The book I read most recently is 'Aguner Poroshmoni' by Humayun Ahmed. I borrowed it from my school library in the winter holidays and finished it in two days, which has never happened to me with a book that was not a story of adventure. It is a novel set in Dhaka in 1971, during the nine months of the Liberation War. The story follows an ordinary middle-class family — a father who wants only to keep his daughters safe, two sisters, and a young freedom fighter named Bodiul Alam who takes shelter in their house. Nothing about the family is heroic at the beginning. The father argues that this is not their war. What the book does, and does very quietly, is show how an ordinary household is drawn into something it never chose. The war is not described through battles. It arrives as a knock at the door, a curfew, a neighbour who does not come back, a decision about whether to hide a stranger. I liked two things in particular. The language is simple enough that I never needed a dictionary, which is rare in a serious novel. And the characters behave like people I know — they are frightened, they make excuses, and they are brave in small ways rather than large ones. The ending upset me, and I think it was meant to. I closed the book and sat without doing anything for a while, which no textbook has ever made me do. Before this I thought of 1971 as a chapter with dates in it. This novel gave me the year as something people lived through in their own houses. That is what a good book does — it takes something you already knew and makes you feel it for the first time.

সম্প্রতি আমি পড়েছি হুমায়ূন আহমেদের 'আগুনের পরশমণি'। শীতের ছুটিতে স্কুলের লাইব্রেরি থেকে নিয়ে দুই দিনে শেষ করেছি — অ্যাডভেঞ্চারের গল্প নয় এমন কোনো বইয়ে আমার এমনটা আগে হয়নি। এটি ১৯৭১ সালের ঢাকার প্রেক্ষাপটে লেখা উপন্যাস, মুক্তিযুদ্ধের নয় মাসের সময়কার। গল্পটি এক সাধারণ মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারকে ঘিরে — এক বাবা, যিনি কেবল মেয়েদের নিরাপদে রাখতে চান, দুই বোন, আর বদিউল আলম নামে এক তরুণ মুক্তিযোদ্ধা যিনি তাঁদের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেন। শুরুতে পরিবারটির কিছুই বীরত্বপূর্ণ নয়; বাবা যুক্তি দেন, এটা তাঁদের যুদ্ধ নয়। বইটি খুব নিঃশব্দে দেখায়, কীভাবে একটি সাধারণ ঘর এমন কিছুতে জড়িয়ে পড়ে যা সে কখনো বেছে নেয়নি। যুদ্ধ এখানে যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রের বর্ণনায় আসে না — আসে দরজায় কড়া নাড়ায়, কারফিউতে, ফিরে না আসা প্রতিবেশীর মধ্য দিয়ে।

এই রচনায় সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ হলো **পুরো কাহিনি লিখে ফেলা**। পরীক্ষক গল্প জানতে চান না, আপনার প্রতিক্রিয়া জানতে চান। কাঠামো: (১) কোন বই, কার লেখা, কীভাবে পেলেন; (২) কী নিয়ে — **তিন-চার বাক্যে**, শেষটা ফাঁস না করে; (৩) **বইটি কীভাবে কাজ করে** — এখানেই আসল নম্বর; (৪) **কী ভালো লেগেছে ও কেন** — অন্তত দুটো নির্দিষ্ট কারণ, যেমন ভাষা সহজ, চরিত্রগুলো বাস্তব; (৫) কোন অংশ মনে গেঁথেছে; (৬) **আপনার কী বদলেছে**। ষষ্ঠ অংশটাই রচনাটাকে বইয়ের সারাংশ থেকে পাঠকের অভিজ্ঞতায় তোলে। বাংলা বই বাছলে অসুবিধা নেই — নামটা ইংরেজি হরফে লিখুন আর লেখকের নাম দিন।
