The years spent in school and college work the same way: they decide not what a person will earn, but what kind of person will be doing the earning. Why this period and no other: A student has something that will never be available again in the same quantity — time without obligation. There is no salary to protect, no family depending on the day's work, and a mind that takes an impression the way wet clay does. Twenty years later the same person may want to learn a language and find that both the hours and the ease have gone. The first duty: The first duty is plainly to study, and no student who neglects it can be called successful. But study means understanding rather than storing. A boy who memorises an answer he cannot explain has bought a mark and learned nothing, and the day the question is worded differently he has neither. What study alone does not give: Games teach a body to be strong and a temper to lose without sulking. Debate teaches a person to stand up, be disagreed with, and answer anyway.
