Duties of a Student Composition

A student's duties are usually listed as though they were a set of rules pinned to a wall. They are better understood as answers to one question: what is this period for? The first duty is to study, and to study properly rather than merely for hours. That means understanding before memorising, solving problems rather than reading solutions, and admitting the topics one does not know instead of avoiding them until the examination. A student who reads a guidebook because it is shorter than the text is not saving time; he is postponing the cost. The second duty is to the body. Sleep, exercise and regular meals are not competitors of study; they are the conditions under which study works at all. A student who reads all night and sleeps two hours has usually stored nothing. The third is to character, and it is the one nobody examines. Honesty in a test when the invigilator has left the room, keeping a promise, admitting a mistake, refusing to join in the humiliation of a weaker classmate — nothing on a certificate records any of this, and everything in a life depends on it. The fourth is to other people. A student who teaches a neighbourhood child to read, joins a flood-relief collection or gives blood is not taking time away from his studies; he is learning something the syllabus cannot deliver. And there are things a student must refuse — bad company, addiction, aimless hours on a phone, and politics that uses students for other people's purposes. None of these duties is dramatic. Taken together over ten years they decide almost everything that follows, which is why this period, and not any later one, is where a life is actually built.

ছাত্রের কর্তব্য সাধারণত এমনভাবে তালিকা করা হয় যেন সেগুলো দেয়ালে টাঙানো কিছু নিয়ম। বরং সেগুলোকে একটি প্রশ্নের উত্তর হিসেবে দেখা ভালো: এই সময়টা কীসের জন্য? প্রথম কর্তব্য পড়া — কেবল ঘণ্টা গুনে নয়, ঠিকভাবে পড়া। মানে মুখস্থের আগে বোঝা, সমাধান পড়ার বদলে নিজে সমাধান করা, আর যে বিষয়গুলো বোঝা যায়নি সেগুলো পরীক্ষার আগ পর্যন্ত এড়িয়ে না গিয়ে স্বীকার করে নেওয়া। দ্বিতীয় কর্তব্য শরীরের প্রতি: ঘুম, ব্যায়াম ও নিয়মিত খাওয়া পড়ার প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী নয় — এগুলোই সেই শর্ত, যার ভেতরে পড়া কাজ করে। তৃতীয় কর্তব্য চরিত্রের প্রতি, আর এটারই কোনো পরীক্ষা নেই: শিক্ষক ঘর ছেড়ে গেলেও নকল না করা, কথা রাখা, ভুল স্বীকার করা, দুর্বল সহপাঠীকে হেয় করায় যোগ না দেওয়া।

এই বিষয়ে প্রায় প্রতিটি খাতায় একই তালিকা: পড়ো, শিক্ষককে মানো, সময় নষ্ট কোরো না। **আলাদা হওয়ার উপায় হলো তালিকাটাকে একটা প্রশ্নের উত্তর বানানো**: এই সময়টা কীসের জন্য? তারপর কর্তব্যগুলোকে চারটি দিকে ভাগ করুন — **পড়া, শরীর, চরিত্র, অন্য মানুষ** — আর প্রতিটিতে একটা নির্দিষ্ট কথা রাখুন। দ্বিতীয় দিকটা (শরীর) প্রায় কেউ লেখে না, অথচ 'সারারাত পড়ে দুই ঘণ্টা ঘুমালে কিছুই জমা হয় না' — এই কথাটা পরীক্ষার্থীর কাজে লাগে। তৃতীয় দিকটাই সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী: চরিত্রের কোনো পরীক্ষা হয় না, অথচ জীবনের সবকিছু তার উপর নির্ভর করে। শেষে যা **বর্জনীয়** তার তালিকা রাখুন, তারপর একটা উপসংহার — এই দশ বছরই বাকি জীবন ঠিক করে দেয়।
