Students and Social Service Composition

Social service means work done for the good of the community without payment. Students are the natural people to do it, because they have energy, numbers, free hours between terms, and no vested interest in leaving things as they are. The most useful service they can give is teaching. A student who spends two evenings a week teaching the children of his own neighbourhood to read is doing something no government project has managed to do at that cost. Adult literacy classes work the same way. Health is the second field. Students can organise blood-donor lists by group, help at vaccination camps, and carry simple messages that save lives — wash hands with soap, drink boiled water, empty standing water where mosquitoes breed, take a snakebite victim to a hospital rather than an ojha. Disaster relief is the third and the one Bangladeshi students already do best. In every flood and cyclone of the last decade, student groups have collected money, packed relief, distributed it and, importantly, published the accounts. They can also clean and repair: canals cleared of polythene, walls painted, a school ground levelled, trees planted along a road and watered afterwards, which is the part that usually fails. Social service is not only a gift to others. A student who has organised anything learns planning, persuasion, accounts and how to work with people he did not choose — none of which is taught in class and all of which employers look for. Two cautions are worth stating. Service must not be an excuse for missing studies, and it must not become a queue for photographs. Work that nobody photographed is still work. A country of this size cannot pay for everything it needs. What its students give freely will always be part of the difference.

সমাজসেবা মানে বিনা পারিশ্রমিকে সমাজের কল্যাণে কাজ করা। এই কাজের জন্য স্বাভাবিক মানুষ শিক্ষার্থীরাই — কারণ তাঁদের আছে শক্তি, সংখ্যা, পর্বের মাঝের অবসর, আর সবকিছু যেমন আছে তেমন রেখে দেওয়ার কোনো স্বার্থ নেই। সবচেয়ে কাজের সেবা হলো পড়ানো: সপ্তাহে দুই সন্ধ্যা নিজের পাড়ার শিশুদের পড়তে শেখানো এমন একটা কাজ, যা এত কম খরচে কোনো সরকারি প্রকল্প পারেনি। দ্বিতীয় ক্ষেত্র স্বাস্থ্য — গ্রুপ অনুযায়ী রক্তদাতার তালিকা, টিকাদান শিবিরে সহায়তা, আর প্রাণরক্ষাকারী সহজ বার্তা পৌঁছে দেওয়া। তৃতীয় ক্ষেত্র দুর্যোগে ত্রাণ, আর এ কাজটাই বাংলাদেশের শিক্ষার্থীরা ইতিমধ্যে সবচেয়ে ভালো করেন।

কাঠামো: (১) সংজ্ঞা ও **কেন শিক্ষার্থীরাই উপযুক্ত** — শক্তি, সংখ্যা, অবসর, স্বার্থহীনতা; (২) শিক্ষা; (৩) স্বাস্থ্য; (৪) দুর্যোগে ত্রাণ; (৫) পরিচ্ছন্নতা ও মেরামত; (৬) **শিক্ষার্থী নিজে কী পান** — পরিকল্পনা, হিসাব, দলগত কাজ; এই অংশটা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না, অথচ এটাই সবচেয়ে বিশ্বাসযোগ্য যুক্তি; (৭) দুটো সতর্কতা — পড়াশোনার অজুহাত নয়, আর ছবি তোলার প্রতিযোগিতা নয়; (৮) উপসংহার। ত্রাণের অংশে 'হিসাব প্রকাশ করা' কথাটা রাখুন — এটা নির্দিষ্ট, সৎ, আর দেখায় আপনি বাস্তবটা জানেন।
