograph the inside of a living body without cutting it. A child born in Bangladesh today can expect to live far longer than her grandmother could. Communication has changed just as completely. A message that took a month by ship now takes a second. A worker in Saudi Arabia sees his mother's face while he speaks to her, and a farmer in Rangpur checks tomorrow's rainfall on a phone that costs less than a goat. Transport has shrunk the world. We travel in hours where our great-grandparents travelled in weeks, and cargo moves between continents on a schedule. Agriculture is the quiet wonder. Improved seed, irrigation pumps and fertiliser are the reason this small and crowded country now grows most of its own rice, which nobody in 1971 would have predicted. But science gives power without instructions for using it. The same knowledge that built a hospital scanner built the bomb; the industry that clothes us also poisons our rivers; and the phone that connects a family also carries the rumour that burns a neighbourhood. Science is a tool of enormous strength, and a tool answers to the hand holding it. The wonders are real and worth being grateful for. What they ask of us is judgement — that we decide what is worth building before we discover we can build it.

Modern science has produced wonders so ordinary that we forget they were wonders. Medicine has saved the most lives: diseases that once emptied villages are prevented by cheap vaccines, and a surgeon can open a heart and close it again. Communication has changed just as completely — a message that took a month now takes a second. Transport has shrunk the world, and improved seed and irrigation are why this crowded country grows most of its own rice. But science gives power without instructions for using it, and a tool answers to the hand holding it.

Writing the whole composition as one long paragraph.
Breaking it into an introduction, four or five body paragraphs and a conclusion.
Compositions carry marks for organisation, and an unbroken block loses them before a single sentence is read.
Science is a great blessing of the modern age and it has done many things.
Vaccines costing a few taka now prevent diseases that once emptied villages.
A concrete example is worth a page of praise, and examiners have read the praise version many times.
Listing inventions without saying what changed.
Naming the invention and the change it made to an ordinary life.
A list of names shows memory; a described change shows understanding.
Ending with 'Science is both a blessing and a curse.'
Ending with the responsibility that power creates.
The blessing-curse formula appears in almost every script and closes the essay with a cliché.
- How long should a composition be?
- About 300 to 400 words for SSC and a little more for HSC. Organisation matters more than length, so five clear paragraphs beat eight rambling ones.
- Should I write an outline first?
- Yes, in two minutes on rough paper — five headings. Compositions that lose direction halfway are almost always the ones written without a plan.
- How is this different from the paragraph on science?
- The paragraph is one block of about 200 words. A composition needs separate paragraphs, an introduction and a conclusion, and room for more than one field.
