The Value of Education Composition

Education is not the same as schooling, and the difference is the whole subject. Schooling is attendance and certificates; education is what a person can do and understand afterwards. A country can have a great deal of the first and very little of the second. Its most obvious value is economic. An educated person earns more, and the gap widens over a lifetime. A girl who finishes secondary school marries later, has fewer and healthier children, and is far more likely to keep her own daughters in school — which is why educating one girl changes two generations rather than one. Its second value is protection. An educated person can read a contract before signing it, understand a prescription, recognise a fraudulent job offer, and check a rumour before repeating it. Illiteracy is not only a lack; it is an exposure. The third value is the one hardest to measure. Education teaches a person to hold an idea he disagrees with long enough to examine it, to ask for evidence, and to change his mind without feeling defeated. A society with that habit argues instead of fighting. Bangladesh has done well on access. Almost every child now starts school, and girls outnumber boys in many secondary schools, which few of our neighbours can say. What we have not solved is quality. Too much teaching is memorisation, guidebooks have replaced the original texts, coaching has become a second and unequal school, and a student can pass an examination without being able to use what he passed in. So the work ahead is not to persuade parents to send children to school; that argument has been won. It is to make sure that what happens after they arrive is worth the years it takes.

শিক্ষা আর স্কুলে যাওয়া এক জিনিস নয়, আর এই পার্থক্যটাই পুরো বিষয়। স্কুলে যাওয়া মানে উপস্থিতি ও সনদ; শিক্ষা মানে তারপর মানুষটি কী পারে ও কী বোঝে। একটি দেশে প্রথমটি প্রচুর থাকতে পারে, দ্বিতীয়টি সামান্য। সবচেয়ে স্পষ্ট মূল্য অর্থনৈতিক: শিক্ষিত মানুষ বেশি আয় করেন, আর জীবনভর ব্যবধানটা বাড়তেই থাকে। যে মেয়ে মাধ্যমিক শেষ করে, তার বিয়ে হয় দেরিতে, সন্তান কম ও সুস্থ হয়, আর নিজের মেয়েদের স্কুলে রাখার সম্ভাবনা অনেক বেশি — সেজন্যই একটি মেয়েকে শিক্ষিত করা এক প্রজন্ম নয়, দুই প্রজন্ম বদলায়। দ্বিতীয় মূল্য সুরক্ষা: শিক্ষিত মানুষ সই করার আগে চুক্তি পড়তে পারেন, ব্যবস্থাপত্র বুঝতে পারেন, ভুয়া চাকরির প্রস্তাব চিনতে পারেন, গুজব ছড়ানোর আগে যাচাই করতে পারেন।

এই বিষয়ে বেশিরভাগ রচনা 'শিক্ষা জাতির মেরুদণ্ড' দিয়ে শুরু করে আর সেখানেই আটকে থাকে। **প্রথম বাক্যে একটা পার্থক্য টানুন**: শিক্ষা আর স্কুলে যাওয়া এক নয়। এতেই রচনাটার একটা যুক্তি দাঁড়িয়ে যায়। কাঠামো: (১) পার্থক্য; (২) **অর্থনৈতিক মূল্য** — এখানে মেয়েশিক্ষার দুই-প্রজন্ম যুক্তিটা রাখুন; (৩) **সুরক্ষা** — চুক্তি, ব্যবস্থাপত্র, ভুয়া চাকরি, গুজব; এই যুক্তিটা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না; (৪) চিন্তার অভ্যাস; (৫) **বাংলাদেশের বাস্তবতা** — সুযোগে সাফল্য, মানে ঘাটতি; (৬) উপসংহার। শেষ কথাটা রাখুন: **বাচ্চাদের স্কুলে পাঠানোর তর্ক জেতা হয়ে গেছে; এখন কাজ হলো স্কুলে পৌঁছানোর পর যা ঘটে সেটাকে সময়ের যোগ্য করা।**
