Robert Bruce was the king of Scotland. He fought against the English to free his country, but he was defeated again and again. After his sixth defeat he lost all hope. He fled from the battlefield and took shelter in a lonely cave. There he lay on the ground, tired and hopeless. Suddenly his eyes fell on a spider…

The little creature was trying to reach the ceiling of the cave by climbing up its thin thread. Bruce watched it idly at first. The spider went up a short way, lost its hold and fell to the ground. It began again, climbed a little higher, and fell once more. Bruce counted. The spider failed once, twice, three times, and still it did not stop. Six times it tried and six times it fell — exactly as many times as the king himself had been defeated. He sat up and watched with all his attention now. The spider began for the seventh time. Slowly it climbed, past the point where it had fallen before, and at last it reached the ceiling and fastened its thread there. Bruce was deeply moved. "If a tiny spider can try seven times," he said to himself, "why should a king give up after six?" His courage came back to him. He left the cave, gathered his soldiers once more and attacked the enemy with fresh hope. This time he won, and Scotland was free.
