Deforestation Composition

Model Composition (344 words)
Introduction: A forest takes a century to build and an afternoon to remove. That asymmetry is the whole difficulty: the profit from cutting arrives at once and belongs to somebody, while the loss arrives slowly and belongs to everybody. Why the trees come down: Land is the first reason. A growing population needs houses, roads, factories and fields, and forest is the cheapest land to take because nobody defends it. Fuel is the second: a great many households still cook on firewood. Timber is the third, and the illegal trade in it is profitable enough to buy protection. Brick kilns burn wood in quantity. And in the hill districts and the Sundarbans, encroachment simply advances year by year while the boundary on the map stays where it was. What is lost with them: Rainfall becomes erratic, because forests take part in making their own weather. Soil that roots once held slides into the rivers, which then hold less water and flood sooner. Animals whose habitat has been cut come into villages and are killed for it. The Sundarbans, which has absorbed the force of every cyclone reaching that coast, is thinner than it was — and a country this low and this crowded cannot afford a weaker shield. Above all, carbon that standing trees would have held stays in the air. What can be done: Protect what still stands before planting anything new, because an existing forest is worth more than any plantation that replaces it. Give the people living at the forest edge a living that does not require cutting, since a family with no alternative will take wood whatever the law says. Provide cheaper cooking fuel. Prosecute the organised timber trade rather than the villager with a headload. And make replanting a condition of every road and factory that takes forest land. Conclusion: We speak of losing forests as though they had been mislaid. They are being taken, deliberately, by people who can be named — and that is encouraging, because what has been done by decision can be stopped by decision.

A forest takes a century to build and an afternoon to remove. The profit from cutting arrives at once and belongs to somebody; the loss arrives slowly and belongs to everybody. Trees come down for land, for firewood, for timber and for brick kilns, and in the hill districts and the Sundarbans encroachment advances while the boundary on the map stays put. With them we lose reliable rainfall, soil that slides into the rivers, and animals that come into villages and are killed. The Sundarbans, which absorbs the force of every cyclone reaching that coast, is thinner than it was. Protect what stands before planting anything new. Give forest-edge families a living that does not need cutting, provide cheaper fuel, and prosecute the organised timber trade rather than the villager with a headload.

Deforestation means planting fewer trees.
Deforestation means clearing forests that already exist.
The two are different problems with different remedies, and confusing them turns the whole composition into a tree-plantation essay by mistake.
We can cut old forests freely as long as we plant new saplings.
An existing forest is worth more than the plantation that replaces it, so protection comes before planting.
A mature forest holds soil, water and species that young saplings cannot, and the substitution argument is a common and marked-down error.
Poor villagers are responsible for deforestation.
The organised timber trade and land encroachment take far more than the villager with a headload of firewood.
Aiming the blame at the least powerful makes every proposed remedy target the wrong people.
Bangladesh has no forest left at all.
Forest remains in the hill districts and the Sundarbans, and it is shrinking year by year.
An overstatement that the examiner knows to be false undermines the accurate points standing next to it.
সাধারণ প্রশ্ন
- What is the difference between this and a composition on tree plantation?
- Deforestation is about what is being lost and why; tree plantation is about what should be planted and how. They share some remedies but answer different questions, so do not submit one for the other.
- Which local example should I use?
- The Sundarbans. It is the most specific and most valuable case for Bangladesh, because it takes the force of cyclones reaching that coast, and every examiner recognises its importance.
- How long should the composition be?
- About 350 to 400 words for SSC and HSC, in five short sections. Classes six to eight are expected to write roughly 150.
