Model Composition (320 words)
Introduction: Patriotism is the easiest thing in the world to say and one of the harder ones to do. On the fourteenth of December we are all patriots. The question this composition should answer is what patriotism asks of us on the fifteenth. What it is: It is love of one's country expressed as work rather than as noise. It is not the same as hating other countries; a man who loves his mother is not required to insult everyone else's. Nor is it uncritical praise. A citizen who says nothing is wrong here loves an imaginary country, and imaginary countries do not improve. Where it showed: In 1952 students walked into gunfire so that a language could be spoken in its own land. In 1971 farmers and college boys with no military training fought a professional army for nine months. Neither group was making a speech about patriotism. They were doing something, and the doing is what the word means. What it asks of us now: Nobody is asking this generation to die. The list is smaller and duller. Pay the tax that is owed. Do the job properly on a day nobody is checking. Do not adulterate what you sell. Keep the road you live on clean and the queue you stand in honest. Buy what our own farmers and weavers make when it is as good. Teach a child in the village who cannot afford a tutor. What it is not: It is not the flag as decoration, a song learnt without meaning, or a nationalism that treats criticism as betrayal. A person who takes a bribe on Sunday and speaks about the martyrs on Monday has not understood the word. Conclusion: The country was won by people who did the difficult thing when it was not being watched. That is still the whole test, and it is available to every one of us in ordinary hours.

Patriotism is easy to say and hard to do. On the fourteenth of December we are all patriots; the question is what patriotism asks of us on the fifteenth. It is love of one's country expressed as work rather than noise. It is not hatred of other countries, and it is not uncritical praise — a citizen who says nothing is wrong loves an imaginary country. In 1952 students walked into gunfire for a language. In 1971 farmers and college boys fought a professional army for nine months. Neither group was making a speech; they were doing something. Nobody asks this generation to die. Pay the tax owed. Do the job properly when nobody is checking. Do not adulterate what you sell. Keep the queue honest. The country was won by people who did the difficult thing unwatched. That is still the test.

A patriot believes his country is the greatest and all others are inferior.
Patriotism is not hatred of other countries; a man who loves his mother need not insult everyone else's.
Confusing patriotism with contempt for others is the error the topic is designed to test, and falling into it costs the central argument.
A true patriot never criticises his country.
A citizen who says nothing is wrong here loves an imaginary country.
Treating criticism as betrayal removes any way for the composition to say what should improve, and examiners mark the reasoning.
Writing only about 1971 and stopping there.
Adding what patriotism asks of an ordinary citizen today.
The history is the easy half; the present-day list is where the thinking shows and where most scripts run out.
I love my country very much. My country is very beautiful. I am proud of my country.
Do the job properly on a day nobody is checking.
Repeated declarations of feeling fill lines without content, while one concrete duty demonstrates what the word means.
- What is the difference between patriotism and nationalism here?
- Patriotism is love of your country shown through work and duty. The kind of nationalism that treats criticism as betrayal or other countries as enemies is a different thing, and saying so plainly strengthens the composition.
- Should I write about 1952 and 1971?
- Yes, briefly. They are the clearest examples this country has. But keep them to one paragraph and spend more space on what patriotism asks of a student now.
- Can I use this for 'A True Patriot' or 'Love for the Country'?
- Yes. For 'A True Patriot', frame the same material around a person — what such a person does and does not do — and keep the closing test about acting unwatched.
