Model Composition (281 words)
Last Ramadan our family travelled from Dhaka to Barishal by launch, and although I have made the journey by bus since, I would take the launch again. We reached Sadarghat at four in the afternoon for a launch that left at seven. The terminal is worth arriving early for. Ten or twelve launches stood side by side, each with its name painted in enormous letters, and hawkers moved along the gangways selling jhalmuri, boiled eggs, water and cheap plastic toys. My father had booked a cabin, so we did not have to fight for deck space, but I spent most of the journey on the deck anyway. The launch pulled out exactly at seven with three long blasts of its horn. Dhaka slid away behind us — first the tanneries and warehouses, then brick fields with their tall chimneys, and then nothing but water and a low black line of trees. Dinner was rice, fish and dal, eaten sitting on the floor of the cabin. Afterwards I went up to the front deck. The night was cold on the river and the engine made the whole boat tremble under my feet. Small fishing boats showed a single lamp each. Twice we passed another launch going the opposite way, lit from end to end like a moving building. I woke at half past four when the engine changed its note, and we reached Barishal at five in a mist so thick that the ghat appeared only when we were nearly touching it. A bus would have taken half the time. But a bus gives you a road, and this gave me a night on a river, and I have not forgotten it.

Switching to the present tense in the middle of the narrative.
Keeping the whole account in the past.
A finished journey is told in the past, and a tense slip is the first thing an examiner notices in a narrative.
The scenery of the river was beyond description.
Small fishing boats showed a single lamp each.
Saying it cannot be described is a way of avoiding the description the question wants.
We reached at Barishal at 5 am.
We reached Barishal at five in the morning.
'Reach' takes no preposition before its object.
Writing only about the boat and nothing about the terminal or the arrival.
Giving the terminal, the departure, the night and the arrival their own paragraphs.
A journey composition is judged on shape, and the beginning and end carry as much as the middle.
- Which route should I choose?
- Dhaka to Barishal or Dhaka to Chandpur. Both are real overnight launch routes, so your details will stay plausible.
- How is this different from 'A Journey by Boat'?
- A country boat is small, quiet and short. A launch is a large vessel with decks, cabins and a terminal, so the detail and the vocabulary are different.
- Should I mention safety?
- One clause if you wish — overcrowding is real on this route. Do not turn a narrative into an editorial, though.
