Model Composition (398 words)
Introduction: Pollution is not a disaster that arrives one morning. It is the slow result of many ordinary decisions — a kiln cheaper without a filter, a factory pipe that reaches the river, a horn pressed because the car ahead is slow — and none of them feels like a crime. That is why it has grown to its present size. Air: The air over our cities is spoiled chiefly by brick kilns, vehicles that should have left the road years ago, and uncovered construction dust. In the dry months Dhaka regularly appears among the worst cities in the world for air quality. The result is not abstract: children develop coughs that do not clear, and older people find a short walk difficult. Water: Almost every river near a city now carries what a city has finished with. Dyeing and tanning factories release untreated effluent, sewage runs in raw, and farm chemicals wash off with the first heavy rain. Water drunk within living memory now kills the fish in it, and arsenic in some tube wells has poisoned people for thirty years. Soil: Land is spoiled from two directions. Above, plastic that will not rot is buried and stays. Below, years of chemical fertiliser exhaust what the soil could once do for itself, so the farmer buys more of what caused the problem. Sound: This is the kind we treat as a joke and it is not one. Needless horns, loudspeakers at every occasion, and machinery running through the night damage hearing permanently and make study impossible near a main road. What it is costing us: Breathing complaints, skin disease and heart conditions rise year on year, and the poorest carry most of it, living nearest the kilns and drains. Crops yield less and fish stocks fall. And the climate itself turns against a country that contributed very little to the problem. What can be done: Kilns can be modernised and unfit vehicles removed. Effluent treatment can be required and, more to the point, inspected. Waste can be sorted and recycled instead of buried. Horns can be restricted and the restriction enforced. Trees can line every road with room for them. Conclusion: We lack neither knowledge nor laws; we lack enforcement, and that begins with the individual who declines to add to the damage. A country cannot be clean while each citizen waits for the others to start.

Pollution is not a disaster that arrives one morning. It is the slow result of many ordinary decisions, none of which feels like a crime. Air is spoiled by brick kilns, unfit vehicles and uncovered construction dust, and in the dry months Dhaka is among the worst cities in the world for air quality. Water carries untreated factory effluent, city sewage and farm chemicals, and some tube wells carry arsenic. Soil is exhausted by years of chemical fertiliser and buried plastic that never rots. Sound pollution from horns, loudspeakers and night-time machinery damages hearing and ruins concentration. The cost is illness, smaller harvests, fewer fish, and a changing climate that punishes a country which did little to cause it. The remedies are known: modern kilns, treated effluent, recycling, restricted horns and more trees. What is missing is enforcement, and that begins with each of us.

Pollution is bad. It harms our environment. We should stop pollution.
In the dry months Dhaka regularly appears among the worst cities in the world for air quality, and children develop coughs that do not clear.
The first version could be written by someone who knows nothing about the topic, while a named place and a named consequence prove that the writer does.
There are two kinds of pollution: air and water.
There are four: air, water, soil and sound.
Board questions on this topic expect all four, and leaving out soil and sound loses content marks that were sitting there for the taking.
Bangladesh is responsible for climate change.
Bangladesh contributes very little to the problem and receives an unfair share of its consequences.
Getting this backwards inverts one of the strongest points available in the composition and shows a misunderstanding an examiner will mark down.
We should be aware of pollution and keep our environment clean.
Effluent treatment can be required and, more to the point, inspected; unfit vehicles can be taken off the road.
'Being aware' is not a remedy, and vague conclusions are where most scripts lose the marks reserved for the solutions section.
- How many kinds of pollution should I write about?
- Four: air, water, soil and sound. Give each its own short paragraph with a cause and an example. Most scripts cover only air and water and lose marks for the other two.
- How is this different from the paragraph on environment pollution?
- The paragraph is one block of about 150 to 200 words for ten marks. The composition is worth twenty, is marked on organisation, and has room for a separate section on effects and another on remedies.
- Can I use this for 'Environmental Pollution' or 'Pollution in Bangladesh'?
- Yes. Those titles ask for the same material. For 'Pollution in Bangladesh', keep every example local and name places where you can.
