Childhood is the part of a life a person remembers least accurately and most fondly. Mine was spent in a village in Tangail, in my grandfather's house, and I did not know at the time that it was ending. The house had a wide yard with a jackfruit tree at one end and a pond behind it. I woke to the sound of my grandmother grinding spices and the crows on the tin roof. Nobody hurried anybody. I was sent to a primary school ten minutes' walk away, and the walk mattered more than the school: there were fields to cut across, a culvert to jump from, and a dog we were all afraid of. Afternoons belonged to us. We swam in the pond until our eyes turned red, climbed for green mangoes and ate them with salt and chilli, flew kites from the field behind the house, and played danguli and gollachut until it was too dark to see. In the rainy season we caught small fish in the flooded paddy with a gamchha, and once I fell in and lied about it. Evenings were quieter. We studied by the light of a hurricane lamp when the electricity failed, and afterwards my grandmother told stories — of the war, of a flood in her own childhood, of ghosts by the bamboo grove that I completely believed. What I remember is not any single day but the feeling that time was not counted. Nobody asked what I would become. I have not felt that since. My grandfather is dead now, the pond has been filled in and there is a building where the jackfruit tree stood. That is how it should be, I suppose. But a person carries his childhood the way he carries his handwriting — it is formed early, and it never entirely changes.

Childhood is the golden period of human life.
Childhood is the part of a life a person remembers least accurately and most fondly.
'Golden period' opens thousands of scripts; an observation of your own opens almost none.
I was very happy in my childhood and I enjoyed a lot.
We swam in the pond until our eyes turned red.
Show the happiness through one remembered detail rather than announcing it.
Writing about childhood in the present tense.
Keeping the whole essay in the past, since it has finished.
Tense consistency is marked, and a memory essay that slips into the present reads as unplanned.
Listing ten games in one sentence with no detail.
Naming three and describing one.
A list shows vocabulary; one described scene shows writing.
- Can I invent the memories?
- Yes. Examiners mark English, not biography. Invent something ordinary and specific — an invented dramatic rescue reads as invented; a jackfruit tree does not.
- Which tense should I use?
- Past throughout, with the present only in the final paragraph if you are describing how things are now.
- How do I end it well?
- With what changed and what did not. A closing image — a filled-in pond, a building where a tree stood — is better than a summary sentence.
