He put his beak into the pitcher and tried to reach the water, but his beak was too short. He tried again from another side, and still he could not reach it. The pitcher was too deep and the water too low. The poor bird was almost in despair. Then he looked around and saw some small pebbles lying near the garden path. All at once an idea struck him. He picked up a pebble in his beak, flew back to the pitcher and dropped it in. He heard it fall into the water with a soft sound. He went back for another, and another, and dropped them in one by one. It was slow work and the sun was hot, but the crow did not give up. As the pebbles gathered at the bottom, the water began to rise little by little. The crow watched it carefully. After a long while the water came up near the mouth of the pitcher. Now the crow could reach it easily. He drank to his heart's content, thanked his own patience, and flew away happily to a shady branch.

তৃষ্ণার্ত কাক কলসির ভেতরে ঠোঁট ঢুকিয়েও পানি নাগাল পায় না — কলসি গভীর, পানি অল্প। হঠাৎ সে কাছেই কিছু নুড়িপাথর দেখে এবং একটি বুদ্ধি খেলে যায়। সে একটি একটি করে নুড়ি এনে কলসিতে ফেলতে থাকে। রোদ প্রখর, কাজটি ধীর, তবু সে হাল ছাড়ে না। নুড়ি জমতে জমতে পানি ধীরে ধীরে উপরে উঠে আসে। শেষে কাক পেট ভরে পানি খেয়ে খুশি মনে উড়ে যায়।

এই গল্পে ঘটনা কম, তাই বর্ণনা দিয়ে শব্দসংখ্যা পূরণ করতে হয় — গরম, তৃষ্ণা, ব্যর্থ চেষ্টা, তারপর বুদ্ধি। শুধু "he dropped pebbles and drank water" লিখলে ৪০ শব্দেই শেষ হয়ে যাবে। চেষ্টা যে সহজ ছিল না সেটা লিখুন ("It was slow work and the sun was hot")। এই এক লাইনেই moral-টি অর্জিত হয় — নাহলে মনে হয় কাক ভাগ্যক্রমে সফল হয়েছে। "little by little", "one by one", "after a long while" — এই শব্দগুলো ধৈর্যের অনুভূতি তৈরি করে। পরীক্ষায় এগুলো মনে রাখলে গল্পটি নিজে থেকেই লম্বা হয়।
