The Season I Like Most Composition

Bangladesh has six seasons, and each has something the others do not. Of them all I like winter best, and not only for the weather. Winter covers Poush and Magh, roughly December and January. The air turns dry and still. Mornings begin in a mist so thick that the next house disappears, and the sun does not properly arrive until nine. There is dew on the grass, smoke rising from small fires by the road, and old men sitting with shawls pulled up to their ears. By afternoon the sky is a clean, hard blue with no cloud in it at all, which happens in no other season here. The first reason I like it is the food. Date juice is collected from the trees before dawn and drunk while it is still cold. Villages make pitha through the whole month — bhapa, chitoi, patishapta — and the smell of steaming rice flour is the smell of winter to me. Vegetables are at their best and cheapest, and oranges appear in the market. The second reason is that winter makes work possible. In the heat of Baishakh nobody can study after noon; in winter one can read all day without a fan and sleep without waking. Weddings, picnics, sports days and village fairs all belong to this season for the same reason. Winter is not kind to everybody, and an honest answer says so. Cold waves kill the elderly and the poor every year, blankets never reach all the people who need them, and a day labourer standing in the mist at dawn does not enjoy it the way I do. Fog stops ferries and delays flights. Still, if I could keep one season it would be this one — for the pitha, for the blue afternoons, and for the fact that it is the only time of year in this country when nothing is too hot to do.

বাংলাদেশে ছয়টি ঋতু, আর প্রত্যেকটিতেই এমন কিছু আছে যা অন্যগুলোতে নেই। সব মিলিয়ে আমার সবচেয়ে ভালো লাগে শীত — শুধু আবহাওয়ার জন্য নয়। শীত পৌষ ও মাঘ জুড়ে, মোটামুটি ডিসেম্বর-জানুয়ারি। বাতাস শুকনো ও স্থির হয়ে আসে। সকাল শুরু হয় এমন ঘন কুয়াশায় যে পাশের বাড়িটাও মিলিয়ে যায়, আর নয়টার আগে সূর্য ঠিকমতো ওঠেই না। ঘাসে শিশির, রাস্তার পাশে ছোট আগুনের ধোঁয়া, কানে চাদর টেনে বসে থাকা বৃদ্ধরা। বিকেলে আকাশ হয়ে ওঠে পরিষ্কার কড়া নীল — যা এ দেশের আর কোনো ঋতুতে হয় না। প্রথম কারণ খাবার: ভোরের আগে সংগ্রহ করা খেজুরের রস, আর মাসজুড়ে পিঠা। তবে শীত সবার প্রতি সদয় নয় — প্রতিবছর শৈত্যপ্রবাহে বৃদ্ধ ও গরিব মানুষ মারা যান।

এই রচনায় সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ হলো **ছয় ঋতুর বর্ণনা লিখে ফেলা**। প্রশ্ন ছয়টি নয়, **একটি** ঋতু চেয়েছে। কাঠামো: (১) সূচনা — ছয় ঋতুর উল্লেখ এক বাক্যে, তারপর আপনার পছন্দ; (২) কোন মাস ও আবহাওয়া; (৩) **দৃশ্য** — কুয়াশা, শিশির, নীল আকাশ; (৪) **প্রথম কারণ** — খাবার, নির্দিষ্ট নামসহ; (৫) **দ্বিতীয় কারণ** — কাজ ও পড়াশোনা সম্ভব হয়; (৬) **সৎ দিক** — শৈত্যপ্রবাহে গরিবের কষ্ট; (৭) উপসংহার। ষষ্ঠ অংশটাই রচনাটাকে আলাদা করে: যে ঋতু আপনার প্রিয়, সেটাই কারও জন্য কঠিন — এই স্বীকারোক্তি পরিণত মনে হয়। শীত বাছলে বর্ণনার উপাদান সবচেয়ে বেশি পাবেন।
