Model Composition (314 words)
Introduction: Discipline has a bad name because it is usually explained by people who are enforcing it. Described that way it sounds like obedience. It is closer to the opposite: the ability to do what you decided to do at a moment when you no longer feel like doing it. Where it shows: In nature first — the sun does not rise when it feels ready, and a season does not arrive late. In a body, where a heart that skipped its beat as it pleased would kill the person carrying it. In an army, where a hundred trained men beat a thousand brave ones. And in a school, where thirty children and one teacher can only work if a few agreements hold. In a student's life: This is where it decides everything. Two students of the same ability sit the same examination; one has read forty minutes a day since January and the other intends to start on Friday. The difference at the end is not talent. Discipline is what turns an intention into an hour, and hours into a result. What it is not: It is not fear, and it is not silence. A class that is quiet because it is frightened has order without discipline, and the moment the teacher leaves, both go. Real discipline is chosen, and it survives being unwatched — which is the only useful test of it. In national life: A country where traffic rules are obeyed only when a sergeant is visible, where offices open when the officer arrives, where a queue means whoever pushes hardest, is not short of intelligence. It is short of this one habit, and it pays for the shortage every day. Conclusion: Discipline is not the enemy of freedom; it is the price of it. Nobody is free who cannot make himself do the thing he has already decided to do.

Discipline sounds like obedience because it is usually explained by people enforcing it. It is closer to the opposite: doing what you decided to do at the moment you no longer feel like it. It shows in nature, where the sun does not rise when it feels ready; in the body, where a heart beating as it pleased would kill its owner; in an army, where a hundred trained men beat a thousand brave ones; and in a school of thirty children and one teacher. In student life it decides everything. Two students of equal ability sit the same examination; one has read forty minutes a day since January, the other means to start on Friday. It is not fear. A class quiet because it is frightened loses both order and discipline the moment the teacher leaves. Discipline is not the enemy of freedom. It is the price of it.

Discipline means obeying our parents and teachers always.
Discipline is doing what you decided to do when you no longer feel like doing it.
Defining it as obedience makes the whole composition a lecture, and it is also the definition every other script uses.
A silent classroom always shows good discipline.
A class quiet because it is frightened has order without discipline, and both end when the teacher leaves.
The distinction is the most interesting point in the topic, and missing it leaves the answer indistinguishable from the rest.
Discipline is the enemy of freedom.
Discipline is the price of freedom.
The reversed claim contradicts the argument the composition needs to reach and is hard to recover from in a conclusion.
Listing places where discipline is needed without explaining any of them.
Explaining one — a hundred trained men beating a thousand brave ones — rather than naming six.
One developed example is worth more than a list, because the marks are for the reasoning rather than the coverage.
- How do I make this composition different from everyone else's?
- Define discipline as self-command rather than obedience in the opening, and add a paragraph on what discipline is not. Those two moves change the whole piece and take four sentences.
- Can I use this for 'Discipline in Student Life'?
- Yes. Expand the student section into two paragraphs — study habits and conduct — and shorten the national one to a few lines.
- How long should the composition be?
- About 350 to 400 words for SSC and HSC. Classes six to eight are expected to write roughly 150, which is what the short model gives.
