Presently a fairy rose out of the river and asked him why he was weeping. The woodcutter told her that he had lost his only axe and that his family would starve without it. The fairy dived into the water and came up with an axe of pure gold. "Is this your axe?" she asked. The woodcutter looked at it and shook his head. "No, madam. Mine was not so fine." The fairy dived again and brought up an axe of silver. Again the woodcutter said it was not his. A third time she dived, and this time she brought up an old axe with an iron head and a worn wooden handle. The woodcutter's face brightened at once. "Yes, that is mine!" he cried. "That is the axe I lost." The fairy was pleased with his honesty. She gave him back his own axe and the golden and the silver ones as well, saying, "You could have claimed the gold and I would not have known. Take all three. Honesty deserves a reward." The woodcutter went home a rich man. His neighbour heard the story and threw his own axe into the river on purpose. When the fairy showed him the golden axe, he claimed it greedily. The fairy vanished with all the axes, and the greedy man lost even the one he had.

একজন গরিব কাঠুরের কুড়াল নদীতে পড়ে গেলে সে কাঁদতে বসে। এক পরী উঠে এসে প্রথমে সোনার, তারপর রুপার কুড়াল দেখায় — কাঠুরে দুবারই বলে, "এটা আমার নয়।" তৃতীয়বার নিজের পুরোনো লোহার কুড়াল দেখে সে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে চিনে নেয়। পরী তার সততায় খুশি হয়ে তিনটি কুড়ালই তাকে দিয়ে দেন। তার প্রতিবেশী লোভে পড়ে ইচ্ছে করে নিজের কুড়াল নদীতে ফেলে এবং সোনার কুড়ালটি নিজের বলে দাবি করে। পরী সব কুড়াল নিয়ে অদৃশ্য হয়ে যান — লোভী লোকটি নিজের কুড়ালটিও হারায়।
কীভাবে লিখবেন — structure
প্রশ্নে যে অংশটুকু দেওয়া থাকে, সেটি আবার লিখতে হবে না — সরাসরি তার পরের ঘটনা থেকে শুরু করুন। "Presently", "After a while", "Just then" — এমন একটি শব্দ দিয়ে শুরু করলে গল্পটি দেওয়া অংশের সঙ্গে জোড়া লেগে যায়। গল্প সবসময় past tense-এ লিখুন। কথোপকথন এক-দুই লাইন রাখলে গল্প জীবন্ত হয়, কিন্তু পুরো গল্প সংলাপে লিখবেন না। শেষে অবশ্যই moral লিখুন — আলাদা লাইনে, "Moral:" লিখে। বোর্ডে এর জন্য আলাদা নম্বর আছে, আর অনেক শিক্ষার্থী শুধু এটাই লিখতে ভুলে যায়। লেখার আগে ৩০ সেকেন্ড খরচ করে মনে মনে ঘটনাগুলো সাজিয়ে নিন — কী ঘটল, তারপর কী, শেষে কী শিক্ষা। সাজানো না থাকলে মাঝপথে গল্প এলোমেলো হয়ে যায়।
