Model Composition (381 words)
Introduction: There is a particular sound in a Dhaka morning that most of us have stopped hearing: a boy of nine calling out fares on a bus, or hammering at a workshop before the shutters of the school across the road have been raised. Child labour is not rare enough to shock us, and that is the first thing wrong with it. What it is: Not every task a child does is child labour. Helping at home or in a family field after school teaches responsibility. Child labour is work that takes the place of schooling, exceeds what a growing body can bear, or exposes a child to danger — and by that definition a great many children in this country are working. Why it happens: Poverty is the first and largest reason. A family that cannot eat on one income will send a second earner, and the youngest is the cheapest to spare. The second is the pull from the other side: employers want hands that are paid least and complain never. The third is that schooling is not free in practice — uniforms, private tuition and materials cost money a landless family does not have. The fourth is a father's death or illness, which turns a schoolboy into an earner within a week. What it costs: The child loses the only years in which learning comes easily, and with them every job that requires a certificate. Bodies are damaged early by lifting, fumes and machinery built for adults. And the loss repeats: an unschooled child becomes a poorly paid parent whose own children are sent out to work. What should be done: Enforce the law where the work is visible — workshops, transport, hotels. Make schooling genuinely free, including the costs around it, and keep the stipends that make a poor family better off keeping a child in class. Support the household rather than only punishing the employer, because a family with no other income will find another workshop by the following week. Conclusion: A country that needs its children's hands is spending its own future to pay this month's bills. The work will not end by pity or by slogans; it ends when a poor family is better off sending a child to school than to a workshop.

A boy of nine calling fares on a bus is not rare enough to shock us, and that is the first thing wrong with it. Not every task a child does is child labour. Helping at home after school teaches responsibility. Child labour is work that replaces schooling, exceeds what a growing body can bear, or puts a child in danger. Poverty is the largest cause. A family that cannot eat on one income sends a second earner. Employers want hands that are paid least and complain never. Schooling is not free in practice, and a father's illness can turn a schoolboy into an earner in a week. The child loses the years when learning is easy, and the damage repeats in the next generation. It ends when a poor family is better off sending a child to school than to a workshop.

Every child who works at home is a child labourer.
Helping at home after school is not child labour; work that replaces schooling or endangers a child is.
Without the distinction the composition condemns ordinary family life, and the examiner cannot tell whether the writer understands the term.
Child labour happens only because parents are cruel.
It happens mainly because a family cannot live on one income.
Blaming parents replaces the real economic cause and makes the remedies section propose punishment where support is needed.
We should arrest all the employers and the problem will end.
Enforce the law and support the household, because a family with no other income will find another workshop within a week.
A remedy that ignores why the child was sent out will not work, and saying so is exactly the reasoning the twenty marks are for.
There is no child labour in Bangladesh now.
It remains common in workshops, transport and hotels.
A claim the examiner can disprove on the way home discredits everything else in the script.
- What counts as child labour?
- Work that takes the place of schooling, goes beyond what a growing body can bear, or exposes a child to danger. Helping a family at home or in its own field outside school hours does not count.
- How many causes should I give?
- Three or four, each explained in a sentence or two. Poverty, cheap-labour demand, the real cost of schooling, and the loss of an earning parent cover the ground the examiner expects.
- Can I use this for 'Street Children' or 'Children of Bangladesh'?
- Partly. Keep the causes and the cycle of poverty, but a composition on street children needs more on shelter, health and safety, and less on employment law.
